PARENT PROFILE
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE BENEFIT YOU BELIEVE YOUR DAUGHTER HAS GAINED FROM HER SORORITY EXPERIENCE?
From the rst day of her freshman year, my daughter has had an immediate community and sense of belonging because of the
association with her new sorority. This helped make her transition to college life easier and less intimidating not to mention funand exciting due to the numerous organized activities! It was comforting for her to be part of a group from the start and know thatshe had 70+ girls in her pledge class to make new friends. From there, it only got better. Over time, relationships deepened andlifelong friendships formed. In addition, she received academic encouragement, mentoring and leadership opportunities for personaldevelopment and growth beyond college. My daughter will be a senior this year and, looking back on her sorority experience, I amso thankful she was part of the Greek system at OU because it has benetted her in so many ways and has truly enriched her life.
WHAT ENCOURAGING WORDS OR ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE PARENTS OF PROSPECTIVE SORORITY MEMBERS?
The OU Greek system is one of the strongest in the country, so know that if your daughter chooses to go through recruitment, shewill be in good hands. Formal Recruitment, while it may seem overwhelming and scary at rst, is a fantastic opportunity for girls toget a glimpse of sorority life and decide whether it is something they want to be a part of. The week-long process is fun and
informative but can also be very exhausting so my rst advice is to wear comfortable shoes! Secondly, there are 11 outstandingsororities, all of which are strong nationally and provide equally valuable opportunities at OU, so encourage your daughter to beopen-minded, as this will help her have the most positive experience possible.
HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH YOUR DAUGHTER'S SORORITY?
Yes, it has been a wonderful experience for both of us, and actually the whole family. Her chapter has an active Parents' Club, as Ibelieve most do, which keeps us informed about various activities throughout the year that the women are involved in. The Parents'Club also hosts numerous events, such as House Mother teas and open house lunches on Parents' Weekend, Dad's Day and Mom'sWeekend. Aside from all of that, the part I enjoy the most is spending time with my daughter at the sorority house and getting toknow the other chapter members. I am always so impressed by the outstanding caliber of young women!

HOW HAS JOINING A SORORITY
BENEFITTED YOU HERE AT OU?
Being in a sorority has engaged me in a part
of campus that I might not have been involved
with otherwise; it has introduced me to a
diverse group of girls from a variety of states, different areas of study and backgrounds. I
have made strong relationships with many
that I have no doubt will be lifelong friends, I
have gained mentors who have been the best
resources since the beginning of my time here
at the University of Oklahoma, and I can't
imagine my college experience without them!
WHY SHOULD INCOMING STUDENTS
JOIN A SORORITY?
Sororities provide the greatest support
system, new experiences, lifelong memories
and friends. Joining a sorority will help you
build a stronger connection with the univer-sity and enhance the time that you spend
here. Whether you're interested in leadership
positions, philanthropies or intramural sports,
sororities offer many ways to get involved and
have meaningful experiences while making
valuable friendships and connections along
the way!

HOW HAS JOINING A SORORITY
BENEFITTED YOU HERE AT OU?
During my time at OU, being a part of
sorority has helped me nd mentors and
my niche. Without the guidance and
encouragement from older members, I would
not be who I am today. Daily, I am challenged
by my sorority sisters to become the best
version of myself, and they are constantly
supporting me in all aspects of my life.
WHY SHOULD INCOMING STUDENTS
JOIN A SORORITY?
A sorority provides a family and a comm unity
in which you can grow and ourish. When
studying for the MCAT this past January,
there was never a day without someone
encouraging me. Many of my sorority sisters
would write me notes and leave treats in my
room, and my phone was ooded with their
texts and phone calls lled with
encouraging words. This is just one example
of how a house can surround you with love
and encouragement during times of stress
or sadness. My sorority sisters have helped
me through my tears and cheered with me

One of the most gratifying aspects of sorority life is the sense of satisfaction and pride that comes with involvement in community service. women recognize the need throughout the year to raise money and donate time for their special philanthropies and community service pro
ideals of most sororities are exemplied through their service efforts. Sorority members donate thousands of hours and dollars to local and
philanthropic organizations each year. Fundraising events and service projects help sorority members learn about their responsibility to th
community. In taking advantage of these opportunities, sorority members learn the joy that comes from giving of oneself to help others.

