Welcome Home to the 76th Annual Colusa County FairI am so excited to welcome our friends, family and visitors back to the 76th annual Colusa County Fair.I hope that you will enjoy the Fair as we have made every effort to recapture the feel of an old time and familiar Fair while updating the fairgrounds, the attractions and the events.We’ve made some positive changes to every area of the Fair this year and we are eager to share what we have done.It takes the partnership and the positive input of the entire community to continue to producing this great event year after year.I am pleased that our Colusa County Community has continued to share resources, funding and volunteer support to insure that this major Colusa County Showcase continues and grows.Again; welcome to the Colusa County Fair, it’s great that you could come. Terry BresslerI have been on the board for 13 years at the wishes of 3 different governors. What I like about the fair is how it brings people together from all over the county. I see a lot of people only once a year, and that’s at the fair. I love to help out here to pay back the people that helped me when I was a kid and those who help my own kids. The person that comes to mind when I think of someone who always helped all of the kids in the county was Mr. Ken Stegall.

The best thing that I remember happening at the fair was at the 4-H horse show when I was about 10 years old. A parent came up to my father and started to question him about if I was able to show under the rules. My father explained to them that I was in line with all of the rules. I will never forget how he stood up for me.

Susan GibbsI have served on the Fair Board since 2005 and have loved every minute of it! I have lived in Colusa County since 1971. I moved here with my family when I was 23 years old. I love small towns like Colusa because it is like a huge extended family, with its country hometown atmosphere. I’m proud to be part of such a great community. When I first moved to Colusa, I loved the large trees and beautiful homes.

I found it offered so much more each year. I think I am most proud and thankful for the way everyone in the community comes together when something happens to a family member or friend. Neighbors come forward to do whatever is needed. I think that is what small towns are all about, and I am glad to be a part of this small town. One of my proudest moments was being appointed to the Fair Board by the Governor.One of my many favorite fair memories, was with a friend’s mom. We would sit on a bench around 8:00 each night and watch all the families walk down the food mart, eating, laughing, and enjoying each other. My friend’s mom would look forward to it every year. I remember sitting there with her the night before she passed away. I was so glad I had the opportunity to be there with her, sharing those moments and memories. It seems like a small thing, but that’s what she enjoyed year after year. The fair means different things to different people. We are all different in our likes and dislikes, but our fair has something for everyone.

Tony GarofaloThis is my ninth year on the Fair Board. I love the small town way of life in Colusa County. It’s still a pretty safe place to live and raise children. And I like the “can do” attitude of our communities throughout the county. Citizens always seem to be willing to help each other out and get things done. My favorite fair memory is raising animals, and having the champion 4-H market hog one year. I look forward to watching my two daughters have fun each year. It’s a great community event and family function. Hopefully folks come out and support our county fair this year!

Victor MatamorosI have been serving on the Fair Board since March 2015. As the newest member of the board, I am eager to serve our community by learning from other board members and contributing with new ideas to improve the overall Colusa County Fair experience. I love that Colusa County is a very tightly bonded community full of hard working

people. I enjoy spending time with friends and family at the fair. I have also enjoyed seeing students and their families from my wife’s classroom. She teaches kindergarten in Williams. This year, I am looking forward to taking my son Payton to his first but not last Colusa County Fair. It will be exciting to watch him enjoy the rides, food and entertainment. I also look forward to seeing clients from my office (Brady Myers Insurance) and meeting their family and friends. We are always working hard to improve the overall fair experience. That being said, expect new and more exciting entertainment options this year.

Laurie CostaI have served on the board since 2002. Colusa County is a very small, yet a wonderfully close community. Everyone seems to know everyone and when anyone needs help, friends come out of the woodwork to help in any way they can. It is so rewarding to be a part of that. We also have very generous sponsors


