GIRL SCOUT PROMISE

On my honor, I will try:To serve God and my country,To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Beth CaseyChief Executive Officer

GIRL SCOUT LAW

I will do my best to behonest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do,and torespect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, andbe a sister to every Girl Scout.

Dear Girl Scout Family & Friends,It has been an amazing year here at Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council. It is humbling to look back at the year’s accomplishments, because we know that the work we do is multiplied by the thousands of Girl Scouts and volunteers in our council who are taking action to improve their local schools, churches and neighborhoods every day. Each day, we see the positive impact Girl Scouts has on our girls as they explore new opportunities, create lasting friendships, and take action in their communities. We are proud to serve as leaders of an organization that fills a community need and builds up girls who are working to make their communities stronger.

During 2015, we saw girls experience their unique interests in our high school STEM programs. Many girls dedicated time to volunteering and making a difference in their hometowns. Over 160 girls from across 9 states joined us at the Bechtel Summit for the ultimate outdoor experience. We even had Black Diamond Girl Scouts spend the night at the White House!

This 2015 Impact Report reflects the extent and excitement of our Girl Scout year. Because of your support, Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council continues to provide our girls with opportunities that will help them reach their fullest potential. With your continues feedback and engagement, we will ensure that girls have a safe, positive space to thrive.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Andrea SmartChair, Board of Directors

Gold Award Project: Fun for EveryoneIn this project, Lindsey identified that in her community,

there wasn’t much for handicapped children to do. She was

determined to provide them with a place that they could have fun

in a safe environment. Lindsey’s project involved installing two

handicapped swing sets and two wheelchair accessible tables in a

local state park.

“My Gold Award taught me how to advocate for an issue I’m passionate about.”

Girl Scouting’s highest awards—the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards—are a Girl Scout’s chance to make a lasting difference in their community and in the world.

We plan to make Swag Bags for the kids that go to House of the Carpenter (our new meeting place). We will put toiletries, school supplies, and something fun in them! We would also like to use our cookie money to go to Idlewild for one of their scout programs.

Five girls doesn’t seem like a big group, but we make up for our small size with determination and perseverance. We are Girl Scout Troop #31304, and our goal is to raise enough money to go to Walt Disney World and participate in a special youth education program. During the program, we will learn about different cultures at Epcot and learn about what it means to be a global citizen today. This will not only broaden our horizons but will also teach us to respect and appreciate other cultures. We know that it will be expensive, but we work together and stay positive. We’re not just group members, we’re friends and we have fun. Though we haven’t reached our goal yet, I’m excited, and I can’t wait to meet Mickey Mouse!

- Haven B., Cadette, Troop #31304

Cranberry Prosperity Elementary Girl Scout Troop 51264, set a goal in the fall to spend their Fall Product Sale and Cookie Sale Money towards a Buddy Bench for their school. Cranberry is the only Leader in Me School in Raleigh County, and our students are being taught to be leaders in their community no matter what job they hold in the future. During our first fall meeting we were discussing ways we could help around the community or our school with the money we raise during the year. The girls thought the school was in need of a Buddy Bench so that if someone didn’t have a friend to play with at recess they could sit there. My Girl Scouts plan on keeping an eye out and if there is someone that needed a friend they would go over and ask them to play and Make a New Friend themselves. The girls plan on teaching their classmates about the bench and it’s use and hope to make lots of New Friends along the way.

VO LU N T E E R SHaving this opportunity it has allowed me to give back to one

of the amazing organizations that I believe molded me into hte person I am today. I am very blessed to be in my 13th year of

scouting with 10 years as a scout and 3 now as a leader. —Jessica Martin,Troop 37400

I’ve had the opportunity to find my second family. I’ve found a group of girls, parents, and fellow volunteers who are much more than Girl Scout acquaintances. I made life-long friends

when I was a girl in Girl Scouts and that tradition has continued now that I am an adult volunteer.

—Ashley Fizer, Troop 31780

I’ve been involved with Girl Scouts for twenty-three years, the last fifteen here with Black Diamond. As a military family, Girl

Scouts was always a way into a new community, a way to meet new people and place to learn new things. And who knew that I

would become a mentor for others on their journey.—Patricia Vincent, Troop 34206

I have only been involved in GS for three years. I had no knowledge of the organization prior to my daughter joining. We

have done so many things we wouldn’t have normally thanks to GIrl Scouts! I had to make sure the girls in our troop didn’t lose their chance to do wonderful things. In this little corner

of Appalachia, those kinds of opportunities are priceless and come rarely otherwise.

Bread of HopeLexi has begun her Bronze project titled “Bread of Hope.” The first 3 Fridays of the month she collected bread at her school and from local scouts with words of encouragement attached to go to local groups. The first Friday, she collected 40 loaves of bread and with the help of 3 sister brownie scouts from our troop she walked the bread down to our local food pantry. -Jessica Martin, Troop 37400, White Sulphur Springs, WV

Giving Back to Those in NeedMy Girl Scouts rocked it tonight, with help from the church (Winfield United Methodist), we collected enough personal hygiene items and some other items to fill over 2 dozen pairs of socks, 6 hats, 10 pairs of gloves, 2 purses and three scarves (took some creativity on their part to “fill” a scarf!). These will be donated to the homeless and the domestic violence shelter.- Reva Capehart, Troop 34458, Winfield, WV

Girls Have Hearts for the ElderlySo proud of my girls! They spent their Saturday handing out Valentine’s to the residents at Hillcrest nursing home and rehabilitation center. We met some amazing people. A former Girl Scout leader and service unit admin from Chapmanville and another lady who led Girl Guides in England. It was an amazing and emotional day.-Jessica Lambert, Troop 32447, Henlawson , WV

Cookies for CancerI am SO very proud of these girls!!! Not only did they fill 40 chemo care kits to brighten the day of local cancer patients at Strecker Cancer Center this week but they also just sold 6,920 boxes of Girl Scout cookies!!! Now

that’s A LOT of cookie! These girls are fierce and can move mountains!!!

Everyone had a blast at the 2014 Girl Scout Convention. It was a high-energy week that fueled our Movement in big ways! Girls and representatives from our council rallied around our cause along with more than 6,000 Girl Scouts and volunteers from around the world.

Our girls developed their leadership skills, learned from experts, and started Take Action projects along with hundreds of other Girl Scouts during the Girl Scout Leadership Institute. The 2014 convention was so amazing that we’re already looking forward to the 2017 Girl Scout Convention in Columbus!

We will see you there!