GREEK LIFE IS A DIRECT SPRINGBOARD INTO CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT.

Being Greek also provides an invaluable network whenseeking employment and career opportunities. Through interactions with Greekalumni, you can begin building relationships that will helpyou in the future.
Sororities were founded as social organizations. The abilityto function comfortably in a social environment will provealmost as important as the ability to do so in a workenvironment. Sorority chapters at the University ofOklahoma provide a diverse selection of events that willenrich your social life and take you beyond the daily routineof class, working and studying. All of these events supportthe goal of bringing members together to develop bonds offriendship.
SISTERHOJoining the Greek system is the beginning of a newexperience. One of the most enjoyable parts of joininga sorority is making new friends and forming bonds thatwill last long after college is over. You will not only learn tolive with others but, through sharing the same experiences, environment and interests, you will develop a very special
closeness to those around you. Sisterhood means mwearing the same Greek letters, attending meetingsgoing to social events; it is about developing camara
and a sense of belonging that you will carry through
rest of your life.

CONTINUOUS OPEN RECRUITMENbiding guies
WHAT IS CONTINUOUS OPEN RECRUITMENT
(COB) OR INFORMAL RECRUITMENT?
Continuous Open Recruitment begins as soon as FormalRecruitment ends. In the fall and spring, eligible chapters areable to extend bids to women who do not receive bids on BidDay. This process is more laid back and, at the Panhellenicevent in the spring, gives chapters the ability to meet girls ona more personal basis.
HOW CAN I SIGN UP FOR CONTINUOUS
OPEN RECRUITMENT?Women who are interested in Continuous Open Recruitmentneed to ll out an Informal Recruitment Information Form. This
form will need to be lled out every semester the woman iseligible and interested in Continuous Open Recruitment.
WHAT CHAPTERS PARTICIPATE IN
CONTINUOUS OPEN RECRUITMENT?
This is dependent on multiple variables and cannot bedetermined until after Bid Day in the fall, and until the secondweek of school in the spring.
HOW WILL THE PARTICIPATING CHAPTERS
KNOW IF I AM PARTICIPATING IN
CONTINUOUS OPEN RECRUITMENT?
The Vice President of Recruitment Programming will give acopy of your Informal Recruitment Information Form to alleligible chapters. The chapters will then contact you if they areinterested in arranging another meeting with them.
WHAT IS THE PANHELLENIC SPRING
RECRUITMENT EVENT AND IS IT THE ONLY
INFORMAL RECRUITMENT EVENT?The Panhellenic Spring Recruitment event is a chance foreligible chapters to meet interested women in a more laidback setting, typically within the rst few weeks of school. This is the only event sponsored by Panhellenic, however, chapters may have one to three events depending on theirnational requirements.
WHAT IS A RECRUITMENT GUIDE OR
RHO GAMMA?
Recruitment Guides are upperclassmen women from variouschapters within our Panhellenic community who disafliate fromtheir chapters during the recruitment season in order to helppotential new members navigate recruitment. RecruitmentGuides are always available to speak with potential new
members as unbiased listeners, guides, and friends.
HOW ARE RECRUITMENT GUIDES CHOSEN?
There is an extensive application and interview selectionprocess, through which approximately 80 women are chosen.Leadership and enthusiasm are two qualities that are highlyregarded in our recruitment guides.
WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DO RECRUITM
GUIDES RECEIVE?
Recruitment Guides attend two trainings in the spring and two full days of training in the summer before potemembers arrive. In these trainings they learn the policprocedures of the week ahead of them. Recruitment galso required to attend One Sooner training, which is f
by the Womens Outreach Center on campus.
CAN I SPEND TIME WITH MY RECRUITM
GUIDE AFTER RECRUITMENT?
Yes! Being a Recruitment Guide is a yearlong mentorsposition. Recruitment Guides are encouraged to build with all potential new members during and after the recprocess.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
7/21/2019 2015 Pan Manual WEB
21/31
OW MUCH TIME DOES A SORORITY REQUIRE?
