NOTES FROM NANCY

Grace and peace, Nancy

You can tell that summer is approaching. Many of the programs are

taking a break (M&M’s, Disciple Class, regular Sunday School classes for

children, etc.). Things will move at a slower pace here at the church - BUT -

we are open for business ALL SUMMER! I will always be happy to see you

whenever you can make it during the next few months. And please don’t

forget that we still have to pay utility bills, building debt, and salaries, so

please keep remembering the church financially as you do the rest of the

year.

The first change coming up is the moving of our second Sunday wor-

ship service to 10:30 beginning on May 3. The decision to do this was made

by the Administrative Council and the pastor and staff are very grateful to

have that extra 15 minutes between services. Often I didn’t even make it to

the rest room before it was time to start the second service. And I never

have any time to talk even for a little while with people. This new time will be

so helpful. So please write this down somewhere so you don’t forget. May

3 - services at 9:00 and 10:30.

We will have children’s Sunday School for all ages in the summer

months as we did last year and will need two volunteers per Sunday to be

teachers. You will receive instructions and curriculum for the class so you

don’t have to prepare things - just look over the material we have for

you. There is a sign-up sheet on the window outside the church office where

you can volunteer.

Our annual Outdoor Service will be on August 2 - put that on the cal-

endar! And, of course, the Garage Sale August 12 - 15. Oh, and don’t forget

Vacation Bible School = June 21-25. You can see more information about all

these things and many more on our most excellent church web site.

That’s enough for now. Please make a note of all these dates in the

life of our church family. It will be a busy summer!

WORSHIP

MUSIC I can’t believe it. Really, I can’t believe that another school year is coming to a close. That means for our music changes to give our musicians a little break. Speaking of musicians, don’t we have some fabulous ones? Let’s talk about each of these groups for a minute. Chancel Choir – Now granted, these people are involved because they like to sing and make music in a choral setting. But it also requires quite a commitment. Every Wednesday night and early on Sunday mornings, our group gathers to practice and perform. Sometimes they sing at both worship services. Aren’t they a good looking group in their new purple robes that were so graciously purchased by Gayle Preston, honoring Ray and his love of our choir? Thanks Gayle, Alisa, Bob and Mary Beth for the love. Extra hours went into making the December Cantata fabulous, as well as the Easter special anthem. But these folks are always willing to put in the extra work and not only provide moving anthems but special music for offertories, preludes, sermons…well, you get the idea. So when you see one of the following people. Please thank them. Derek Bergman Howard Bergman Paul Dritley Lynn Ferdig Bryan Fraser Jared Rodman Brett Heckens Janet Holt Meri Hoover Emily Hughes Carol Muir Rich Pearson Scott Avery Emily Gale Sandy Lozier Pam Ferdig Kim Jirgenson Nicole Peterson Jordyn Ritnour Priscilla Wilson Carol Campbell Marlana Walla Michel Hume Gail Graeve Pete Kaufman Brett Ritter Our very energetic and talented director, Tyler Hughes needs a big thank you as well. Tyler took on this very big job as well as his first full time teaching job. Can you imagine working with middle school choir all day and then coming to lead our adult choirs, which one would argue is very similar? Just joking. Tyler has a tremendous talent and shares it with all of us every Sunday. Then there is our adorable Children’s Choir led by the very smiley Heather McBeth. Who wouldn’t want to be around such a positive role model as Heather? She gets the most music possible out of those wiggly, energetic little ones. The first Sunday of each month I look forward to their shining faces and hearing their voices rise in praise. May 3 will be their last performance until August so be sure and give Heather a pat on the back also. Please don’t hesitate to send your little ones to Heather during the first service in the fall. Even if you can’t be here each Sunday, this is a great way for our little ones to learn traditional and contempo-rary songs. And have you heard our Youth Praise Band? Amazing, simply amazing! Brett Heckens has taken on this leadership role for this group so give him big thanks also. Some of them cross over into our regular Praise Band. Karissa took on the role of accompanist when we desperately needed her. How many teenagers do you know that would take on such a big commitment with no pay? Which brings me to her side kick Jordyn, another teenager willingly giving of her time and talents to Elkhorn Hills? While the Chancel Choir takes the summer off, there is no such luxury for our praise team. Here are the folks you should be giving thanks for every Sunday. Karissa Heckens Jordyn Ritnour Kaleb Heckens Lindsey Roberg Elly Beeson Bailey Klanderud Haydn Muir Jason Meyer Carol Campbell Nicole Peterson Janet Holt Jared Rodman Brett Heckens Tyler Hughes I’ve had the joy of working with another music ministry that brings me great joy. The Heavenly Bells are a seasonal group that laughs as much as they play. They are so much fun to work with and play at Christmas and Easter. But watch for future practice times. They’ve informed that they’d like to play more. Yahoo!!!!! Thanks to these great ringers. BIG THANK YOU TO DR. FINK! The preschool children and staff would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Dr. Fink for coming and speaking to the children during our “V” week activi-ties. The children loved learning about what a Veterinarian does!

