Welcome to the 8th Annual Kick Off Classic Sale!

It is once again Kaye and my pleasure to be managing this sale and kick off the 2015 fall sale season. I think we all agree the last few years have been a great time to be in the cattle business, especially the Red Angus business. As we travel the country from North to South and East to West we have been noticing more and more red hided cattle. In some cases we are seeing red cattle in places that were strictly black hided not so very long ago. There are several reasons for this, one being that the cattle are very “user friendly”. They adapt well to nearly all climates hot or cold, they have excellent dispositions and the product that they produce is exactly what the consumer is demanding. While the breed has long been known for its calving ease and maternal traits, many are discovering the efficiency and carcass traits the Red Angus breed has to offer. To make a long story short, the Red Angus breed may very well be the most problem free breed going. I truly feel the cattle offered in this sale are some of the best to be offered to the public. The breeders that make this sale happen every year are all very like-minded and conscientious in their breeding programs with the single goal of offering you some of their best genetics. Unlike many other consignment sales, this is an invitation only sale. This format was adapted 8 years ago by the core group of breeders that originated this event and remains to this day. I encourage you to examine this catalog carefully to find the genetics that will work best in your program. If you have specific questions about any of the listed lots, please feel free to call any of the breeders directly as no one knows their cattle better than they do. Also if you need an unbiased opinion of any of the lots listed please feel free to give me a call or any of the sales staff and we will be glad to assist you in any way that we can. If you are unable to attend the sale in person it will be broadcast live on DVAuction. If you need to leave an absentee bid with me please feel free to do so and rest assured that your bids will be held in the strictest of confidence as you have come to expect from us. I would suggest if you choose to leave an absentee bid with me, please do so at least an hour ahead of the listed start time. Kaye and I hope to see you in Bloomfield, Iowa and invite you to come and in-spect the cattle and enjoy the hospitality.

This young lady comes to us as a stipulation in a partnership between Kurt and Colten Curry. Colten purchased her dam as a sale highlight in a past Kick Off Classic and after a stellar show career, Kurt offered to buy half of her back. The stipulation is that all progeny will be offered for sale. Her sire is the much sought after Crimson Tide who was a Denver highlight himself and has gone on to be a tremendous herdsire, siring cattle with growth and power including the $17,500 Roll Tide that walks in the Lazy J Bar pastures.

This “Crimson Tide” daughter’s mother also made her appearance in a past K. O. C. sale. She is a daughter of Julian B571 and the Roberta cow from the Shepard Settlement Farms donor pen. Make no mistake about it, these Crimson Tide daughters are highly prized and the only reason she is here is because she falls slightly outside of the Rich calving program that is geared towards their annual bull sale. Time to capitalize on a great female!

This “Rachel” is sired by the past high seller from the Pieper bull sale, PIE 231 “Endeavor”. Her dam is a full sib to the flush mate bulls that simply caught the crowd on fire at the bull sale a couple of years ago by selling the brothers into several pure bred herds all around the U.S. and Canada as well. The Rich Red Angus family has brought us females from the top of the herd simply because they have fallen out of their chosen calving period. You have to admire them for sticking to their guns and letting these young females go based on that alone. Make plans now to gather up some great young females that they are sacrificing.

Abigail’s sire, Logistics, is one of the flush mate brothers that wowed the crowd a couple of years ago. He sold in Denver for $10,000 and has gone on to be a phenomenal breeding bull being the sire of the high selling sire group in the ‘15 Rich bull sale. Her dam is a product of an ET mating of Robin Hood 1174B and donor dam Abigail C1037. Check out the spread in her EPD’s, -2.3 to 108 and a 23 Milk! She is a culmination of some of the best and newest genetics with some of the most tried and true genetics in the breed. She sells here simply because she doesn’t calve in January or February.

Here is a genetic breeding piece that will garner a lot of attention! She is a full sib to Logistics as well as all of his flushmates that set the Red Angus crowd back in their seats. This mating may very well be the most successful mating with the phenomenal Rachel 746. Added to all of this is the fact that she is sharing grass with the equally phenomenal Crimson Tide this breeding season. It is our good fortune that she is not bred for a January or February calf or we would never get a shot at her here.

As I sit here and write these footnotes I am finding myself questioning Kurt’s wisdom of selling anything that is bred after a certain calving date. I absolutely loved this cow as a calf and tried my best to get her for another sale at the time. She is a full sister to the Absolute Power bull that was half of the pair of bulls that topped a past Denver sale with 1/2 interest in both selling for $22,500. Her sire needs no introduction and the Phyllis 47 cow was the back bone of the Rich ET program. Get yourself some genetic lead-time right here!

