School Overview

St Martin of Tours (St Martin’s) was established in 1958.

The student enrolment for 2017 February census was 511.4 with a family population of 334.

Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Primary School is in the Parish of Macleod/Rosanna. It is situated in the north/ east suburbs of Melbourne, approximately 15 km from CBD.

The school’s motto “Non Recuso Laborem” forms the base of the vision statement which calls us to build capabilities and confidence to embrace life’s challenges.

St. Martin’s prides itself on the reputation of having a strong school community spirit. Key features for building school community includes Monday morning whole school assembly, open classrooms once a term, Prep Grandparent morning and regular Friday night dinners where parents gather at grade levels to share a meal. Community events such as the Parish fete are held biannually. All members of the school community strive to do what’s best for the children.

The focus of the school is to ensure each child is supported and challenged in their learning. Teachers and parents are committed to the children’s development.

Preparation for Sacramental celebrations and student centred class Liturgies, give witness to the Religious Education program. Showcases are held to complement Inquiry learning topics. Students are offered enrichment and support programs including selection for inter-school sporting activities, choir, Reading Recovery, Maths Olympiad, Maths games, Maths Intervention, Chess Club and participation in writing competitions. An educational camp is offered to Year 5 students and students from Year 6 enjoy an outdoor Ed camp. A before school running club is offered to grade 4-6 students in term 2. Students from years 4-6 are also involved in inter-school sporting competitions.

The school is serviced by a well-being counsellor who is funded under the National Schools Chaplaincy and Student Welfare (NSCSW) Program. We NOW have access to Nirodah which provides counselling services for students. On-site speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychologist services are now provided each week. Weekly lessons include specialist programs for Italian language program, music lessons, library and specialist physical education.

Facilities include 21 well-resourced classrooms, a school hall (GECCO), a music room, LOTE room, LRC (library resource centre), canteen and an administration area. Yard facilities include rubber marked asphalt areas, adventure playgrounds, sandpit and grassed areas.

The school community celebrated a whole school Concert at the end of the year which was presented to the extended school community.

Students have the opportunity to be involved in extra-curricular activities. Rehearsals for the School Concert Band are conducted at 8am each Wednesday. Contract music specialist teachers are engaged to teach piano, violin, brass, percussion and wood wind instruments.

Principal’s Report

This year has been an exciting time for St Martin’s as we begin a major building project which will

greatly enhance our educational programs across our school. Prior to 2016 we received a 1.5

Million dollar grant for a new Learning Cluster. Throughout 2016 numerous meetings were held

with all stakeholders in relation to these works. As part of these preparations the Parish reviewed

the Parish / School Masterplan in conjunction with architects Smith and Tracey. Upon completion

of the masterplan it was decided that the new learning cluster would contain an underground

carpark to service future parking needs, 10 General Purpose Learning areas as well as central

break out areas and offices over the 2 upper levels. The new facility is due to be completed in

late 2018. The project budget for the facility is 3.5 Million dollars, $500,00 of which is being

supported by the Parish.

The school has continued to be involved in the University of Melbourne Network of Schools

(UMNOS) project which continues through until the end of 2018. The focus of the project for St

Martins is upon vocabulary to improve reading comprehension.

Once again all members of St. Martin’s school community lived the school motto of “Non Recuso

Laborem” (Embracing Life’s Challenges) during 2017.

Parish Priest’s Report

How is our parish school going?

Well, a barometer that can help us gauge the answer is to listen to the responses of parents who

are closely observing it, and especially the parents who are seeking a place for their child in our

prep intake for 2018.

In the interviews that our Principal Dane Malone and myself have had with these parents we

invariably hear something like this:

"We've heard good reports about St Martin's parish school and now that we've experienced

something of its culture ourselves- we are very impressed!"

And what have these new parents experienced?

The pride that the Grade 6 school tour leaders have in their

parish school and their ability to not just be good ambassadors

but even more, shining examples of the kind of students our

parish school is producing. And if that's not enough the new

parents wax lyrical about the teachers who presented at the prep

Information Night.

These parents also pick up on the sense of community that our

parish school exudes.

So the quality of our students, the excellence of our teaching

staff and a sense of community that is very precious within the

individualistic culture in which we live. I believe these new parents have provided an accurate

assessment of key aspects of our parish school.

Let us pray that we keep building on what we do well and also implement the recommendations

within our School Review. May we follow the spirit of our patron saint by not refusing the work

required to reach our full potential as a parish school!
