    letter from the president

    Hello Ladies,

Well can you believe this is my last letter as President?

It sounds like such a clich but the year has gone so quickly and

sometimes so painfully slow at the same time. I cannot believe how much a club can achieve and pack into a year....

I feel like I have just got used to the role and now I am handing it over, albeit to a wonderful woman who will be a great President for the club.

My favourite personal highlights have been the Welcome/Halloween party as the costumes and the cake competition were amazing and created such a wonderful sense of family energy yet with a huge dose of competitiveness. I also learnt how to play Bunco and I have learnt how much I love having members who can cook incredible food from all over the world. The luck of having a cookie maker like Anna on the board too has meant the most delicious treats while having board meetings. I have learnt about mindfulness, I love Indian food and I love watching people sing and dance (who can forget the tango dancers).

From a club perspective, I have ended the year with such respect and admiration for the endless team of ladies and families who give up so much time to help our club be the strong club that it is. Welcoming new members, driving people to events, sewing, selling, baking, and running the groups that are a lifeline to some of our members. Language groups, exercise classes, book clubs, coffee groups, cinema trips all regardless of weather and personal time and expense.

To all you ladies, I really hope you realise how much the club appreciates you.

To all the committee members, I applaud you for the freetime you dedicate and for the sole reason of helping.

Each board has such a bonding experience together that I understand now why some of

the previous boards are still friends years later.

My own experience has been one of pure luck, as I have had such a unique and great bunch of ladies to work with. I say work because that is exactly what it is, a job you take so seriously and passionately that it can become all consuming. Yet it is voluntary. I have Ivana who has shown me how powerful dancing with your husband can be, Zizeth who is incredibly professional at all times yet has such a wonderful sense of fun. Eleanora who would do anything for anyone and has an incredible command of English humour and jokes. Susan is our dark horse and has had us laughing at times when we all need a pick up, usually in the form of hilarious pictures. Julia who is so proud of her husband and kids, she could burst. Anna, who is the best cookie maker ever and is an inspiration in her ability to share her valuable time. Melissa, who has the enviable skill of looking like she has come off a set of 1950s Mad Men set at all times and then of course we have Sushil. She came in at the 11th hour to stand in and has never looked back. No challenge is too big or too impossible for her to attempt...Together I call them all the "Benvenuto Insomniacs......"you are all wonderful and very hardworking....

So my last message to you all on this iconic 25th year of Benvenuto Monza, is a huge Thankyou to the ladies who started this club and for trusting us with it , it's purpose to help welcome English speaking women from all over the world and to create a " family " that we can all flourish in and be a part of. Thank you to all the ladies who work so hard to keep it running especially as it is all voluntary help.

    But mostly to all you members who join and m a k e i t t h e u n i q u e c l u b i t is..............Thankyou.

GETAWAY Just for a few days

    By Barbara De Savorgnani

Approximately three hours on the autostrada and another 50 mins on provincial roads (its a slow drive down) will take you to Beaulieu Sur Mer in the south of France on the Italian side of Nice. The drive down from the autostrada to the lower cornice is, itself, breathtaking. At the very beginning of the descent there is a lookout point overlooking Monaco - the view at night is fairyland but for a first visit do it by day, you can always go back in the evening just as it is turning dark. Beaulieu offers clean, public beaches (good for families) and promenades like the one beside the bay leading to the village of St Jean Cap Ferrat once the holiday venue of the rich and famous. Both Frank Sinatra and David Niven had homes there, and the small square outside David Nivens old home has been named after him. You can extend this walk another 40 mins and walk around the little Cap; when we were there I often swam off the rocks during my daily circumnavigation of the small cap, so if you feel like it dive in! A bigger walk is the one around the Cap itself (no swimming facilities) - about an hour and a half it takes you by the lighthouse and the Grand Hotel, with wonderful views of Villefrance and its bay.

