2015 NAPAT Membership Drive By now you should have received a reminder from Membership Chair Joyce Cavarozzi that it is time to renew your NAPAT membership for 2015. OR if you are not a current member please consider joining us in the good works of the National Partners. Growing out of an ad- hoc group of KCACTF alumni who presented a small cash award for Classical Acting at the Irene Ryan Evening, NAPAT now offers three National Awards – Classical Acting, Design Excellence, and Playwriting Excellence – which total approximately $7500 annually and which are further supplemented by our partners The Shaw Festival, and the Korean National University of the Arts, and until 2015 the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In addition NAPAT presents a $250 Classical Acting Award at each Regional Festival. Since our incorporation in 2003 NAPAT has awarded more than $50,000 in National and Regional Scholarships. A Message From The Napat Chair

The National Partners Need Your Help

Dear Partners and Colleagues,

As most of you know the only funds NAPAT has to support the scholarships out-lined in the accompanying article are derived from our annual membership dues and a few generous donations from individuals. Unfor-tunately our membership numbers are declin-ing and we are perilously close to not having sufficient funds to continue our programs in the future. It is vitally important that cur-rent partners renew their membership and lapsed partners rejoin us in the good work of supporting the next generation of theatre artists. In addition please consider encourag-ing your friends and colleagues to join with us as well. NAPAT is incorporated as a non-profit organization and all dues and donations are fully tax deductible. All of these monies go toward supporting our scholarships. The annual Conference in Washington, D.C. is self-supporting through registrations, and all Board activities and meetings are paid for by the individual members of the Board. Again, your memberships are the life-blood of this organization. Please join us and encourage others to do the same. Jere Wade, NAPAT CHAIR

Important Notice For 2014 Full Partners

In addition to the general reminder, 2014 Full Partners should have re-ceived a special notice concerning a special perk aimed at increasing NAPAT membership.

2015 Playwriting Excellence WinnerTo Receive O’Neill Playwright’s Residency

In the summer of 2015 the winner of this season’s NAPAT Playwriting Excellence Award will receive an expense paid residency at the O’Neill Playwright’s Conference in Waterford, Connecticut. The winner will join other KCACTF playwrights for the Writer’s Open Forum – a recurring workshop where the visiting playwrights work in collaboration to read and respond to selections of each other’s writing. In addition there will be opportunities to attend and observe NPC Rehearsals and Performances: observe the O’Neill’s pioneering process of developing new plays through a rehearsal process of several days and two script-in-hand public readings. Attend a Dream Design Meeting: in which the playwright speaks with NPC’s resident designers (sets, lights, costumes, and sound) to explore the sensory world of the play. Unconstrained by the limits of reality, the meeting gives the writer an opportunity to articulate and expand the ultimate vision. And engage in Professional Development: Meeting with Playwrights/Dramaturgs/Literary Managers/ Directors on campus. This is focused on being introduced to theaters and theater artists looking for new work. And also taking time to focus on the mechanics of applying for productions, workshops and awards.

For the past five years the recipient of the NAPAT Playwriting Award has been in residence at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas taught by Professor Sean Clark. Professor Clark has decided to discontinue the workshop. However, thanks to the Kennedy Center’s strong partnership with the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the 2015 winner will be invited to the Playwrights Conference described above

Playwriting Award Sponsor Needed

With the loss of co-sponsorship by UNLV, NAPAT will find it difficult to sustain this award in the future. We enjoy co-sponsorship of the Classical Acting Award with our partner the Shaw Festival in Canada. Similarly we have an excellent co-sponsor in the Korean National University of the Arts for the Design Excellence Award. We need something like this to continue the playwriting award. If any of our Partners and friends are interested in becoming a sponsor, or have suggestions along these lines please be in touch with NAPAT Chair Jere Wade: [email protected]