ere is a required meeting once a week where you willchange information on chapter events and fraternity education.eekly chapter study sessions are an option for all members, ong with events such as sisterhood activities, communityrvice projects and social events. Remember, the more you puto the sorority, the more you will get out of it.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO BE INITIATED?
Most chapters have an initiation period that ranges from four to12 weeks. The new member period offers opportunitiesto meet other members, learn fraternity history and establish alevel of comfort within the chapter. Each chapter builds its ownnew member program and decides its own initiation dates. This is a great question to ask active members as you meetthem during recruitment.
ARE UPPE RCLA SSME N ALLO WED T O
PARTICIPATE IN RECRUITMENT?
Most sororities look for a four-year commitment; however, most
of our groups do consider upperclassmen in their recruitmentprocess. Fewer upperclassmen than freshmen participate inFormal Recruitment and fewer join chapters. We cannotpredict any one persons recruitment experience. The bestadvice is to go t hrough the process with an open mind.
IS THERE A REQUIRED GPA TO PARTICIPATE
IN RECRUITMENT?
The OU Panhellenic Association does not require a specic
grade-point average to participate in Formal Recruitment. However, each sorority has a minimum grade requirement to beconsidered for membership and initiation. The average gradepoint for a freshman to j oin is around 3.20 and the average graderequirement for an upper-class student is around 3.00. Thesegrades are pulled from university records. So, for enteringfreshmen, we will use the grades that you were admitted to theuniversity. For upperclassman, we will use your overallGPA from prior spring semester.
DO I NEED TO ATTEND ALL OF THE PARTIES
LISTED ON MY RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE?
Yes, the objective of recruitment as a potential new member is tolearn as much about you can about the OU Greek community aswell as each of the chapters so that you can make the bestpossible decision regarding membership. If you intentionallymiss an event you were invited to, you are not maximizingyour options and you could be released from the Formal
Recruitment process.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MAXIMIZE
MY OPTIONS?
When a potential new member makes a selection, it is in herbest interest to rank all of the chapters she attended during thatround. By ranking all chapters, she maximizes her ability toreceive an invitation from any chapter for the next round. If apotential new member does not maximize her options, it ispossible that she will receive zero invitations for the next round. If a potential new member does not rank a chapter, she cannotreceive an invitation for the next round from that chapter. OUPanhellenic strongly discourages intentional single-preference.
WILL ALL PARTICIPANTS PLEDGE A SORORITY
AT THE END OF RE CRUI TMENT?
Recruitment is a process of mutual selection and, as such, there are many different outcomes to this process. Participationin Formal Recruitment does not guarantee an invitation to join asorority, nor does it obligate you to join. However, approximately80 to 90 percent of the women participating in FormalRecruitment each year join a sorority at the end of the week!
IF I PARTICIPATE IN FORMAL RECRUITME
AM I OBLIG ATED TO JOIN A SOR ORIT Y?
Potential new members who choose to participate in recare not obligated to join a sorority. The recruitment procestructured so as to allow women interested in sororitymembership the opportunity to explore Greek life and tois the right t.
IF I AM A LEGACY TO A SORORITY, IS THE
ANY THIN G THAT I SHOU LD KN OW?
It does not hurt nor does it help to be a legacy; it simply
our chapters that you have a family member who was a specic organization. Each sorority has its own policy relegacies, and it is up to the discretion of each individual as to whether they are interested in offering membershiplegacy. Likewise, legacies are not obligated to pledge thsorority that they are a legacy to.
WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO BE IN A
CERTAIN SORORITY?
Only wanting to be a member of one specic sorority or
considering a few sororities can severely limit a potentiamembers options for membership and can lead todisappointment. Panhellenic discourages choosing a sobased on stereotypes or others opinions. We encouragekeep an open mind and make a decision that i s right for
