Humanity is facing grand challenges. “Sustainable Development” is a shorthand for addressing

these challenges. While decades of efforts have brought progress in some areas, the overall

necessary transformation has not been adequately addressed. Interdisciplinary teamwork is a

prerequisite for sustainable development, in particular, if the specific challenges of a region are

to be taken into account. To address the challenges of the future, the legacies of the past have

to be considered. This consideration is missing from a lot of sustainability-oriented teaching and

research.

We would like to introduce you to a perfect opportunity to learn about this missing competence

in an international, interdisciplinary setting. In the period 2013-2015, the University of Trieste in

cooperation with the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, the University of Natural Resources and

Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna and the University of Novi Sad, offer a unique opportunity for young

career researchers to familiarize themselves with issues pertinent to the sustainable development

of the Danube River Basin. While the 2013 and 2014 editions were dedicated to “Interdisciplinary

Methods for the Sustainable Development of the Danube Region” and “The Role of Natural Heritage

for the Sustainable Development of the Danube Region” respectively, the 2015 edition will focus

on “The Role of Cultural Heritage for the Sustainable Development of the Danube Region”.

DIAnet International Schools are part of the Capacity Building Module of the Danube:Future

project, a Flagship Project of the EUSDR - the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region, in

the Priority Area Knowledge Society. Danube:Future is a joint network project of the Alps-Adriatic

Rector’s Conference (AARC) and the Danube Rector’s Conference (DRC). It aims at capacity

building in the Danube River Basin (DRB) and at providing networking to aid the development

common research projects for a sustainable future of the DRB.

PhD Students and Post-Doc Research Fellows from AARC and DRC Universities from all countries

of the Danube Basin are welcome to apply for one, two or all three schools. The organizing

universities will issue a certificate of 3 ECTS for the completion of each edition. During the School,

students will gain knowledge about the role of cultural heritage for the sustainable development

of the Danube river basin (DRB). The School covers a wide range of subjects. During the two lecture

days, students will receive training in Conservation and Preservation and Valorization of cultural

heritage. Two full-day excursions to the area of Torviscosa and Villa Manin (day 1) and to the area

of Trieste (day 2), will offer a unique opportunity for students to engage with the sustainability

challenges of the Macro-Region.

The second half of the school is dedicated to group work by students. Participants will be divided

into six working groups, each of them representing a variety of disciplines and countries as well

as PhD-students and young post-doc researchers. Working groups will identify a common idea for

a future project, which addresses one of the societal challenges of Horizon 2020 and takes into

account the challenges of the DRB. Draft project proposals developed in working groups should

ideally represent a part of an application to a funding authority. Group presentations with direct

feedback by an evaluation committee will end the experience. English is the official language of

the School.

The sustainability challenges addressed by Horizon 2020 requires international and

interdisciplinary approaches. Each of these challenges will play out differently in different areas

of Europe and will require both localized knowledge (as reflected, e.g. in knowledge of local

languages and historical legacies influencing the available paths for development) and an

overarching approach. By linking a specific area, i.e. the Danube River Basin, a target area of a

macro-regional strategy of the EU, with the Grand Challenges of Horizon 2020 and building an

interdisciplinary network of young scholars, DIAnet schools contribute to the preparation and

workability of Horizon 2020. By offering experience in interdisciplinary group work, DIAnet schools

engage in capacity building in a crucial area and at a crucial moment. By mapping the EUSDR

challenges onto Horizon 2020, DIAnet schools pave the way for successful participation in Horizon

2020. This is a unique opportunity to learn and interact in interdisciplinary groups with a high-

level international faculty.

The expertise of the involved institutions ensures high scientific standards and the facilitation of

interdisciplinary student groups. Lecturers from the universities of AARC and DRC (the organizing

universities and other universities of the Network) and local experts will ensure that students get

up-to-date, place-specific instruction.

The Proceedings of the 2013 and 2014 editions can be downloaded directly from the Danube:Future

website (www.danubefuture.eu/dianet-international-school ).

DIAnet 2015 can be offered to you at minimal cost: living expenses are covered by the European

Social Fund (Friuli Venezia Giulia OP 2007/2013). You might also be eligible for travel assistance

by your home university. The participation to the School is free: no fees are required.
