Student PapersEmmitt Lockard (ENI Petroleum)The Deepwater Technical Symposium is committed to providingstudents opportunities to enhance their university educationexperience by providing them an excellent opportunity to learnmore about how science and technology are applied to the problemsencountered in the oil and gas industry. Our goal is to give students a venue to present their research duringthe two days of the symposium in oral and poster sessions and tocreate an environment where they can learn more about their career interests and to network with professionals working in the petroleumindustry.

Drilling TechnologyGary Roebke (Chevron), Rick Farmer (Stone Energy)The 2015 Drilling Technology Session is focused on technologiesused to meet the challenges of drilling in the deepwater GOM.Technologies to be discussed include: 1) Use of real-time data tomitigate operational risks; 2) Radioactive tracers pumped with thecement, used in primary and remedial zonal isolation; 3) Eliminationof long rat-hole sections in DW wells utilizing a downlinkabledigital reamer; 4) Multi-service integration methodology for determining zonal isolation; 5) Sustained casing pressure mitigation(on abandonments) using a high expansion section mill; 6) Hybrid drill bits technology; 7) Operational time savings utilizing wired drill pipe; 8) Casing drill bit system; 9) Mechanics of slip crush whenlanding heavy casing strings; and 10) Multi-set infl atable packer for large ID tubulars.

Reservoir & EconomicsMike Vercher (LLOG), Yuqi Du (ENI Petroleum)The 2015 Reservoir & Economics Session is focused on optimizingthe development of Gulf of Mexico deepwater reservoirs. Deepwater developments have become very economically challenging, requiringthe right development, the optimum completion and improved understanding of rock and fl uid properties and how they relate toreserves, compartmentalization, well productivity and reservoir management. This year’s session will include presentations related to the ramp up of one of the industry’s newest deepwater developments (Jack St. Malo),maximizing economics by minimizing the time to fi rst oil, optimizingthe acquisition and analysis of fl uids, improving the process for acquisition of rock property data on wireline, and employing theoptimum completion to improve reservoir management.

Emerging TechnologyAngie Gobert (BSEE)The technological limits of the oil and gas industry in deepwater Gulf of Mexico are not only being tested by operational challengesof the extreme water depths, but also those from hostile geologicenvironments, deep wells with extreme pressures and temperatures, loop currents, and tropical storms and hurricanes. The Emerging Technologies Session will feature presenters withknowledge and experience in quantifying risks associated withchallenging hostile environments, advanced coiled tubing technology, timely discoveries in the area of well control risk management and innovative well containment technologies. Their presentations willprovide insight into these new technology advances demonstratingcreative solutions and illustrate new methods to overcome some of the technological hurdles that will ultimately provide the means tohelp lead the industry in creating and delivering the value necessaryto move forward in deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

Completions & InterventionsWilliam Franke (Hess), Alexander Rudnik (Schlumberger),Elspeth Chance (Shell)Completions and interventions are continuing to receive signifi cant focus from deepwater operators. Designing completions around well life cycle, improved integrity, and reducing interventionshave become paramount for enhancing economics and improvingoverall recovery. The Completions and Interventions Session willfocus on some of the diffi cult challenges that are faced in deepwater completions and the learnings and technologies developed toovercome those challenges. Our session will explore several newtechnologies designed to improve completion reliability, longevity, and injectivity performance. In addition, the session will focus onimprovements in subsea intervention strategy, deepwater P&A best practices, and new technologies for light interventions.

Pipelines/Subsea InfrastructureAngie Gobert (BSEE), Allen Wiley (Halliburton)As the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico progresses intoextreme water depths, one challenge is how to design and safelyoperate the pipelines that carry hydrocarbons from subsea wellsto processing facilities. To meet the critical and complex issuespresented by this challenge, the industry has made signifi cant advances in pushing pipeline technology past previous limits and considering future subsea production concerns. Much work hasbeen done on researching and designing specialized equipment including steel catenary and hybrid risers, jumpers, PLET’s and sleds, umbilicals, high integrity pressure protection systems (HIPPS)and other associated subsea infrastructure pipeline components. The 2015 Pipelines/Subsea Infrastructure Session will feature 4presenters with knowledge and experience in factors that affect thedesign, installation, and operations of deepwater pipelines and thesubsea infrastructures. Their presentations will provide valuableinsight into deepwater pipeline future subsea production considerationsand cyclic thermal loads, along with a case study of a major project involving HIPPS in deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Creative pipelineinfrastructure solutions developed to address subsea tie back challengesencountered will be shared from the perspectives of both, the leaseoperator/producer and a leading international technical advisor. Theseprovided insights, viable solutions, and shared considerations willincrease our awareness and knowledge as we continue creating and delivering value in deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

MarineBob Vaughn (Bourbon), Wayne Bridgeman (Chevron)Vessels are the primary workhorses of the logistics chain in deepwater exploration, drilling and production. The marine assets which enabledeepwater activities are themselves subjects of innovation, effi ciencyand cost effectiveness. From safe, effi cient crew transport to highcapacity deepwater Platform Support Vessels, highly technical MultiPurpose Support Vessels, and large Anchor Handling Towing SupplyVessels, these assets make deepwater exploration possible. Add theincreasingly complex Remotely Operated Vehicles and you have amechanical marine ecosystem of growing importance. In this session, speakers will discuss a procedure for Rigless, RiserlessSubsea P&A with Binary Plugs. The cost effectiveness of operationswhich can be accomplished from vessels rather than rigs cannot beignored. Also to be discussed are Field Trials of the Rope and Riser Crawling Vehicle. The discussion of this vehicle designed to addressthe lack of Non-Destructive Testing methods for synthetic mooringropes is quite informative.

Creating and Delivering Valuein a Low Price Environment:

Four Points of ViewThis year’s Management Panel or closing PlenarySession will focus on our Symposium theme of “Creating and Delivering Value in a Low Price Environment”. Over the last 12 months oil prices have dropped over 40%. As a result, the economic viability of deepwater projects has been severely tested.

This year we will have executives from 4 sectors of the Gulf of Mexico deepwater industry tell us how their companies are responding to the challenges of today’s low prices. Chevron will present the perspective of anintegrated major oil company. With new Gulf of Mexico projects recently on line, and the announcement of numerous new discoveries, Chevron is managing largeprojects in all stages of value chain. LLOG will discusshow they, as a major independent, are addressing thechallenges of low prices while continuing an activedeepwater drilling campaign and bringing on newprojects. Next, Halliburton will present the challengesas they respond to the push to reduce the costs of thegoods and services they provide while still deliveringvalue. And last, providing the outside view of theanalyst will be Wood Mackenzie.

The session will conclude with an open Q&A from the Symposium participants.
