    Tom Akers enters his 20th year as the head coach at Eastern Illinois University helping the Panthers create one of the most dominant track programs in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference. AkersisthedirectorofthePantherstrackandfield/crosscountryprogramswhileservingastheheadcoachforboththemensandwomenstrackandfieldprograms.Hecurrentlycoachesmiddledistance,hurdlesandsprintsashisspecialtyareabuthascoachedeveryeventareaduringhislongcoachingcareer. SincehelpingthePantherstransitionintotheOVCforthe1997season,EIUhaswon15of18OVCMensIndoorTrackChampionshipsand14of18OVCMensOutdoorChampionships.EachtimeAkershasbeennamedtheOVCCoachoftheYear.In2009hetookoverdutiesasthewomensheadtrackcoachaswellleadingthePantherstofourstraightOVCWomensIndoorandOutdoortitlesfrom2009-12. In2013theEIUmensteamwonitsfifthstraightindoorandoutdoorandtrackchampionshipswhilethewomensteamwonitsfifthstraightoutdortitle.ThePanthershadthosechampionshipstreakssnappedin2014butdidhaveseveralindividualsexcelwithPeterGeraghtyandMickVikenbothearningAll-Americanhonorsinthepolevault.Duringthe2014seasonEIUsentsixindividualsandonerelayteamtothe NCAA Regional. Inadditiontowinningthoseteamtitles,Akershasalsocoached19athleteswhohavecapturedtheOVCTrackandFieldAthleteoftheYearawardincludingCalvinEdwards(2014OVCIndoorTrackAthleteoftheYear),DarrenPatterson(2010OVCIndoorTrackAthleteoftheYear),ZyeBoey(2009and2011Indoor;2009,2010,2011and2012OutdoorTrackAthleteoftheYear),DanielStrackeljahn(2007IndoorTrackAthlete)andObeEruteya(2006FieldAthlete).OnthewomenssideAkerscoachedMeganGingerichwhowasnamedthe2010OVCIndoorFemaleAthleteoftheYear. In2012AkerscoachedZyeBoey tooneof themostdecoratedseasons inschoolhistory. BoeyearnedAll-Americanhonors inthe200mdashattheNCAAIndoorNationalChampionships. Hewould laterearnAll-Americanhonorsat theNCAAOutdoorNationalChampionshipsin100mand200msprints.Inthesummerof2012BoeycompetedattheUSOlympicTrialsinbothevents. Heservedastheinterimheadcoachinspringof1995beforebeingnamedheadcoachforthe1996season.DuringhisfirsttwoseasonsEIUcompetedintheMid-ContinentConferencesweepingtheIndoorandOutdoorchampionshipsbothseasons. HewaspromotedtoDirectorofTrack/FieldandCrossCountryin2002.Duringhistenureasheadcoach,EIUhashadsixDivisionIAll-Americansalongwithmorethan200individualOVCconferencechampions.UnderAkersdirectionthePanthershavealsohad23OVCAthletesoftheYear,7OVCFreshmenoftheYearand6OVCChampionshipMVPs. From1983-90,AkerswasanEIUassistantcoachwhenthePantherswonsixindoor/outdoorsMid-ContinentConference championships.Hewas responsibleforrecruitingandcoachingEasternsfirstNCAADivisionINationalChampion,JimMatonfromShelbyville,whowasafourtimeNCAAAll-Americanin1987-88.Matonwonthe800meterrun(1:49.3)atthe1988NCAAindoorchampionship.AmultipleMid-ContinentConferencechampionandleagueAthleteoftheYear,Matonholdsmost school records in the middle distance events. Akersalso recruitedDanSteele fromSherrardHighSchool.HewasatwotimeDivisionIAll-Americanandnationalchampioninthe400hurdlesin1992.Histwinbrother,Darrin,wasanAll-Americandecathletein1992.BothweremembersoftheUSAOlympicBobsledTeamthatcompetedinthe1998NaganoWinterOlympics,andthenDanwasamemberoftheBronzeMedalwinningbobsledteamatthe2002SaltLakeCityOlympics.