of our fair. It seems like anytime we need a piece of equipment, tools, tables, benches, sponsor money, hands to help, or anything...our community comes forward and helps us! Caring and supportive people are what helps makes our fair incredibly successful!I look forward to the smell of a warm corn dog, watching families laughing and having fun together, and watching the livestock show. So much energy and effort goes into creating our fair that I enjoy all of it. The Fair Board, the Jr. Fair Board, the staff, and tons of volunteers work so hard, so it’s exciting to see it all come together for our community to enjoy. I love watching the pageants and how excited the contestants are, and advising the Jr. Fair Board as they put together the “Mr. Cinderfella Pageant.” I laughed through the entire pageant! I enjoy walking through the buildings to see all of the entries that our talented children, teens, and adults have worked so hard to create and have chosen to share with the community. I love trying a new “food on a stick” and watching our derby. Seeing a child on a fair ride smiling from ear to ear and hearing the screams of the teenagers on the thrill rides always brings back happy memories to me. I guess the fair brings out the inner child in me. I have always loved the fair and all the excitement it brought to my heart. At the end of the fair I am totally exhausted, but I love every bit of it, and look forward to the next year!

Jamie TraynhamI have served on the fair board since 2006. I love the rural setting and the wide variety of agriculture of Colusa County. I am proud of how well-rounded our children become in this county. They have the opportunity to do almost anything they want and they compete with peers from much

larger schools in everything from sports to academics. My favorite fair memories are of showing animals and riding the Tilt-a-Whirl. Every year, I look forward to seeing what the community enters in the still exhibits, what the juniors have created/raised, and enjoying at least one fair corn dog and funnel cake. You should go to the fair to see the best of what the county residents have to offer, to appreciate our agricultural history, and to see how the next generation is honoring our traditions while making new ones. You will run into old friends and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun with your family. Fair time is fun time!

Dan O’ConnellI have served on the Colusa County Fair Board since 2006. I love living in Colusa County because of its lifestyle and my involvement in Agriculture. I’m proud of the way our people come together to support and help each other. A prime example is the new community center at the fairgrounds, which was built entirely through donations and volunteer time. I’m thankful for all who made that

possible with their overwhelming generosity. My favorite fair memory was the year my children showed 4 different animals, as well as participating in the horse show. It was so hot and we could not keep enough water in the animals or the kids! I look forward to taking my grandkids to the kiddy carnival and the animal exhibits. It is so rewarding to watch how excited they get and the questions they ask. I invite everyone to the fair to experience the positive energy of the youth of Colusa County and see the amazing projects they exhibit. It’s also a great time to visit with friends and neighbors.

Bob VierraThe people and agriculture is what I love most about Colusa County. I’m proud of our fair and our agriculture heritage. Not to date myself, but my favorite fair memory is showing dairy cattle back in the late 50’s and early 60’s. I enjoy the livestock shows and look forward to them each year. I’ve

served on the board for 9 years and believe that the Colusa County Fair is great family entertainment.

Walter SeaverThis will be my third year as a member of the Colusa County Fair Board. The Seaver family has been living in this area for more than 100 years, and I would not live anywhere else. This is my home! The people who live here and the support that we give each other is what I love about living in Colusa County. I’m proud of the outstanding support that the community gives to the Junior Livestock Auction (JLA), from both local businesses and individuals. No other fair can match our per capita contributions to JLAs. I have so many fair memories, but my favorite happened when I was about 10 years old. There was a watermelon eating contest, and I won! I also remember my mom and dad, Bobbie Jo and Charles Seaver, taking my three brothers and two sisters to the fair when we were little. They had their hands full with us.

Go to the fair, look at the exhibits, support the community, go see the people you don’t see often enough, and eat a corn dog. I’m looking forward to the auction!


We are saddened by the loss of our friend and fellow

board member, Joy Shifflett. Joy will always be

remembered as a dedicated member to the Colusa

County Fair Board and the community. Joy enriched

and improved the Miss Colusa County Scholarship

program throughout the years. Her brilliance, passion

and energy is missed but remembered by all.

How long have you been involved in the Colusa County Fair?

Bernice: I have been working for the fair for 5 years as a seasonal/part time employee. However, my children were in 4-H still and livestock exhibitors since 1976, and I was the key leader for Colusa before that, as well as working on feature booths with club members. Also, in the late 1960’s, Gene and I owned the Town & Country Nursery and Florist and always put in a Garden Booth and loaned plants to the fair. I was also involved as a 4-H Ag Extension Home Economist and Advisor from 1964 – 67. So I have a long history with the Fair and have seen many changes.

