DESCRIPTION

Based in Laguna Beach, the Laguna Beach Music Festival has historically been and continues to be a platform for the discovery of up-and-coming artists with its presentations of world-class musicians in intimate venues. The 2015 Festival, taking place February 12-15 at a variety of venues in Laguna Beach, will include mentors, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet as well as special appearances by friends of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, including the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet (LAPQ), Janelle DeStefano, Phil Proctor and L.A. Flamenco.

The Laguna Beach Music Festival is an annual multi-day celebration,

founded in 2002, and is presented in partnership with Laguna Beach Live!

and the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.

The festival is known for featuring critically acclaimed classical

artists along with the next generation of star performers.

Since 2009, the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet has forged a distinct identity as a world-class contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to commissioning and presenting new works for percussion quartets. LAPQ champions the important contributions of 20th century West Coast composers while collaborating with contemporaryartists to continue the tradition of innovation and exploration.

Phil ProctorAward-winning actor, singer, writer, producer and a co-founder of the Firesign Theatre, Proctor has had voice roles in ToyStory, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo. He has performed on and off‐Broadway and in theaters from Los Angeles,to Boston, Canada and the former Soviet Union.

Janelle DeStefanoAmerican mezzo-soprano Janelle DeStefano enjoys the entire gamut of classical singing, from opera, oratorio, and recital to chamber music. She has been featured in concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra;Jacaranda Music at the Edge, El Mundo; Bach Collegium San Diego; and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

l.a. FlamencoL.A. Flamenco is known for its passionate and exciting performing style. Working with L.A.’s premier dancers, choreographerWendy Castellanos brings the visceral art of flamenco to the Festival.

Jeffrey holmesJeffrey Holmes composes music inspired by the diversity of our natural world. His creative inspiration is often rooted in primitive myths, legends, and landscapes. Commissioned by LBMF to compose a new work for LAPQ and LAGQ, Holmeshas created a piece about the sea, motivated both by his Scandinavian heritage and the ocean.

LAGQ and LAPQ come together to perform unique arrangements for fourclassical guitars and four percussionists as well as the world premiere of Ymir by Jeffrey Holmes conducted by Brian Head. Other repertoire highlights include Steve Reich’s Six Marimbas, Steve Forman’s Bitcoinsand John Bergamo’s Piru Bol.

Boccherini’s Fandango, Bizet’s Carmen and Manuel de Falla’s hauntingSeven Songs sung by mezzo-soprano Janelle DeStefano exemplify thefire and passion of Andalucía, culminating in a grand finale performance of Falla’s complete ballet El Amor Brujo featuring the phenomenal L.A. Flamenco dance troupe.

The ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la manchaSun | Feb. 15 | 3:00 pm | laguna Playhouse

LAGQ and Firesign Theatre’s Phil Proctor come together to bring DonQuixote to life with images and lighting, accompanied by LAGQ’s brilliantarrangements of music from Spain’s Golden Age. The result is inspiredstorytelling in its most elevated form. Immediately following, a panel discussion and Q&A on “Don Quixote and the Art of Adaptation” will beheld onstage with Phil Proctor and LAGQ.