In2009EIUclimbedashighasNo.33intheIndoorNationalrankingsasseniorDavidHolmandfreshmanZyeBoeybothadvancedtotheNCAAIndoorNationalChampionships.BoeywouldlateradvancetotheNCAAOutdoorNationalChampionshipsfinishingoffoneofthemostsuccessfultrackseasonsinEIUhistory.Boeyagainburstontothenationalscenein2011asheplaced7thattheNCAAIndoorNationalChampionshipsinthe200mearningfirstteamAll-Americanhonors.HeearnedhonorablementionAll-Americahonorsin2011duringtheoutdoorseasonadvancingtotheNCAAOutdoorChampionshipsinthe100mdash. From1990-94,AkerswasamemberofthedepartmentofExerciseandSportSciencesattheUniversityofArizona.Duringhistenurethere,heservedastheassistanttrackcoachatPaloVerdeHighSchoolin1992,andthenstartedtheboys/girlstrackprogramatCatalinaFoothillsHighSchoolinTucson. AkersreceivedhisundergraduatedegreefromtheUniversityofNorthernIowain1979.Whiletherehewasatwo-timeco-captainandsetschoolandconferencerecordsinthe110and400meterhurdles.Hisconferencerecordinthe110stoodfor17yearsuntilbrokenin1996.Aneight-timenationalqualifier,heearned1979All-Americanhonorsinthe400hurdles.     InherfirstsixseasonsatEIUSommerfeldhascoached13OVCchampionsandsevenathletesthathaveadvancedtotheNCAARegionalduringtheoutdoorseason.ThePanthershavesweptboththemensandwomensindoorandoutdoorconferencechampionshipsinfourofthesixseasonswithSommerfeld on the staff.

    Duringthe2014seasonSommerfeldcoachedayounggroupthatconsistedofnineunderclassmencompetitors.ThatgrouppostedsixmarksthatrankedintheEIUcareertoptenduringtheindoorandoutdoorseasons.

    Duringthe2012seasonherthrowerspostedeightmarksthatlandedintheEIUcareertoptenafterhergroupposted12marksthatlandedintheEIUcareer top ten list in 2011.

    In2010SommerfeldcoachedEIUthrowerKandaceArnoldasshesetfiveEIUrecordsforthrowsandwasnamedtheOVCFemaleAthleteoftheYear.Arnoldwouldplace8thintheshotputattheNCAARegionalbecomingthefirstEIUfemaletrackathletetoadvancetotheNCAANationalChampionships.Arnoldwouldfinish16thinthenation.

    PriortocomingtoEIUsheworkedfourseasonsatSouthDakotaStateUniversitywhereshecoachedthrowingeventsfortheJackrabbits.SommerfeldcoachedseveralIndependentchampionsinthrowingeventsasSDSUmadethetransitionfromtheNCAADivisionIItoNCAADivisionIlevel.TheteamcompetedasamemberoftheSummitLeaguein2008finishingsecondinboththeindoorandoutdoorchampionships.

    AmonghercoachingaccomplishmentsatSDSUwerecoachingfourregionalqualifiersintheshotputanddiscus.Sommerfeldsthrowersestablishedschoolrecordsinthemensjavelin,menshammerandwomenshammerforoutdoortrackwhilesettingnewmarksformensandwomensweightthrowindoors.Herathletesholdacombined18topfivemarksforthrowingevents.ShecoachedSaraAckmantotheUSATFJuniorNationalsinthediscuswhereAckmanearnedJuniorAll-Americanhonors.

    SommerfeldalsocoachedatTCUfortwoseasonshelpingtheHornedFrogswinthe2003ConferenceUSAmensoutdoortitleand2004C-USAwomensindoorcrown.ShecoachedformerhighschoolstandoutZelmaWadetoaqualifyingmarkfortheJuniorNationalMeetheldinCollegeStation,Texas.

    AformerWesternAthleticConferencechampionintheshotput,SommerfeldcompetedatRiceUniversitywinningtheschoolsJoycePoundsHardyAwardfortopstudent-athletein2001.Sheswepttheindoorandoutdoorshotputtitlesin2000and2001whilealsoscoringpointsinthejavelinanddiscus.

    AnativeofLisbon,N.D.,sheearnedherundergraduatedegreeatRicein2001beforetransferringtoworkonhermastersdegreeatArkansas.Sommerfeldcompleted her masters in 2002.

    WhileatArkansasshesettheschoolrecordinthejavelinqualifyingfortheUSAChampionships.ShealsoplacedsecondintheSoutheasternConferenceOutdoorChampionshipsintheshotput.Whileinhighschool,Sommerfeldwasathreetimestatechampionandstaterecordholderintheshotput.In1997shewasajuniornationalAll-American.