Pam: I have been involved for a lifetime. First as a 4-H member in Maxwell and Colusa, then by entering clothing projects. Next, I entered the children that I cared for in my daycare with their projects. I started the cowboy boots last year, and this year we have 48 magician hats

being decorated by various preschools and daycares in the county. I’ve been volunteering at the fair for 3 years.

Why is our fair important to you?

Bernice: The fair offers an opportunity for everyone to display their talents, hobbies, and abilities, to be recognized and awarded for their talents, and for the public to appreciate others’ work. I get inspired and motivated when I see many of the beautiful entries, and I believe others do, too. The fair is a great time for reuniting and visiting with friends who often come just for that reason. The fair is a joyous, festive event, and it is so gratifying to see the attendees sitting along the walkways on the benches, relaxing, visiting, and reconnecting. The fair is still one historical tradition which the public can anticipate each year.

Pam: The fair is important for everyone involved. The children especially get a chance to show off their various projects, whether it’s art or raising a farm animal. It gives them a sense of pride in their hard work.

What is your favorite fair memory?

Bernice: My favorite fair memory is when my children helped other children prepare their animals and still exhibits for fair.

Why should we attend our fair?

Bernice: It is a community celebration of achievement. Every exhibitor is a winner!

Pam: Why not attend the fair? It only comes once a year and you have a chance to see not only the exhibits and animals, but the interesting entertainment.

How can people become involved in our local fair?

Bernice: The fair, if it is going to continue in the future, needs volunteers who help prepare for the fair months in advance, with helping hands, ideas, sponsorships (also recruiting sponsors and donors), and sprucing up the grounds. Even more, exhibiting is important.

Pam: If you want to be a volunteer, just go into the fair office and they will find something for you to do. It’s very rewarding, no matter how small a chore it is. The fair needs more volunteers now.

ost of us are familiar with the green and white worn by 4-H members

and the Blue and Gold of the FFA Programs. But are you aware that these programs teach your children many of life’s most important lessons? These lessons include:

• Respect for people, animals, and the rules of life.

• Responsibility, as they must raise and take care of their projects every day.

• Research, as they learn how to feed, care for, train and show their animal.

• Commitment, because for 90 to 300 days, they will spend a great deal of time with their project.

• Mentoring, as older members will teach and mentor the younger members.

• Learning how to demonstrate and present before their peers and adults.

• Learning how to keep records, because each youth must keep accurate records of expenses and receipts.

• Time management, as our programs take place before and after school, so they must learn to work with their projects consistently.

• The ability to say “goodbye”! This project or animal is usually sold to the highest bidder. Part of life is knowing how to say goodbye to loved ones, and this is a difficult lesson learned by these youth. They also learn compassion by helping others deal with this same lesson.

Do yourself and your child a favor and visit the livestock barns and speak with the children and teens involved in these programs to witness their maturity firsthand. Take some time to watch the livestock auctions on Saturday, then contact the organization necessary to enroll your child in one of these programs.

Devin Kelley has been coordinating the Miss Colusa County Pageant for over 10 years. She was involved in Stagehands as a child. Her mother directed the pageant for over 30 years and Devin was a

contestant in 1996. She enjoys working with the girls and watching them shine on stage after all of their hard work. Devin believes that our local pageant is one of the best in the state. She says, “The state has actually commended Colusa County for a great pageant. The young ladies are a representation of our wonderful county.”

Sisters Jyl Torrens and Nina Rudiger are keeping the family tradition alive by coordinating the Mini-Miss Pageant together. They say, “The pageant has been in our family since 1998, so we’ve been involved in some capacity since then.” Their mom, Sheryl Perry, took over coordinating the pageant after their dance teacher and founder of the pageant,

Colleen Holt, moved to Texas. They joke that their mom has now become the Mini-Miss babysitter! She helps watch their little ones at home while they practice with the girls, and they couldn’t do it without her!

Jyl and Nina encourage you to come watch this year, because “it’s a great show and fun to watch, even if you don’t know someone participating in the pageant! These young ladies work really hard to prepare for the pageant and it takes a lot of courage to get up on stage. They deserve your support and encouragement! Hearing the cheers from the crowd makes them feel proud - you can see it on their faces!” Their favorite thing about living in Colusa County are the small town, time-honored traditions.