Melody is a product of stacking ET programs. Her sire was produced in the Shepard Settlement Farm ET program combining Chateau 744 with the great Cedar 922 that put the Shepard Settlement Farm on the “Red Angus” map. Her dam, Melody Prix was a donor for the Rich ET program as well and is now in the High Ridge Red Angus donor pen. She sells bred to Crimson Tide, expect the resulting calf to be powerful and easy to look at.

Lamoni was the bull that peaked my interest several years ago and even more importantly went on to be one of the most influential herdsires for the Rich program. 724B is a power packed young female that has both performance and phenotype. She is a daughter of Mulberry 26P and maternally she is out of a High Capacity 224 cow that also stacks Sam’s Prospector and the Duette cow family that has been ultra-successful for both the Pieper herd in Nebraska and the Solution Genetics program in Iowa. She is bred very similarly to the Batterson’s herd sire “Eclipse”. If you are searching for a heifer that has that “killer” look or a future donor female, make sure you circle this one in your catalog.

313B’s sire is quickly making his mark in the Batterson herd by siring excellent females and bulls as well. His sons were very well received in the Performance Plus bull sale last spring. Maternally 313B is backed by the 5L Director bull and the Blackcap cow family that brings an outcross to the pedigree. The EPD profile on this heifer is stellar to say the least with tremendous growth and maternal numbers that will make her a top pick in this offering. Don’t be surprised if she ends up in a donor pen in the near future with genetics and performance like this.

808B is from the Teanna cow family. The Teanna’s have put many sale toppers in the record books in sale all around the country. 808B’s sire is the Ramblin Jack bull that in my opinion may be one of the best Jackhammer sons ever born. The maternal grandsire is the Redmond bull from the Pieper program in Nebraska, where he was a top choice in their bull sale and has left many daughters in the Batterson herd as well as the Rocking R herd in Kansas. She is a dark red heifer that is very nicely structured and easy on the eyes. Get a Teanna while you still can.

A very interesting combination of calving ease and power represented here in both the pedigree and the heifer as well. Have you ever heard of a cow named DAMAR MIMI? This is a full sib to the great Mimi cow that Damar in WI is setting as the bench mark for all of their donors. Her sire is Mulberry 26P who needs no introduction and her dam is the cow that I often describe as the cow that does nothing wrong, Tarmily. We have sold several embryos that are full sibs to this heifer in the four digit per embryo range for the Damar program. Ennis tells me that Mimi is even better than her dam, get a full sister to Mimi if you can!

In our travels around the country we see many Epic daughters in some of the top herds in the North American continent. It is a testament to the bull and his progeny that so many breeders continue to use him year after year to further their programs. I believe that the combination of Epic and the Abigail cow will absolutely produce progeny that will excel in the new owners program as well. The Abigail cow sired by Lamoni will insure that these embryos will rise to the top of just about any program with performance and phenotype as well.

These embryos are full sibs to our high selling SFCC Amber 317A fe-male purchased by the Smith Family for a valuation of $15,000. Amber was a tank of a female. Super thick, massive boned, the kind to really raise herd bulls. These embryos are also full sibs to our calving ease Jr Herdsire we kept last year, SFCC Bruno 412B. If you ask Jesse Weber about his Ruby cow family, he can’t say enough good things about them and their fault free production record. Ruby has a beautiful udder and Amber does too. Did I mention that Ruby has settled on the first service every time and has an average of 25 eggs per flush. Now that is fertility. Whether you get a calving ease bull like Bruno or a beautiful female like Amber, you will be happy with this purchase.

The second embryo mating we are offering is out of the WEBR Ruby 1132 cow by the NWSS Champion Lazy MC Eye Spy 64Y. Not only did Eye Spy turn heads at Denver as a baby when he won the whole deal, but he has been backing it up with the performance of his calves at Lazy MC. His most notable accomplishment may be to sire the high selling WPRA Legacy bull that Lazy MC is using to headline the future of their program. Eye Spy has a great set of balanced EPD’s and also offers some of the best carcass numbers to come out of Canada. We have two Eye Spy bulls on the ground at home and are more than pleased with their progress out of completely different types of genetics. We think Eye Spy will work on a lot of cows, including Ruby. I screwed up and had to catch a plane after helping to fit Eye Spy at NWSS so missed getting in the backdrop photo. Don’t miss this chance and be kicking yourself down the road like I have been since catching that flight.

High Ridge Red Angus Ranch is certainly no stranger to the Kick Off Classic sale as they have participated from the seats for several years. This year we welcome them as consignors to this event. When Dwight asked me about putting this half-blood cow in the sale, my response was that the bull we sold in the Performance Plus Bull sale was very well received. With the addition of Chris Rich to their program, High Ridge has also adopted the policy of selling any cows that don’t fit in their calving window. Their sacrifice is your gain!

Sired by Samurai X22 and out of an EXT 5233 daughter that goes back to the Bonnebell cow family maternally as well. She is also a cow that falls victim to the shortened calving period at the High Ridge Ranch.
