PAC-12 BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE // March 17, 2015 2

PAC-12 COACHES PICK UCLA AS 2015 FAVORITE

SAN FRANCISCO - In a polling of the Pac-12’s baseball coaches, UCLA has been selected as the pre-season favorite to win the Conference title this season. The Bruins received six of 10 possible first-place votes and 96 points. UCLA, which missed the postseason last year, advanced to the College World Series in 2013 and won the National Championship. This season UCLA returns 19 players who were members of the 2013 National Championship team, including six starting position players and all four starting pitchers from last season. On the mound, UCLA will be led by pre-season All-Americans David Berg and James Kaprielian.

OREGON, a Conference runner-up in two of the last three seasons, came in second with 86 points and received two first-place votes. Arizona State, led by new head coach Tracy Smith, who earned National Coach of the Year honors with Indiana in 2013, finished in third-place in the poll with 82 points and two first-place votes. STANFORD, a team that advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals last year, also earned one first-place vote and finished with 77 points.

USC finished sixth in the polling, picking up 48 points, and ARIZONA’s 44 points were good for seventh. CALIFORNIA collected 40 points to nab the eighth spot in the poll, while WASHINGTON came in ninth with 37 points. WASHINGTON STATE, which picked up 26 points, was tabbed to finish 10th followed by Utah at the 11 spot with 13 points.

All 11 teams will be in action on Friday, Feb. 13 as the 2015 season begins. This year, Pac-12 Networks is set to air 109 games.

The following are the results of the preseason coaches’ poll. Ten points are awarded for a first-place vote, nine points for a second-place vote and so on. First-place votes are in parentheses. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams.

California’s Paul Named Player of the WeekUSC’s Hart Selected Pitcher of the Week

CALIFORNIA first baseman Chris Paul has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and USC right-handed pitcher Mitch Hart has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, the Conference office announced Monday. Paul, a senior from Aliso Viejo, Calif., led the Golden Bears to victories in three of four games last week including two wins over No. 8 Oregon to open Pac-12 play. Paul was 6-for-10 with four runs, two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Paul opened the week going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer to push Cal to a 13-6 victory over Pacific. In game one against Oregon he was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI and he followed the performance up by going 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the series’ second game. Paul went 0-for-1 in game three and walked three times. Paul is leading the Golden Bears with a .431 average with a team-high six doubles, a triple and a team-best four home runs and 17 RBI.

Hart, a freshman from Granite Bay, Calif., threw a gem in just his fourth collegiate start, throwing a complete-game, two-hit shutout in USC’s 11-0 victory over Washington State. Hart had a no-hitter going through the first 5.1 innings, and did not allow a second hit until there were two down in the top of the ninth inning. The last time a Trojan threw a two-hitter was in 2009 when Anthony Vasquez threw one against Cal Poly. Hart also struck out five in the win, and walked just one.

Around the Pac-12...

-Arizona dropped its series with Utah, despite outhitting the Utes, making it the first time since 2012 that the Wildcats have not won their opening Conference series. Zach Gibbons and Kevin Newman both ride hitting streaks of 10 and nine games, respectively.

-ASU ranks 10th in total attendance and is one of only 10 schools in the nation, in-cluding the only school west of Texas, to draw more than 50,000 fans through the first five weeks of the season.

-California catapulted its way into the polls and is now ranked No. 24 by Collegiate Baseball. First baseman Chris Paul was named Pac-12 player of the week after going 6-for-10 with six RBI, and two home runs last week.

-The Ducks went on their first losing skid of the season last week dropping four-straight games, falling to San Francisco twice and California twice. They finished the week off with a 4-2 win over California.

-Jeff Hendrix has hit safely in 18-of-20 games for the Beavers this season and is hit-ting .370 with six doubles and four home runs.

-Stanford, which was off for finals last week, has won more games against top-25 competition than any team in the NCAA, according to Baseball America’s poll

-UCLA went on its first losing streak of the season falling to No. 1 TCU, No. 7 Vander-bilt and No. 6 USC.

-USC freshman Mitch Hart earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors after he threw a gem in just his fourth collegiate start, pitching a complete-game, two-hit shutout in USC’s 11-0 victory over Washington State. -Utah followed up a week where it won its first series of the year over Kansas, by winning another by taking 2-of-3 from Arizona. In game three of the series the Utes rallied from a 7-0 deficit, scoring nine runs in the final two innings to defeat Arizona.
