2015 Masterclass Embodiment/Disembodiment Masterclass with Chelsea Lehmann | 23 - 25 January 2015 Introductory talk | Friday 23 January 5.00pm - 7.00pm Studio | Saturday 24 January 9.30am - 4.30pm Studio | Sunday 25 January 9.30am - 4.30pm This masterclass explores ideas surrounding embodiment/disembodiment in terms of how the body is (re)presented and perceived, especially in relation to painting. ‘Embodiment’ can be interpreted as ‘inhabiting one’s body’ in that our awareness of space, time and movement is influenced by the physical dimensions and capacities of our bodies. Conversely, ‘disembodiment’ may refer to being ‘separated from, or existing without the body’ signifying the metaphysical dimension of the body (e.g. mind/spirit) or an idealised, virtual or immaterial ‘body’. Participants will create a series of ‘portraits’ (studies or more realised artworks), which explore embodiment and/or disembodiment in response to observational life painting from models. This course begins with a lecture that introduces the conceptual context for the development of ideas through drawing and painting. Please note this masterclass assumes a moderate level of experience and independent practice. Students must make their own choices about what materials to use, including supports, media and the scale and number of works they intend to undertake (see reverse for list of suggested materials). Cost $685 (GST inc). Please note the masterclass fee does not include the cost of materials. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. BYO lunch. Closing date for enrolment 9 January 2015. You can secure your place by returning the Application for Enrolment Form (see reverse) with a $100 non-refundable deposit. The remaining balance of $585 is then due by 16 January 2015. Chelsea Lehmann currently lives and works in Sydney. After completing her Bachelor of Visual Art (Hons) in 1998 at Adelaide Central School of Art she studied at Glasgow School of Art courtesy of the Ruth Tuck Scholarship Award. Chelsea completed her Masters of Fine Art in 2007 at UNSW Art & Design where she is currently a PhD candidate. In 2008 she was listed as one of Australia’s 50 most collectable artists (Australian Art Collector magazine). Her current research focuses on the aesthetic potential of scientific imaging processes associated with conservation with an aim to explore the materiality of the painted surface. Chelsea has taught painting and drawing at institutions including Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide Central School of Art, National Art School and UNSW Art & Design.

Materials Source images responding to the theme of embodiment/disembodiment to compliment painting the figure from life (images will be discussed after the introductory talk). Support: 1 x primed, stretched canvas/linen or board (suggested dimensions 80 x 60cm), however please consider scale and format as an important directive in your process – for instance, you may prefer to work on a series of smaller ‘studies’ with the potential to explore different formats, e.g. square, landscape or portrait. Optional additional colours: Raw Umber, Brilliant Yellow, Flake White or Zinc White, Permanent Rose, Violet (e.g. Cobalt, Dioxine Mauve, Permanent Mauve), Terre Verte, Viridian Green, Green-blue (e.g. Turquoise, Sapphire Blue, Manganese Blue, Cerulean Blue), Indian Yellow, King’s Blue. Mediums: To be of your choice. If using oils a fast drying medium like Liquin is recommended, (note – no turps allowed, only odourless solvent). Brushes: selection of 6 small to large flat and round bristle or synthetic brushes, 2 small imitation sable brushes (round and flat), 5cm flat bristle brush. Additional materials: Palette - flat, no wells, at least A4 size. Palette knife, rags, sketch book, pencil, eraser.

Your art materials can be purchased at competitive prices from Central Artist Supplies, in-house suppliers to Adelaide Central School of Art and situated on campus. Phone (08) 8271 6912 to discuss your requirements.