Saddledwithayoungwomenssquadofdistancerunnersin2013helpedleadthewomensteamtoathirdplacefinishintheOVCChampionshipsastheeightscorerrunnerswerecomprisedofallfreshmenandsophomores.DuringtheseasonEIUrunnerspostedtoptentimesinthewomens5K,womens6Kandmens10Kdistances.Hecoached two runners tosecond teamAll-OVChonorswithRileyMcInerneyforthemenandVictoriaQuartonforthewomenbothplacing in the top14at the leaguemeet.During the2014 trackseasonButlerhelpedcoachthedistancerunnersastheyposted11marksintheschooltoptenonthemensandwomensside.,FreshmanrunnerEmilyBrelsfoardsettheschoolrecordintheoutdoor10K. In2012ButlerhelpedEIUdistancerunnersagainimproveupontheirtimes.ThemensteamplacedsecondintheOVCChampionshipswhilethewomenplacedthird.Twoindividualrunners(BryceBastingandBritneyWhitehead)bothplaced37thattheNCAARegionalmeetforthemenandwomen.,SixathletesearnedAll-OVChonorswithfouronthefirstteam(twomenandtwowomen).Duringthetrackseason,ButlerhelpedthedistancecrewpostseveralpersonalbestswithWhiteheadsettingtheschoolrecordinthe1500mandsteeplechase.     TRACK & FIELD FACILITIESThePanthertrackandfieldteamcompetesbothindoorsandoutdoors intwoofthefinestfacilitiesintheMidwest.OBrien Field, a 10,000 seat venue, has anew state-of-the-art Panther blue full pourpolyurethane all-weather track. Besides theninelanetrack,thenewsurfacealso includestwolongjumpandtriplejumprunways,twopolevaultpits,andahighjumparea.

    ThestadiumisthesiteoftheannualIllinoisHighSchoolAssociationGirls andBoysStateTrackChampionships. Over 4000 competitors and20,000spectatorscometoEIUeachMayforthesestate meets. The girls championship has been held at EIU every year since its inception in 1973. The boysmeethasbeenafixtureatOBrienStadiumsince1974.

InMay2011theConferenceexpandedforthesecondtimeinfouryears,addingBelmontUniversitywhichbeginscompetitioninthe2012-13academicyear.TheadditionofBelmontgivestheOVC12members,themost the leaguehashadatone time in its illustrioushistory.Themoveaddeda second team in the city ofNashville andwas the firstaddition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsvillejoinedin2008. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as BethDeBauchewas named the seventh full-timeCommissioner in leaguehistory on July 28, 2009. She is currently one of just five females tobetheheadofaDivisionIconference,andoneofjusteighttoleadaDivisionIconferenceall-time.ThelastthreecommissionersoftheOVChavemovedontojobsasthecommissioneroftheBigTen,Big12andtheMid-AmericanConferences. TheOVCsproudhistorydatesbackto1948,butseedsforthenewleague were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart,the athletics director at Murray State, Charles Turkey Hughes, theathleticsdirectoratEasternKentucky,andKellyThompson,thepublicrelationsdirectoratWesternKentucky,firstbroachedtheideaofforminganewconference.DiscussionswereputonholdbyWorldWarII,butreemergedFeb.27-28,1948attheKentuckyHotelinLouisvilleasthethreeoriginalinstitutionscombinedwithMoreheadState,LouisvilleandEvansville to form the OVC. In the late1970s,womensathleticsbegansomewhatofa rebirthon the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing womenssports.Recognizingtheneedtoprovideincreasedopportunitiesforfemaleathletes,theOVCestablishedwomenschampionshipsinthesportsofbasketball, tennisand track in1977,withcrosscountryandvolleyballaddedover thenext fouryears. Thosesportswere initiallygoverned by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women(AIAW),buttheoverallstrengthofwomensprogramsintheleaguewasdemonstratedby theautomaticbids theOVC instantly receivedwhentheNCAAbecamethegoverningbodyin1982. Overits64years,OVCteamshavegarnerednationalchampionshipsandbowlgamesinfootball,alongwithnationalteamorindividualtitlesinthesportsofrifle,crosscountry,trackandgolf.

    The OVC has also produced several Olympic athletes, includingMurrayStatesMorganHicks,whowasamemberof the2004UnitedStates Olympic Rifle Team and Morehead States Brian Shimer whocompetedinfiveWinterOlympicsinbobsled(winningabronzemedalin2002)andcoachedthe2010UnitedStatesbobsledteamtoitsfirstgoldmedalsince1948.Inaddition,someofthegreatestplayersinprofessionalsportswereeducatedatOVCinstitutions.Thelistincludesformergreatssuch as footballs Phil Simms (Morehead State), basketballs ClemHaskins(WesternKentucky)andBubbaWells(AustinPeay)andtwo-sport starSteveHamilton (MoreheadState) topresent-day standoutslikebasketballplayerTrentonHassell(AustinPeay),footballplayerTonyRomo (Eastern Illinois) and baseball players George Sherrill (AustinPeay) and JonRauch (MoreheadState).Hamilton is theonly athleteto ever play in the NCAABasketball Championship, aMajor LeagueBaseballWorldSeries(NewYorkYankees)andaNBAChampionshipSeries(LosAngelesLakers).
