VOLLEYBALL

Entering his fourth season as the

head coach of the Cal Poly women’s volley-ball program, Sam Crosson has directed 21 victories over the past two years, includ-ing 10 during Big West Conference play. Highlighting the 2014 campaign, Crosson led the Mustangs to nine wins – six inside the Mott Athletics Center – with a young, talented roster that included seven freshman from a recruiting class that was ranked 23rd na-tionally by PrepVolley-ball.com entering the season. Cal Poly finishedthirdamongall conference teams in 2014 with 915 digs andfifthoverallwith761 kills. Prior to accepting Cal Poly’s head coaching position on Jan. 20,2012, Crosson was an assistant coach for two years

years at California where he was charged with video and statisti-cal analysis, designing offensive and defensive systems and serving as the point person for the development of the program’s setters and middle blockers. In2010, Crosson assist-ed the Golden Bears to a program-record 30 victories, a Pac-10 Conference title and a national runner-up NCAA Tournament showing. A year later, Crosson helped direct Cal to a 26-7 record and anoth-er NCAA Tournament appearance. As the top assistant at Saint Mary’s (2005-09), Crosson was the progr-

am’s recruiting coor-dinator, in addition to planning and execut-ing training sessions and coordinating the offense. With Crosson, Saint Mary’s achieved a 20-8 mark and quali-fiedfortheNCAATournament in 2008 beforefinishing23-5,capturing the program’s firstWestCoastCon-ference title and reach-ing the NCAA Tourna-ment second round inhisfinalseasonof2009. Crosson served forfiveseasonsasthe top men’s assistant coach at his alma mater,Pacific.WiththeTigers, Crosson was responsible for recruit-recruiting, player devel-opment and academic

support. One of the top attackers in program history during his play-ingcareeratPacific(1994-97), Crosson still ranks third all-time in aces(86),fifthindigs(689) and seventh in kills (948). Crosson graduatedfromPacificin 1997 with a bache-lor’s degree in sports sciences. He then earned his master’s in sports sciences from Pacificin2005.Asaprofessional, Crosson played one season for Herentals Volleyball Club in Belgium. A native of Santa Cruz, Crosson and his wife, Courtney Miller, have two daughters, Makenna and Logan.

Walters Assistant Coach Seventh Season • Santa Clara, 2008

one of the top de-fensive players in

West CoastConference history, Caroline Walters is in her seventh season as an assistant coach withthe Cal Poly volleyball program. Walters’ pri-mary on-court respon-sibilities with the Mus-tangs include working with Cal Poly’s serve receivers and down

defenders. Walters also served as Cal Poly’s interim head coach for amajority of the 2011 season. A four-year letterwinner andthree-time All-West Coast Conference hon-orable mention se-lection at Santa Clara(2003-07) Walters re-mains second in league history with 1,932 ca-reer digs and ranksfirstinBroncoprogramhistory with a 4.59 with a 4.59 career dig-per-set average.A four-time Defensive

Most Valuable Player recipient, Walters owns fourofthetopfivesin-gle season per-set dig marks in Santa Clara history. Walters en-joyed her top collegiate campaign as a sopho-more in 2005 as her conference-leading 516 digs – the third highest single season total in Santa Clara history –helped propel the Bron-cos to aprogram-record 27 victories, a West Coast championship, aberth into the NCAA Tournament national semifinalsandafinal

No. 4 ranking in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. With Walters in the lineup, Santa Clara posted an 84-34 overall record, a 41-15 com-bined West Coast mark andfailedtofinishlower than third in the conference standings during her four sea-sons. Walters appeared in 421 of a possible 428 sets during her career. A native of Los Gatos, Calif., Walters earned an accounting degree from Santa Clara.

Enteringhisfirstseason as an

assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Cal Poly vol-leyball program, Jason Borchin has spent the

last six seasons with the Sacramento State Hornets volleyball pro-gram as an assistant coach. Borchin began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with Sacramento State in 2007 and became a full-time assistant coach in 2010. During hisfirstfullseason,he

helped guide the Hor-nets to a 15-win sea-son, including a 10-3 mark at home. In addition to his in-door coaching success, Borchin has also been the co-head coach of the Sacramento State Sand Volleyball pro-gram for the past three seasons. Prior to his coaching

career with Sacra-mento State, Borchin played for the Hornets for two seasons and transferredtoPacificwhere he played in 86 career matches from 2008-10. A native of Roseville, Calif., Borchin graduat-edfromPacificin2010with a degree in sports sciences.
