TRANSCRIPT
2015 Franklin County Junior Fair
Pre-Fair Packet & Project Evaluation Schedule (This packet does not include horse information. Get horse info at www.fchorse.org)
This packet of information is provided so that 4-H families can get through the 4-H project evaluation
process with an increased knowledge of what to expect. Included in the packet are: 1. Specific times for members to check-in for their project evaluations
2. Samples of project evaluation score sheets
3. Schedules for club duties such as Ganyard Building Watch, Burke Building Cleanup, and Pop Stand Shifts
4. Special forms for cats, ferrets, and clothing projects
5. Other fair event information
Evaluation Schedule: The Evaluation Schedule is developed using the number of 4-H members enrolled in a given 4-H
project. It is difficult for us to predict what percentage of 4-H members will participate in county evaluations. Please
exercise some patience and flexibility when waiting for your judging time. Not everyone can go first and not everyone
can be judged at the same time. Our goal is that everyone has a positive and equitable evaluation experience.
Please understand that it is not our intention to make you wait long periods to see the
judge. Trying to predict who will show up for evaluations makes it very difficult to know
how long you will wait. Each project can only be evaluated by one judge so that the
evaluation is fair. If a judge must evaluate 30 kids’ projects, it takes a lot of time. We
want every child to have a fair amount of time to share his/her experiences.
There are many, many youth who have spent a lot of time and effort working on their
projects. We must give them all equal time with the judge so that they can experience
what it is to complete a project and feel the accomplishment of sharing their learning
experiences in an interview – that’s a great life experience! Note that the awards are not
announced until all members have been evaluated for that day’s event which often
means the first kids through will have to wait several hours for awards. Enjoy the fair!
Evaluation Check-In: Exhibitors should arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled project evaluation judging time to
complete check-in procedures at the Junior Fair Activities Tent.
Criteria for Judging: The judging/evaluation process will include:
A. An interview with a judge(s);
B. Exhibition of a project item(s) and/or educational display;
C. A completed project book
D. Participation in a skills component (for livestock projects)
E. All score sheets and blue/red/white ribbons for non-livestock projects will be distributed after seeing the judge.
Required Exhibit Display: After project judging, all exhibitors are required to place their project exhibit or something to
represent their project in their club booth or the countywide 4-H booth located in the Ganyard Building.
Awards: Recognition awards of blue, red and white ribbons will be given at the discretion of the judge. These will be
presented at the end of the interview. State Fair Selection and Alternates or Best of Class, Best of Show and Honorable
Mention, where appropriate, will be selected by the judges after all evaluations have been done for a given class. Only
members with a completed project book and blue ribbon will be eligible for the above mentioned awards.
Awards Ceremony: All awards, including Superior and Outstanding ribbons will be presented at the conclusion of the
judging event in the Junior Fair Activities Tent.
“The schedule says I was
supposed to check in an hour

evaluated?

POULTRY/BIRD PROJECTS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the ban on poultry at the fair just for chickens and turkeys?
No, ALL birds, including water fowl (ducks & geese) have been banned at the fair. There will not be any birds at the fair this year.
How can I complete my project?
Continue to raise your bird. Fill out your project record book. Participate in livestock project evaluations on Wednesday, July 15, at
the fairgrounds.
What can I do at the fair?
We still want you to participate in the fair. As a replacement to the poultry show, the Franklin County Fair Board will be holding an
Avian Bowl on Tuesday, July 21, at 9:00am in the Jr. Fair Activities Tent. All poultry members who enrolled in a 4-H poultry, duck, or
goose project by April 1, are eligible to participate – no fair entry required.
What is an Avian Bowl?
This is a contest that tests youth on their knowledge of avian facts and poultry production and management. (Similar to Jeopardy –
only you don’t answer in the form of a question.) Participants “buzz” in to answer questions. Some bowls use teams but for our
purpose of replacing showmanship, we will not have teams. There will be three divisions – Junior, Intermediate, and Senior.
Make sure you dress in comfortable, cool clothing as the activities tent can sometimes get very warm.
The Avian Bowl will begin with the Senior Division, then Intermediate, and finally Juniors.
What about the livestock sale?
While market poultry members cannot sell in the livestock auction, the Sale Committee has decided to contribute $50 to each
poultry market exhibitor at the Livestock Sale who completes their project by going through evaluation. Poultry market exhibitors
will be invited into the sale ring and have it announced. If buyers want to add on, then they have that opportunity.
Can I still participate in the Outstanding Market Exhibitor contest?
Yes, by participating in the required parts of the contest and the Livestock Evaluations and the Avian Bowl, you can still compete in
the Outstanding Market Exhibitor contest if you make a fair entry for it.
What about the Showman of Showman contest?
The winner of the senior division in the Avian Bowl will go on to represent poultry in the Showman of Showman Contest. The poultry
part of the contest will utilize toy stuffed hens.
How else can I “exhibit” my bird project at the fair?
Members are asked to bring to evaluations on July 15 a sheet of paper (8 ½” x 11”) that has a picture of their bird, the exhibitor’s
name, club name, and the breed of the bird. These will be laminated prior to the fair and posted in the barn.
See the next page for a template.
There isn’t a resource book for poultry yet. How do I study for the Avian Bowl and Project Evaluations?