MISSION OF THE MONTH: YEAR-ROUND COLLECTIONS

Recycled Card Program: St. Jude's Ranch for Children recycles used greeting cards and creates new holiday and all-occasion greeting cards. The profits St. Jude's gets from this program supports services for abused, neglected, and home-less children, young adults, and families. There are two great ways that you can support this program: 1. Donate your gently used greeting cards. Simply bring in greeting cards you've received and are no longer using to church with you. 2. Purchase refurbished greeting cards from St. Jude's. Visit stjudesranch.org and under the "About Us" tab click "Recycled Card Program." Box Tops and Labels for Education: Epworth Village pro-vides support to children dealing with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. They provide group homes, foster care services, outpatient therapy, and educational assistance. You can help support Epworth Village by collecting Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education found on the various products you buy every day! Box Tops for Education do expire but if collected in time are worth 10 cents each, paid directly to Epworth Village. Labels for Education do no expire and work on a point system. The more points Ep-woth Village has, the more items they can purchase. Greeting Cards, Box Tops, and Label for Education can be dropped off in the brown cabinet located in the church entry way

LLB (Ladies Lunch Bunch) 1st lunch-eon at Panera’s was great. Carolyn Seaman brought a collection of the Dionn quintuplets pictures and shared a story on how she ac-quired them. Next month bring your show-and-tell item & share with the LLB. All ladies are welcome. Location & date TBD

Traditions: Vacation Bible SchoolTraditions: Vacation Bible SchoolTraditions: Vacation Bible SchoolTraditions: Vacation Bible School Members of Elkhorn Hills United Methodist Church are familiar with the week-long activities offered every summer

at VBS. Songs, games, and crafts are all centered around a spiritual theme that encourages children to learn more

about the Bible in a fun, friendly and safe environment. The mission of the Methodist Church is to make disciples of

Jesus Christ. As Methodists we accomplish this through outreach to our community and VBS is one of the most impor-

tant outreach ministries for Elkhorn Hills.

In 2013, Barna Research found that nearly half of all Americans who accept Jesus Christ as their savior do so before

reaching the age of 13 (43%).* Despite the importance of VBS in shaping our future leaders spiritual beliefs, the num-

ber of VBS programs offered are on the decline. Barna Research also found that the number of churches offering VBS

programs have dipped since reaching a peak in 1997 when 80% of all churches nationally offered VBS. * In 2012 only

66% of churches nationally offered VBS programs.* What is causing the decline? Increasing financial costs and a

lack of volunteers.

This year, we have had members of EHUMC step up and remove the first barrier of financial costs from our VBS pro-

gram. Children will be able to attend a free summer session of VBS. We are grateful for the financial commitment our

members have shown to continuing this program free-of-charge.

The second issue of the number of volunteers, however, still remains. It is easy to recognize that families and church

members are crushed for time. Organizing and attending prayer groups, Bible studies, youth mission trips, and an an-

nual garage sale are all occurring during the same busy summer months when VBS activities reach their peak. How-

ever, we want to encourage you to prayerfully consider what time and talent you can offer this program. If you don’t

think you have any talents to offer, that’s okay. All we ask is that you have is an open heart and empty hands.

For more information on how you can help with Vacation Bible School this year, please contact Ashley Bossert at

(402) 289-4764 or [email protected].

What’s New for YouWhat’s New for YouWhat’s New for YouWhat’s New for You Every time that I look at Elkhorn Hills’ website, I get excited at all the work the website team has done to provide a sin-gle location where all the activities that are happening at our church can be found. Tom Beeson’s video of the Easter Sunrise Service is available for viewing. It can also be seen on EHUMC’s Facebook site and our very own YouTube chan-nel. Thank you, Tom, for your contribution! We are looking for members that would be interested in providing short summaries or videos of EHUMC activities that they have attended. There are so many events that it is hard for the MCO team to capture it all. If you would like to contribute an item or need to touch-base with one of our members, the MCO team has a new email address: [email protected].

Everything keeps changing, and that’s a fact! Even us. Each of us is changing a little every day. I guess I’ve always thought… “Change? Me? Why mess with this. But if you doubt the idea of change, just look at the photo of yourself 20 or 30 years ago. Then go stand in front of a mirror. Or think of some of your ideas about life when you were a teenager and now. I guess it’s up to each of us to be aware of how we, and the times, are changing and when we look back to right now from 20 years in the future, we’ll make us proud.
