Letter from the Minister

Dear All,I am going to begin this month with a verse fromIsaiah: “See, I am sending my messenger ahead ofyou, who will prepare your way.”

The Good News of the Gospel always begins with a messenger, whetheran angel whispering in Mary’s ear or a parent telling a child a story. TheGood News is always beginning somewhere in the world, for those withears to hear and hearts to go wherever the way may lead.

The Good News begins in this church every time we have a Baptism, every time we have a wedding; at every meeting of Messy Church, ateach and every Sunday Service the Good News is told and heard.

The Good News begins again every time we mention our church outside inthe community, when we tell someone of what happens in the church andthe difference it makes in the lives of those who hear the Good News.

We are a church of Good News, we are a church who looks to share thatGood News with others, and we are God’s church in this place.

God sends us out to be messengers, going ahead of the Good News withthe invitation to others to come and hear, come and be part of thewonderful Good News as we work to share God’s love with all. For themore people that hear the wonderful news of God’s love, the more wecan spread God’s love in our neighbourhood.

God isn’t asking us to give up our lives on the cross; God is asking us touse our lives to spread the wonder of His great love. And that we cando.

We can be messengers, we can be angels, and we can spread the GoodNews, because God’s Holy Spirit is with us always giving us courage andencouragement.

So smile, spread the Good News! In Jesus’ name.

In Memory of William Stewart Michie1939 - 2014

‘Dad'Dad was born in Edinburgh on the 4th September 1939, the day after war wasdeclared! As a child Dad attended James Gillespies Prep School beforemoving on to George Heriots School. As a young boy starting there he couldnot possibly have foreseen the impact the institution would have on his life. Itis safe to say my father was a Herioter to the core and was actively involvedin the school until the day he died. As a former pupil he was involved in OldBoys teams particularly rugby and latterly as President of the London HeriotClub in the Caledonian Club in Knightsbridge. His dedication to his schoolwas a vital part of who he was.

After school Dad went on to study Mechanical Engineering at the Heriot Wattand worked for many years at Brown Brothers before moving to WheywayWatson, the company that ultimately brought us to Beckenham. This period inhis life was busy in terms of career pathway and where we lived. Weaveraged a move every year or so for about 3 years until in 1980 we arrivedin Beckenham. Very early on in our arrival we visited Hayes Free Church aspart of a search for a new place of worship. After one visit Mum and Daddecided they need look no further, and so began Dads' commitment to thischurch. This was always a deep commitment about which Dad felt verystrongly.

Dads' rugby days might have been over but he pretty soon joined West KentGolf Club and juggled the stresses of working life with the relaxation andenjoyment of a round of golf. It provided a retreat from the intensity ofresponsibility from his business.

As Dad headed towards retirement age he wound down over a few years inanticipation of the excitement and complete change of pace thatretirement would bring. As a father who was often absent due to workKenneth , Susie and I did wonder what on earth he would do without a job. However we need not have feared for him, he took to retirement like a duckto water! His days were filled with plenty of golf, studying theology, preparingsermons and being a grandfather who was ever present for his grandchildren.'Papa' was more hands on than we had ever anticipated and seemedbesotted with his grandchildren. Mum and Dad indulged their wanderlustand spent their precious time traveling far and wide, and thank goodnessthey did. Wherever Dad went it seemed his watercourse were not far behind.

Dad touched very many people in his life in the various roles he had. This wasevident, no more so, than at his Memorial Service. We would like to thank allof those who attended and for the kindness and support we have felt in thelast few weeks.

Website of the month: -Following the recent announcement from First Milk to delay payments

to farmers , the Arthur Rank Centre is calling on churches to pray forand support dairy farmers.

“The number of dairy farmers hashalved over little more than adecade,” said Arthur RankCentre CEO Jerry Marshall.