EXAMPLE 1
Our next model is Insert 4-H Name, daughter of Insert names of parents of Insert city you live in. Name of 4-H’er is 8 years old and is a 2nd
year
member of Insert Club Name. For her dress, Shelby chose a Simplicity pattern. The dress is pink and white and is made from 100% cotton Keepsake
Calico Paisley print. The dress is a V-neck halter dress. The dress features elastic in the back. To complete her outfit, chose a matching bag and pink
headband and sandals. The most challenging part for was keeping the lines straight while sewing. However, she was really excited when she saw
the final dress. Insert 4-Her’s name plans to wear this dress on the first day of school as a 4th
grader at Alton Hall. Thank you, Insert 4-Her’s Name.
EXAMPLE 2
Our next model is Insert 4-Her’s Name, daughter of Insert 4-Her’s Parents Name of Insert name of City. 4-Her’s Name is 13 years old and is a 2nd
year member of the Insert 4-H Club. For her loungewear outfit, 4-Her’s Name chose two Simplicity patterns. The robe is made from grey moleskin
that is 97% polyester and 3% spandex. It is a robe with an empire waistline with gathered skirt and features set-in sleeves, three-button closure and
a Block O on the front pocket. The Block O came from a pair of gloves and was then appliquéd on. It is completely lined with red flannel for warmth
during cold winter Ohio nights. The sleeves can be cuffed to show off the red flannel. The baby-doll pajamas are made from a set of Ohio State
University patterned sheets. They are completely lined for modesty as the sheets are very thin. The pajamas have elastic at the neckline, sleeves,
and waistline of the shorts. The shirt-tail hem and hem of the shorts are machine-stitched for durability. Her slippers are flip-flops that are
decorated with strips of scarlet and gray from the robe. The most challenging tasks of this outfit were buttons and button holes, gathering, and top
stitching. The cost of this robe was approximately $33.00 because she used 40% off coupons and her accessories total about $17.00. She plans to
wear this outfit to sleepovers with friends and during her 8th
grade trip to Washington DC. This fall, she will be an 8th
grader at Hilliard Memorial
Middle School. Thank you, 4-Her’s Name.

You may notice the placement of timers on the evaluation
tables throughout the week of the fair. This is simply a
reminder to the judges that they should try to keep each
interview approximately equal in length. Many of them
lose track of time, so this is a helpful tool for them. Your
child is not being timed and they are not rushed from the
table when the timer chimes. It’s a way for the judge to
know that they should begin wrapping up the interview.

Has the rain interfered with success in
your garden project this year?
• That’s ok! Complete your project to
the best of your ability.
• Document how the rain affected
your yield and other aspects of the
project.
• Excessive rain happens sometimes
and it does hinder growing seasons.
• Our judges know this and
understand. This is a learning

A 4-H Poem There once was a boy who won some ribbons of blue;
Came home from the Fair with a big trophy, too.
With a voice glad and proud, he said to his Dad,
“Tis the very best year that I’ve ever had.”
Said his very wise Dad, “Son, I’d like to hear,
Why you think that this was such a very fine year.”
“Why, Dad, you well know all the prizes I’ve won;
How I’ve come out on top in most things I’ve done.
Just look at the ribbons that hang on the wall,
And think of the money I’ve made since last fall,
From premium checks and a big auction price,
You can’t help but think cash and ribbons are nice.”
But the man said, “My son, you’re not thinking right.
Blue Ribbons, tis true, are better than white;
But ribbons will fade and trophies grow old.
Monies soon spend and fame soon grows cold.”
“The important things, son, are not ribbons or pins,
And sometimes it’s really the loser who wins.
Now here are the things most important, it’s true,
Your 4-H experience has accomplished for you.”
You’ve seen how a business meeting is run.
This knowledge will help you in years to come.
You’ve conquered the fear of addressing a crowd.
You’ve learned how to stand up and talk nice and loud.”
“Patience you’ve learned in your project, too.
As well as some skills that will always help you.
You’ve learned the fine feeling it gives you to lend.
A glad helping hand to a stranger or a friend.
You’ve learned to cooperate with majority rule,
To give in with grace and not be the fool
Who always must have his very own way.
Be it in club work, in school, or at play.
You’ve learned how to lose without making a “beef”.
You know the judge judges to his/her best belief.
You’ve learned how to win without boasting too loud.
A kid can lose friends if he’s overly proud.”
“These are the things most important to you.
You’ll remember and use them all your life through.
They’ll help you become a mighty fine man.
They’ll do more for you than a prize ever can.
