Nestled between the cliffs of the escarpment and the shores of Lake Ontario in the heart of Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe, Burlington is close to the urban buzz of Toronto, yet surrounded by the tranquil beauty of parks and gardens. Our city offers visitors a full spectrum of activities, from scaling the heights of the Niagara escarpment to catching trophy sized salmon in a great lake. There’s culture, history, fantastic festivals and fun all year round in this safe and friendly community.

Visitors come from around the world to see the world’s largest collection of spectacular lilacs, the magnificent rose gardens and the masses of tulips, peonies and irises in the spring. In summer months, there is an international sculpture collection in the gardens along with special events, plant sales, nature walks, gardening and painting workshops. The popular Holiday Traditions exhibit with its unique model trains is a must do seasonal activity- a great multi-generational outing which will create new family memories. In the winter an interactive exhibit features fun learning activities for all ages focused on fascinating creatures and nature. The shop in the garden’s centre is the ideal place to find special one-of-a-kind gifts. New this year is the redesigned Rock Garden and visitor centre.

Visitors often comment that our waterfront is so beautiful, open and easy to explore. Located in the heart of downtown and just steps from the Visitor Centre Spencer Smith Park connects via a 4 km path with our lovely beach and the Burlington lift bridge. This is an easy 45 minute walk (one way) most of which is along the shore where you can see waterfowl, watch freighters come through the canal and enjoy views of the Burlington skyline. Plan to dine at one of the lakeside restaurants or downtown patios. Check out our website blog for more stories on our walkable waterfront.

When we are on the road and someone asks where Walk Off The Earth is from, like most Burlingtonians, I’m tempted to say Toronto. But I don’t. I’m too proud of where I’m from and always answer ‘Burlington’ instead. But it’s not as though I am hanging on a distinction without a difference. I remember noticing back in high school, playing in bands, that Burlington was at the center its own music scene—we had our own musicians, our own venues, our own haunts, and most coolly, our own sound. Bands like The Spoons and Finger Eleven were at the leading edge of this, and perhaps WOTE holds that candle now—I am not the one to say. This town is packed with great musicians and artists of all stripes, both aspiring and accomplished. And then there is Sound of Music Festival—what a phenomenal, completely made-in-Burlington, world-class event. So while there is a lot to like about Burlington—just look around—what I love about Burlington is this slightly submerged, but always burbling creative vitality that I am alluding to. It’s this verve, this mojo, that besides making Burlington a great place to enjoy the arts, I think, earns Burlington its own star on the musical map.

Mike Taylorby T.J Champagne

Mike Taylor (Beard Guy), Walk Off The earthAn eclectic mix of folk-pop, sketch group and quirky musical experimenter, Burlington’s Walk Off The Earth is an unconventional, multi-talented musical phenomena that is currently taking the world by storm. Their debut album, R.E.V.O., is certified gold in Canada and includes the two-time platinum single Red Hands.