Beaulieu is very central Nice and Monaco are on either side, both easily accessible by train, and the hinterland is soon reached by car Canyons di Verdun for example a 2 day visit in my opinion. Close by is also Eze a medieval village on the hill overlooking Eze Sur Mer very touristy but worth a visit. These days we stay at the Hotel Comte de Nice, which lies at the end of the main road in Beaulieu, very convenient but also very quiet it is a family run hotel and has the big advantage of a place to park the car, so no running out to put money in the meters at 6am!

So when autumn comes, and the skies are grey, give Beaulieu Sur Mer a thought a pleasant getaway to unwind and practice your French!

IN MEMORY OF MY BELOVED HUSBAND GIANFRANCO: A letter from Gabriella Mapelli

My dear Kako, my dear Meiliana, and all my dear friends around the world.

After 55 years of our life spent always together, side by side ... my beloved husband, my lover, my friend, my everything, is gone forever.

He was very ill, but despite the tremendous disease he still had the courage to go on. He was brave and even happy when I was with him, hand in hand, eyes to eyes ...

He was 76 years old and he could have lived some more years, if the terrible disaese couldn't have hit him.

We met when I was 18 and he was 22 ... He fell deeply in love with me just the first day he saw me. At that time I was very shy, and I took a little bit to declare my love to him.

After so many years spent together he still was very deeply in love with me and he was used to repeat to me that he would have married me thousand and thousand time again.

He also use to say to me and to everybody: remember Gabriella, the love I feel for you, it happened just once in a lifetime, and this is why, in spite of my illness, I feel I have been a lucky man.

Now ... I'm heartbroken, I feel empty, I feel terrible. I miss him. I must think that he is still alive, and near to me, to feel some relief ...

All three of my children and my four little grandchildren are close to me and with their help I must try to go on ...

    Love to you all,

    Gabriella

SOME OF THE ANSWERS FROM MY FRIENDS ALL OVER THE WORLD

Dear Gabriella and all my friends,

I have been thinking a great deal about your letter.

It seemed to me that you wrote a great love letter

to your beloved husband. When I face sunny day

or terrible day at my rest of life, I will try to think of your today's letter.

Thank you very much indeed for your writing to us.

    Your ever, Kako

    Dear Gabriella,

First of all, I feel very sorry for your loss of Gianfranco. I have been thinking of you for a long time after the sad news. I can't find what words comfort you even in Japanese. Especially when I read your letter about the heartfelt relationship between you and your husband, my tears came out. A Beautiful Love Story! I wish you live with your happy and beautiful memories with him for good. Please take care of your good health and be strong for your children and your grand children.

    Lots of love, Junko

    Dear Gabriella,

I've been thinking of you, but I just didn't know how to comfort you like Junko.

I really understand from your e-mail how much you suffer from the loss of your beloved husband. So I've been praying for you to get over it.

I do hope your sorrow will decrease day by day even though it' s very very hard.

People say time is the best medicine. And please remember the love from all over the world.

    Kanae

    Dear Gabriella,

As all other ladies from round the world we hold our hands together in a circle and give you the strength to overcome the sorrow. Your letter is a real diamond to your love. Thanks for sharing. Our Friendship is forever. A very big hug, Ursula and Adi

    My dear Gabriella,

I'm so sorry that I am too far to be with you at this difficult time. But believe me my heart and thought are alway with you.

Cheer up my friend, I know you can ...

Such a beautiful and sweet friend of mind. From time to time I always flip you photo, imagine of our time in Mrs Cox's class room.

Write to me when you have time. Let me know if you've gone through the hardship.

I want to see your beautiful smill again.

Big hug and kisses, your Friend Meiliana and Family

    Book Reviews

A God in Ruins Kate Atkinson

Reviewed & written by Kate Icke

In Life After Life Ursula Todd lived through the turbulent events of the last century again and again. In A God in Ruins, Atkinson turns her focus on Ursulas beloved younger brother Teddy would-be poet, RAF bomber pilot, husband and father as he navigates the perils and progress of the 20th century. For all Teddy endures in battle, his greatest challenge will be to face living in a future he never expected to have.

