Tim Place enters his eighth season at the helm of the Chowan football program. Place and the Hawks enter the season looking to build on a 2-8 overall finish,1-6 record against CIAA opponents and fifth place finish in CIAA Northern Division play. In 2014, Kemaree Alcorn and Marcel Burns Jr. both earned CIAA All-Rookie Defensive Team accolades on behalf of the program. Alcorn also earned NCCAA All-American Second Team recognition.

In 2013, Place guided the team to a 4-6 overall record and 3-4 finish in CIAA competition. The Hawks ended the year in fourth place in the CIAA Northern Division. Chowan had several players earn CIAA accolades. Robert Holland was named CIAA Offensive Player of the Year, Jason Ampy, Aeon Blake and Dakorion DeSamme all earned CIAA Second Team honors with Andrew Denny and Kevin Tarr grabbing All-Rookie recognition. Place guided the 2012 squad to their first winning season since 1999 when the then-Braves posted a 5-4 mark. The 2012 season was the most successful in terms of wins and conference finish since the school began its transition to a four-year school in 1992. Their 6-4 overall record and 5-2 record in league play was good for a 2nd place finish in the CIAA Northern Division, their best finish since joining the league in 2008.

Place, who stepped down as the head coach at Urbana University (OH) to accept the position at Chowan has a vast and diverse football coaching background. Most recently he served as the head coach at Urbana where he tallied an 11-11 record over two seasons.

At Urbana, he breathed new life into the program after taking over as interim Head Coach in the summer of 2006. In 2007, Place led the team to only its second winning season in program history after finishing up at 6-5. For six consecutive weeks, the 2007 squad was ranked in the NAIA’s Top 25.Over his two year tenure as head coach at Urbana, Place saw 23 student-athletes named all conference, two student-athletes garner NAIA All-America Honors, and two student-athletes be named to the NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athlete team.

Place spent a total of six seasons with the Blue Knights, advancing from Defensive Coordinator, Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, to Head Coach. As the Defensive Coordinator in 2004, Place was named the Mid-States Football Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year after coaching one of the league’s premier defenses. As the assistant head coach at Urbana, Place also served as the football program’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor. He was integral in bringing several of the best football classes into Urbana while also holding them to high academic standards. While he was the team’s academic advisor, they raised their overall team GPA by one point.

Along with his six-year stint at Urbana, Place has college coaching experience at Western Carolina University, Eureka Col-lege (IL), and Hartwick College (NY). At WCU, he served as a linebackers and defensive line coach while also heading up the academic support services for over 300 student-athletes within the WCU athletic department. At Eureka, he coached both

wide receivers and tight ends, including the NCAA DIII’s All-Time Leading Receiver, Kurt Barth. Place also has high school head coaching experience at Greene Central High School in New York and at Ravenna High School in Ohio. Place graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology. At W&L he was a four-year member of the football team and two-year letter winner. The Chowan University football team, under the direction of Head Coach Tim Place, looks to make a statement in the 2015 season. After a 2-8 overall finish one year ago, the Hawks hit the gridiron this season with a fresh outlook, key group of returners and host of newcomers eager to make their mark in the CIAA. Following a 1-6 record in CIAA play in 2014 and fifth place finish in the Northern Division standings, Place noted, “The 2014 season with a 2-8 record was unacceptable. With that said, we’re not paid to make excuses; rather, we’re paid to find answers…We must be physical, tough, relentless and competitive. We all must understand that and buy into it.” With a challenging 2015 schedule both in non-conference and league play, as well as seven road contests, the Hawks will be tested week in and week out over the course of the ten game season.

Place added, “There are a lot of lessons that can be learned from the 2014 season. Games are won in January, February, March and April and during summer strength and conditioning sessions as that’s when one conditions oneself to have the psychological endurance to sustain the season. It will be a tough grind because there are a lot of very good, competitive teams on the 2015 schedule. We can’t give in to the difficulties of the season. We have to have the mental toughness to hang in there and hang together.”

Chowan kicks-off the season with a non-conference road match-up against Fayetteville State University on September 5th and looks to build on the momentum of a 26-22 win against the Broncos from the 2014 season. The Hawks will remain on the road for the next two weeks, taking on NCAA Division I opponents Campbell University and Delaware State University on September 12th and September 19th, respectively. On September 26th, Chowan returns to the friendly confines of Garrison Stadium to take on Saint Augustine’s University in CIAA crossover play. The contest will also serve as the annual Hall of Fame Game for Chowan. The Falcons clipped the Hawks 33-31 in 2014, handing Chowan the first of six straight league losses.

The next three road games for the Chowan Blue and White feature one crossover game against Winston-Salem State University (October 3rd) and two CIAA Northern Division match-ups. The Bowie State University Bulldogs will entertain the Hawks on October 10th while the Panthers of Virginia Union University host the Hawks on October 17th at Hovey Field.

Chowan continues CIAA Northern Division action in Garrison Stadium as the Hawks host crosstown rival Elizabeth City State University on October 24th and the defending CIAA Champions, Virginia State University on October 31st. The clash against the Virginia State Trojans will be the annual Homecoming Game for the Chowan Blue and White.

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK

Page 17: 2015 Chowan Football Preseason Guide

The Hawks round out their schedule on November 7th in a CIAA Northern Division road contest against The Lincoln University. Chowan topped the Lions 50-20 in the Hawks’ season finale last season, ending the 2014 season on a positive note.

This year’s squad features seven starters returning on the offensive side of the ball and eight on the defensive side. Offensively, Ryan Nolan will be counted on to lead the charge. The Brick, New Jersey native enters his final season with the Hawks after emerging as the top returner in all major offensive categories. Nolan rushed for 380 yards in 2014, an average of 4.3 per carry and 42.2 yards per game with four touchdowns. He also tallied 27 receptions for 351 yards, an average of 13.0 yards per catch and 39.0 per game with two touchdowns. Additionally, Nolan threw for 592 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, Nolan accounted for 972 yards of total offense on the season as a junior with eight touchdowns.

Damian Ellis, a senior from Raleigh, North Carolina and additional key offensive returner for the Hawks, competed in ten games last season. He had 20 receptions on the year, totaling 214 yards, 10.7 per catch and 21.4 per game.

Defensively, the Hawks return Andrew Denny, a junior from Woodbridge, Virginia and Roderick Lindsey, a senior from Fort Meyers, Florida. The duo tallied a combined 130 tackles on the season. Denny had 67 stops on the year (51 solo, 16 assisted) with 2.5 tackles for loss (six yards) while Lindsey totaled 63 tackles (56 solo, seven assisted) with four interceptions (33 yards). CIAA All-Rookie performer, Kemaree Alcorn also returns to the gridiron after competing in nine games as a freshman with 31 total tackles (19 solo, 12 assisted), two sacks (29 yards), one forced fumble, one quar-terback hurry and a blocked kick.

Place commented, “On offense, we MUST protect the ball better, improve red-zone efficiency and do a better job of staying on schedule. Defensively, we must be a better first down as well as third down defense. We also must eliminate the big-play and improve pass defense. During the 2015 season we must play hard, fast, smart, and together and stay disciplined for all ten games and for all sixty minutes of each game.”
