A new day, a new challenge; dawn approaches as a ray of light begins to break over the jagged horizon to
the East. A sweet fragrance lingers heavy in the air, rising in plumes from delicately posi oned s cks of
incense, each brought to purpose via a nearby warming Hydrotech ke le. The site of the Sangdo Palri
Temple of Wisdom and Compassion, hand chosen for its rugged beauty and profound silence, begins to
come back to life with the click of a roofing harness.
THE ROOFING SYSTEM The phasing of Sangdo Palri was that of a unique design‐build process, the complex coordina on of which
con nually challenged our team. The project itself was built by means of a hand‐rendered set of plans;
masterfully tailored by an on‐site architect. Following comprehensive research by Mangala Shri Bhu ,
Grand County Roofing & Sheet Metal, dba The Roofing Company, was selec vely contacted by MSB in hopes
that TRC would be willing to tackle a project of such a nature. The ini al sketches by the Temple outlined a
series of roofs which were to be incorporated with decora ve, metal shingles. Though “Sangdo Palri”
directly translates as “Copper Colored Mountain”, the lower “copper” roof were addi onally accented with
two overlying “gold” roofs at the pinnacle of the structure. Therein, following a stringent selec on
process amongst mul ple steel finish samples and manufacturer color charts from across the na on, Drexel
Metallic Copper and CMG “custom” Metallic Gold were each hand‐selected as the final aesthe c choices for
the Sangdo Palri Temple. It was the hope of the architect that the combined facet would evoke a unique,
emo ve response within the human psyche.
Due to its ability to meet the inherent higher service temperatures which would be required of the outlined
metal roofing assembly, the crew began work by applying Grace High Temperature Ice & Water Shield over
the en re roofing surface. Each individually locking shingle, both gold & copper, was custom fabricated;
each individually engineered for its finite placement within the structure’s pre‐mapped roofing assembly.
These interlocking shingles were further strengthened via a trademark TRC hidden fastener system. The
roofline of the structure, ar s cally arched in reminiscence of Japanese style architecture, required precise
field measurement. These measurements, established by the TRC team, were then relayed over 200 miles
back to Granby (CO) where further crea ve engineering was required before the final calcula ons were
released for internal TRC fabrica on. In this manner, each and every component of the final roofing
materials and decora ve overlay were handcra ed either in our shop or in the field by our master
metalsmiths.
SAFETY Safety is an extreme priority for The Roofing Company, no ma er how large or small the project; Sangdo
Palri was no excep on. That being said, the par cular design of the steep temple roof required a crea ve
approach to our anchoring of equipment and manpower during the installa on of all phases and layers of
the roofing materials. As a gesture of respect in the religious requirements for the building, at no me were
the workers directly anchored from the peak itself. Alterna vely, anchor points were located at the gables
of the structure where padded planking was cau ously placed over the handcra ed gold shingles. Special
anchor points were addi onally located at the scaffold planking to allow for freedom of movement and for
the safety of the workers. It may be further noted that The Roofing Company tethered all tools and
equipment to individual crew members via high tensile lanyards.
LOGISTICS & RESTRICTIONS
Though an archetype for those seeking seclusion, the
Temple was found to be an extreme challenge in logis cs.
As the Temple is situated in such a remote loca on deep
in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, what most may
take for granted on“standard” projects, o en mes fell
into the realm of distant luxuries amidst the alpine peaks.
Cell phones were rendered u erly useless in the shadow
of some of the tallest peaks that the state has to offer.
The area, addi onally, featured no running water with the
extent of on‐site power being supplied via solar panels
erected at the exterior of the structure. Furthermore,
while on the project site itself, it is of special note that the
TRC crew willingly navigated the project site via clockwise
“circumambula on”, the act of going around an object of
venera on in a clockwise manner. In supply of this crew,
the loca on of the project site from TRC’s home office was
such that each delivery of custom fabricated material
required delivery mes in excess of nine hours. There
were many mes that such supply trips were conducted
mul ple mes per week; each trip made in hopes that
access via a four wheel drive road would be a ainable in
and of itself. Heavy alpine snow, driving rain, remote
inaccessibility; each an unrelen ng variable as crews
con nuously made efforts to meet the demands outlined
within the renderings of an evolving roof plan.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
The Sangdo Palri Temple stands as a testament to the
crea vity and collabora on of each of the trades that had
the fortune of being involved. In a project that truly
comes about once in a life me, TRC is proud to claim such
a privileged aesthe c role. Though there are a handful of
companies that may have been able to address the
requirements of either the performance or aesthe cs that
a project of this nature may require, the ability to
intrinsically intertwine the two takes a very specialized
and dedicated team. It is our hope that the Temple
con nues to fulfill its mission; to radiate hope, inspire
crea vity, promote op mism, and quite possibly, to
transcend the awakened mind itself. We at The Roofing
Company feel honored to have been a part of such an
amazing, unique project.
