School Overview
St Anne’s school opened in February 1931. The Josephite Sisters were the first founders of the school until the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions came to the parish in 1941 to expand the school into junior secondary. In 1975, for the first time a lay principal was appointed.
St Anne’s is comfortable and well-maintained, having had a significant refurbishment, as well as the addition of a Multi-purpose Hall in the past ten years, and an expansion of the outdoor area from the purchase of two blocks of land along the Beresford Street boundary.
Our Pastoral Care policy reflects the philosophy that pastoral care should permeate all aspects of the school community. Regular meetings of our Student Wellbeing Core Team are scheduled to address the academic, social, emotional and behavioural needs of children. We have an integrated approach to curriculum planning. All class teachers utilise strong teaching approaches for Literacy and Numeracy. Inquiry Learning and Technology are other notable curriculum strengths, and the fully-coordinated Special Education program is directed towards catering for students’ individual differences and needs. The Physical Education program incorporates participation in skills development, swimming and outdoor education from Prep-Year 6 and district sporting competition for older students.
In 2015, St Anne’s had nine co-educational classes in a caring, intimate school, where individual students’ wellbeing is promoted. Curriculum features include specialist teachers in Performing Arts, Library, Reading Recovery, Interactive Technology Support and Italian Language study. There is a very active Parents and Friends Association and Class Representatives structure. Parents assist in such programs as classroom helpers, sport training, Saturday basketball competition, sacramental programs , the Kew Community Festival, the biennial school concert, excursions and working bees. The Out-of-School-Hours Care program is available both before and after school, and is shared with Kew East Primary School. Private lessons in piano, guitar, percussion and tennis are also available.
Our School Improvement goals were:

Principal’s Report
St. Anne’s exists to serve the local parish community and to provide an excellent education for students. The school prides itself on developing and nurturing intellectual, spiritual, personal, social and physical growth of the whole person. It is a caring, intimate school where the wellbeing of individual students is promoted. Parents are involved on committees and in directly supporting classroom programs.
Staff members; teaching and support staff, have continued to learn about and implement contemporary approaches to education. Class structures, level planning, team approaches and flexible groupings have become the norm. These elements go hand-in-hand with Inquiry Learning approaches which have been the underlying philosophy of our units of work for a number of years.
Our enrolment number has declined slightly, after a number of years of rapid growth. Our August 2015 census number was 201 students. In 2015, the classroom structure was;
1 x Foundation, 3 x Year 1/2 classes, and 3 x Year 3/4 classes 2 x Year 5/6 classes.
Each specialist area (Performing Arts, Italian and Library) is given one hour for every class in the school. Teachers’ planning time is gained by timetabling these specialist areas together, ensuring teams of teachers are released at the same time.
The Parents and Friends Association (P&F) continues to be invaluable in their efforts of fundraising and school promotion. The annual dinner dance is the highlight of the social calendar. Funds raised by the P&F through functions such as the dinner dance, as well as through grant submissions, are put towards the ongoing maintenance of the grounds and improvements to the facilities offered to our students.
In 2013, St Anne’s Parish began its partnership with St Bede’s Parish, North Balwyn under the leadership of Fr Werner Utri. This partnership has given us the opportunity to review the structure of our Parent Education Board and the Parish Pastoral Council, and has provided the opportunity for the principals of both schools to come together as part of the parish team.