This is a novel about war and the shadow it casts even over generations who have never known it, but it is also a novel about fiction. Though it may appear to lack the bold formal conceit that made Life After Life so original, dont make the mistake of thinking that Atkinson has abandoned her interest in authorial playfulness. The book ends with a breathtaking volte-face which will infuriate some readers and delight others, forcing us to reconsider how we understand fiction and the uses of the imagination. I think that you can only be so mulishly fictive if you genuinely care about what you are writing, she writes in a postscript, and there is no doubt that this is a novel that cares deeply about its characters and about the purpose of fiction in making sense of our collective past.

A God in Ruins, together with its predecessor, is Atkinsons finest work, and confirmation that her genre-defying writing continues to surprise and dazzle.

The Hare with Amber Eyes - A Hidden Inheritance by Edmund de Waal

Have you ever read a book that you didn't want to finish, because it was so good you were afraid that, when you got to the end, you would feel a little bereft? Well I had that feeling reading this book - in fact it took me 10 days to read, as I was savouring every chapter. It tells the story of the Ephrussi family, from their origins in Odessa through the family's moves to Paris and Vienna and Tokyo, against the dramatic backdrop of the end of 19th century and the first and second world wars. The fil rouge is a collection of carved ivory and wood Japanese miniature figures (netsuke) which passes from the rich ancestors right down to Edmund, a contemporary ceramicist in England. The family's history is traced by Edmund but is written almost as a novel, recounting the stories of his ancestors and describing in vivid detail their lives as a rich Jewish family in France and Austria - I found the part regarding the social standing and subsequent fate of the Jews in these two countries in the first half of the 20th century particularly interesting. Definitely a book to be read at leisure, if you are interested in art and history.

A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal - Ben Macintyre

Reviewed & written by Elisabetta Buscemi

here's my review of Macintyre's biography A Spy among Friends, on Kim Philby's affair.

I loved the book and enjoyed the atmosphere a lot.

As you all know Philby was the most famous double agent in the history of British intelligence. He started betraying every secret of Allied operations since his university years, when he embraced the Soviet political belief and never repented, never doubted, thus sending hundreds to their death.

But the book is also about the parallel stories of his two closest friends who believed they knew Philby better than anyone and discovered they had never really known their friend's complete entity.

In particular Elliott, who must certainly have felt so painfully betrayed, as he had helped the Philby family so much during the period of Philby's inquisition, before he was cleared up.

And yet, from Macintyre's pages, you feel the depth of this lifelong friendship, you can almost imagine yourself subdued by Philby's charm, his greatest gift that fooled so many.

You can't possibly side for this double agent and traitor of his country, his being untroubled by his action's consequences yet his story is larger than life.

But more than all that, I felt so involved in the story that I found myself uttering more than once: "how can he (Macintyre) make up such gripping stories!".

Because that's it: if you were not aware that the book is factual, you would assume that this astonishing account were pure fiction!

The writer 's information comes from newly released M15 files, so it's detailed and precise, but it's the way he puts this material into his pages that makes the real difference. No one writes about deceit so dramatically and perceptively, his capacity to go deep into these friendships makes this a thrilling and extraordinary book, and it's the small human details that make the story so intoxicating.

Although I believe the biography centers more on Kilby's friendships than on his actual actions, it probably is the definitive biography of the greatest spy of English post-war period.

I'm not particularly keen on spy novels, Le Carr, Grisham and friends, yet I advise you all to read it: fascinating, engaging, you'll love it!

Summer Article & Things to Do

  • June 2015 monza news 16

    Summer Article

    Summer by Rachael Martin

Summer, that six-letter word that conjures up visions

of beaches, lazy sunny days and warm evening strolls

along the seafront after a relaxing and ever-so-civilised

candle-lit dinner. For some. Summer, that six-letter word

that provokes... Think of this frazzled face with hair on

end and the caption reads What am I going to do with

them for fourteen weeks??? Yes, we're not even into

summer officially yet and school's out on the 5th of June.

Today I was at the park on the hill and we were talking

about the proposed reforms for school holidays. Shorter

summer holiday, no homework and more holidays

throughout the year. So that'll be the Northern European

model, then. But we what will do? some of the mothers

were saying. How will we manage when we're working?