“Prices are at their lowest since2007 while costs have risen 36%.On top of this, the recentannouncement by First Milk thatthey are delaying payments bytwo weeks, presents significantcash flow difficulties to theirsuppliers.“

“British Dairy farmers are facingan exceptionally difficult time so we are calling on churches to prayfor the industry, said Revd Elizabeth Clark, National Rural Officer forthe Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church. “Givethanks for the vital food that dairy farmers produce, pray for thosestruggling because of the present low prices and pray especially forthose farmers who sell their milk to First Milk whose pay chequeshave been delayed.”

“Churches can also support the industry by buying British dairyproducts,” said Canon Dr Jill Hopkinson, National Rural Officer for theChurch of England. “When buying milk, butter, cheese and yoghurtlook for the red tractor logo which tells you it is a British product.Church members could also show their support through choosing tobuy milk from supermarkets that pay a fair price to farmers.Visithttp://www.nfuonline.com/back-british-farming/news-channel/how-can-i-support-british-dairy-farmers/ to find out how.”

PrayerLoving God we give you thanks for all the food that is produced for us

by farmers every day. We thank you especially for milk, a vital food, which we don’t always fully appreciate. We pray for dairy farmersand the particular pressures that they face at this present time. Weremember farmers under pressure because of low prices and latemilk payments, may they know the peace of your presence. Maywe consumers never take our food for granted and may we valueand support those who work tirelessly to feed us. This we ask in Jesusname, Amen.

The Praying Hands---------------------

“The Praying Hands” was created as a result ofa remarkable relationship between two artists,Albecht Durer and his friend Franz Knigstein. As students they both worked as part—timelabourers to try to earn enough money tocarry on their studies. However in theeconomic climate of the time there was noway that either could both study and havetime to earn enough with casual part—timejobs to survive in this way. They decided todraw lots to decide which of them should findfull—time employment, and support them

both, while the winner would then devote all his energies to his studies.Albert Durer won, and agreed that when his studies were complete hewould return and finance his friend's studies.

However when Durer, having become a great success in his field, eventually came back to fulfil his promise, he discovered the sacrificethat Knigstein had made was far greater than either had foreseen.

Through hard labour Franz’s finger’s had become twisted and bent. They could no longer delicately control an artist’s brushes and hecould never hope to become a great painter. However Knigsteindisplayed no bitterness. He was glad to have played his part in hisfriend's success.

One day Durer found Franz at prayer and was so struck by his handsthat he sketched them and later completed one of the greatmasterpieces of the early Renaissance period that we now know as

“The Praying Hands”.It carries a story of love, faith, sacrifice and gratitude.

CollectGod our Father, who from the family of your servant David raised upJoseph the carpenter to be the guardian of your incarnate Son andhusband of the Blessed Virgin Mary: give us grace to follow him infaithful obedience to your commands; through Jesus Christ your Sonour Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The AnnunciationAnglicised from the Latin Vulgate Luke 1:26-39 Annuntiatio nativitatisChristi, also referred to as the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Annunciation of Our Lady or Annunciation of the Lord, is theChristian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel tothe Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother ofJesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation. Gabriel told Mary toname her son Jesus, meaning "Saviour". Many Christians observe thisevent with the Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March, nine fullmonths before Christmas, the ceremonial birthday of Jesus.Approximating the northern vernal equinox, the date of theAnnunciation also marked the New Year in many places, includingEngland, where it is called Lady Day. Both the Roman and OrthodoxCatholic Churches hold that the Annunciation took place atNazareth, but differ as to the precise location. The Basilica of theAnnunciation marks the site preferred by the former, while the GreekOrthodox Church of the Annunciation marks that preferred by thelatter.

Final Thought1) We are students of a Master who is

teaching day by day — a God whoseSon shows everyone the Truth, the Life, the Way. He speaks to each oneclearly - if we would be aware, withwords that help to build our lives andthose with whom we share.

2) When we find ourselves unsure of whatour purpose is in life it's God that givesit meaning and dispels our inwardstrife; in following His footstepsdiscernment can be found to help usmake decisions that will turn our livesaround.

3) Generosity we learn of and integrity aswell; the need to quit from lying andthe ways we would rebel; in quietcontemplation — Christ's love shownon the tree; compassion andcontentment comes — in mind to setus free!