They believe that many of these activities are continued today because they are led by community members who participated when they were young, in events much like the mini-miss pageant.

Jyl and Nina were both Mini-Miss and Miss Colusa County title holders. They care about the program, and love seeing the girls gain confidence and develop public speaking skills from participating in the pageant, and hope to pass on that same enthusiasm. They believe that one of these young ladies could be taking the pageant over from them one day!

Colusa County Fair Foundation / Frances Dunning Etchepare Memorial Garden

Miss and Mini-Miss Directors

Leon Etchepare served as a member and past president of the Colusa County Fair Board (CCFF). After his death in 1976, the Fair Board

dedicated Etchepare Hall in his name.

Allen Etchepare approached then CEO Susie Clark about his family contributing to the maintenance and repair of the building as well as the need to create a tax-exempt charitable organization to facilitate

community donations for future needs and projects. CEO Clark worked diligently with the Fair Board to create what is now the Colusa County Fair Foundation (CCFF).

Frances Etchepare, Leon’s widow and an avid gardener, was actively involved in planning the new landscaping at Etchepare Hall when she passed away in July 2013. The Etchepare Family continued the project and have named it Frances Dunning Etchepare Memorial Garden in her honor. The CCFF has planned a Dedication of the Garden on Friday, June 5th at 8PM.

The Memorial Garden was designed as an

educational venue for the UC Master Gardeners and Colusa County Garden Club as well as a social and business gathering place for the community.

The interior garden plant design was done by John and Diane Vafis with a drought tolerant, low water use theme and will be planted by members of the UC Master Gardeners and Colusa Garden Club.

What can people do to help? Join the CCFF! Support and attend fundraising events to help raise funds to maintain, improve, and grow our wonderful fairgrounds.

From the kitchen of Alma Hickel

Chicken Rice Casserole3 or 4 chicken breasts2 cups of rice1 7-oz can of chopped green chiles 1 cup sour cream1 can cream of chicken soup1 can cream of mushroom soup3/4 tablespoon of garlic salt1 tsp. oregano1 tbsp. of fresh or dry parsley Salt and pepper1lb. Monterey Jack cheese

Bake 3 chicken breasts wrapped in foil in a 350 oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Let cool. Cook 2 cups of rice in 4 cups of water, add a dash of salt to this while cooking. Bring to a boil, turn heat down to simmer, and cook for 20 minutes. Put rice in bottom of a 9 x 13 casserole dish. Add the can of drained chilies. Cut up chicken into small chunks, add to casserole. Mix together in separate pan and heat for a few minutes the sour cream, soups, seasonings and salt and pepper. Pour over the casserole and mix well, so that all ingredients are mixed. Add 1 lb. of Monterey Jack cheese slices or shredded over the top. Bake for 35 minutes in a 350 oven uncovered. Serves 12.

Alma Hickel. Marie Spooner, and Patti Jo Cairo have years of experience in entering their homemade goods in the Colusa County Fair. Last year, something unusual happened. The fair awarded not one, but two Best in Show ribbons, because the judges could not determine just one winner. Patti Jo Cairo and Marie Spooner both deserved the prize!

Alma, Marie, and Patti Jo and would like to share a recipe with you. Hope you enjoy!

Penuche 2 cups white sugar 2 cups brown sugar 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup White Karo 1 cup cream 1 cup nuts 2 tsp. vanilla Mix first 5 items and slowly cook over heat until they form a soft ball. Cool slightly and then beat until mixture starts to thicken. Add nuts & vanilla; pour into buttered 8”x 8” pan.

1/3 cup shortening½ cup sugar

2 eggs1¾ sifted all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder½ teaspoon soda½ teaspoon salt1 cup mashed ripe bananas½ cup chopped walnuts

Cream together shortening and sugar; add eggs and

beat well. Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with banana, blending well after each addition. Stir in nuts.

Pour into well-greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Bake in moderate oven (350) 45-50 minutes or until done. Remove from pan; cool on rack. Wrap and store overnight.