Point taken, and a very good one too. Although I have to

admit there's something special about having this long

stretch of time in front of you. So long as you don't

mention the homework. 120 pages each.

Last summer we went to Spain for two months. The

builders were moving in to do work on the outside of

our house, and so it just made sense. You can't play out

on a building site, and I developed this highly-detailed

paranoia about the scaffolding which was to be all

around the house and outside the boys' window, and

conjured up visions of them walking out on to the

scaffolding which is pretty terrifying when you're living

on the second floor. We came home in the middle of

August and the scaffolding wasn't even up. It eventually

went up when the kids went back to school.

So this year I want to stay home a bit more. Yes, we'll

go to Spain for a while and we'll go to grandad's in

England, and they'll go to the Oratorio this year for the

first time this year, three days a week for a whole six

weeks. But my boys are growing fast and I'm wanting to

make memories at home too, lazing about (that's me) in

the park and wandering through the fields down to the

brook looking for heffalumps. I secretly hope we'll still be

looking for heffalumps and they won't turn round and

laugh at me. I want to go the Parco del Currone and

walk along the terraces and look down on to Galbusera

Bianca and Galbusera Nera, eat our sandwiches at Ca'

Soldato and trek upwards to Montevecchia. I want to ride

through the fields on our bikes and watch my kids

charging off in front of me, and fix it all in my memory

surrounded by the mountains and the smallholdings and

the strawberries that are growing in the allotment just as

you get to the little bridge. Me and my younger son

went down there on our bikes yesterday. The trees seem

to have grown tremendously since the last time we went

there and we had to lean down under the trees and

watch our legs for nettle stings.

And everywhere we go we'll be accumulating sticks.

Sticks and stones. We brought some amazing stones

back from the park on the hill today. Big ones, and

they'd painted them green with grass. Mum, we've dyed

them green! Look! I didn't see them do it as they were

just over the edge of the hill making their secret den, all

marked out with sticks. Maybe it's like that when you live

in a village, you can give them that bit more freedom

although I admit I'm lucky as I can always hear them.

They came back gloriously muddy and then it was time

to go home via a trip to the supermarket complete with

a friend where their behaviour was far from desirable and

they continued to lean on the glass counter at the

delicatessen. Three wild boys covered in mud and dirt on

bare legs and bare arms and all over their faces, and the

woman on the right looked on disapprovingly.

When my boys were young I used to have this thing

about a childhood from the Hundred Acre Wood (the

wood where Winnie the Pooh lives, and Piglet and Eeyore

and the Heffalumps and all.) When they were little,

summers were made of paddling pools and merenda at

the little red Ikea table and chairs and playing tea parties

and shops and trains out in the garden with the

neighbour's daughter who's two years older. She used to

be the mum and my older son was the dad and used to

leave the garage and go off to work on his bike. Things

have changed now and it's a lot more rowdy and

boisterous and they'll happily ignore the neighbour's

daughter. Well, she's a girl, isn't she? And despite some

of the little girls being rather precocious and wanting to

sit next to my sons at lunch, my older one pulls a face

and I'm sitting here typing with a felt purse my younger

one has placed round my neck, because you're my

    amore.

It's like that with boys. One minute they're all

over you showering you with love, and then there are

the days when it all goes pear-shaped and I'm hurrying

them out of the door, throwing their shoes behind them

yelling Just go out and play! as they've started diving

on the sofa and a bomb is exploding in my living room.

Yet today was one of those days when it felt like

Swallows and Amazons and the Hundred Acre Wood all

rolled into one. Roll on summer.

    Recommendation*:

Listen to the recording (in Italian) and wait for an opera-tor on the line.

If you dont speak Italian, ask for someone who speaks English.

Provide all of your personal information: name, address, telephone number and the description of your illness. Ask if there is a doctor who speaks English or your lan-guage.

They will have a doctor call you back in the next hour (usually faster). The doctor will tell you, if they need to make a house visit or if you should to go to the nearest GUARDIA MEDICA. They will give you the address of the closest one to your location.

Visits usually free of charge. House visits may be differ-ent.