2014 Design Excellence Winner Reports On KNUA Experience

Dear NAPAT,Thank you so much for choosing me as the student to send to KNUA in Seoul this year. I had such an amazing time on the trip and will never forget the experience. The students at KNUA are so talented and the work they produce is so beautiful. I learned so much from them while sitting in on their portfolio class and hanging out with them in the city. They design in such a different way, but at the same time there were definite similarities that I could connect with and use in my own work. I will never forget the students I met and the new friends I made because of this trip. I have already connected with some of them over Facebook and I know we will stay in contact for a long time. I also had a really great time looking at the city and seeing everything Seoul had to offer. The Palaces were just amazing and I took so many photos of the architecture. I couldn’t get enough of all of the traditional painting and woodwork. Once again, thank you for everything and I hope that you continue to send students on this trip. It is eye opening, educational, and really helped to open my eyes to a whole new world of design, culture, and friends. - Ethan Hartman

A Report On KNUA From Lin ConawayNapat’s Design Excellence Coordinator

This year Ethan Hartman participated in classes, portfolio exchange, and discussions of approach, resources, presentation goals and much, much more. Former KNUA presenter at the festival in Washington D.C., Hunzoe Zung, was also a part of the portfolio exchange. In addition to comparing very different theatrical processes with KNUA’s exceptional students, this award introduces the winner to a culture outside of their own. This year, Ethan’s experience included Gilsangsa Temple, Gyeongbeokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Biwon Garden. An especially beautiful inclusion was the Chrysanthemum Festival decorations after dark at Chogyesa Temple. Other experiences included Dong-daemun Design Complex and fabric market, Insadong traditional district, and Jongmyo ancestral shrine. One of the highlights of this experience was the beautiful and thought provoking production of Woycek, directed by Jeong Chang-won, at the LG Arts Center. The morning following the production, we joined Prof Ko (also the production’s lighting designer) and her students for a detailed tour of the beautiful facilities. - Lin Conaway

The 2014 winner of NAPAT’s Excellence in Classical Acting award was Emily Nash, an MFA Per-formance candidate from the University of Idaho. Emily’s award included an expense-paid summer residency at the Shaw Festival in Canada’s Ontario-On-the-Lake. Unfortunately her report on the Shaw Festival ex-perience has not arrived in time

for this publication. We expect to include it in the next Newsletter

NAPAT Board Meeting

The NAPAT Board held its fall meetings in San Diego, California on October 10 -12, 2014. Nine Board members were in attendance. Ginny Quinley was elected Board Secretary. Following Officer Reports (minutes available at NAPAT.net) most of the business session was devoted to strategies for increasing NAPAT membership and making plans for the 2015 annual conference in Wash-ington, D.C. The Washington Conference will be held April 16 – 18 and once again the Conference hotel will be The River Inn in Foggy Bottom. In addition to the reception for Partners and the KCACTF National Committee and the annual Honoree Brunch, the Board is looking into a special D.C. event similar to the area theatre tours we have enjoyed in recent years. Detailed registration and hotel information will be sent soon after the first of the year.

A Theatre Opportunity In San Jose, CA

After 34 years of operations, the San Jose Repertory Theatre (Rep) in San Jose California filed bankruptcy on June 13, 2014. The city is left with an excellent theatre (the Hammer Theatre) and a sincere desire to maintain the theatre as a facility for the performing arts. San Jose is seeking potential tenants which will stress affordability to support emerging and community-based groups. There is hope that future programming would reflect the uniqueness of San Jose, including experimental work, and the diversity in the community. A public process is being conducted to identify a permanent operat-ing model for the Hammer Theatre Center. The City of San Jose has formed a Hammer Theatre Advisory Committee (HTAC) that will advise staff and inform a recommendation to the City Council. The advisory group is comprised of 10 individuals with expertise in performing arts, entertainment and facility manage-ment who are committing their time and skills for this effort. The HTAC will meet monthly to consider information about the theater and the local market and to provide advice on the goals and criteria associated with potential permanent operating models. Kerry Adams-Hapner, Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of San Jose is the principal contact. If there is interest he may be contacted at [email protected] In addition former KCACTF Region VIII Chair George Forrester will be attending the meetings and may be contacted at [email protected] for further information.
