Through our motto “Love is Life,” we provide a unique and welcoming environment that

recognises strong Parish and School Links and values Parental involvement.

With a dedicated staff, and effective leadership team, educational initiatives are at the

forefront. As a welcoming Catholic School Community with a focus on living the values

of the Gospel, we work together to enable our students to be successful learners for life.

We encourage the development of the whole child in the search for their place in the

world and their inner happiness.

School OverviewSt John’s Catholic School is situated in the bayside City of Frankston, which is an

emerging, striving and unique part of the outer metropolitan scene. Its identity and the

focus of its community representatives are to present to its people and those from

outside its boundaries, a gathering of many cultures, faiths, and interests.

Unlike other Catholic schools established in the 1960’s, St John’s Primary School, has

its beginnings under the leadership of a lay principal. The school then transferred to

leadership by a congregational religious campus. After a period of time, St John’s

School reverted back to a model of lay principalship. The Frankston East school site

opened on 5th February 1967, with an enrolment of 24 students. Mrs. Margaret

Carruthers as sole teacher and principal.

With parish support and with humble beginnings, St John’s has developed and

flourished under the leadership of five principals, Sr Kevin Noonan FCJ (1970–1980), Sr

Peter Wilson FCJ (1980–1988), Mrs. Dana Morison (1989–1998) Paul Hartin (1998–

2016) and Tonia Flanagan (2016 ff). The Frankston faith community and parish

community welcome many newly arrived immigrants, most recently from the Sudan and

China.

St John’s Catholic School is situated both within the Frankston Catholic School Cluster

and across the primary sectors in the region. We have developed strong bonds,

including shared meetings, professional learning, assessment practices and reporting

moderations.

A third of our student population received an Education Maintenance Allowance. We

have an enrolment of 271 students who are predominantly English speaking and come

from socio-economically diverse backgrounds.

A primary focus of school life is to promote Gospel values in student well being. This

occurs in both peer and teacher interactions. We celebrate their individual gifts and

differences and also seek to highlight these as a cultural strength in our diverse school

population. We want our students to be enthusiastic in their learning and to develop

skills and competencies that will enable them to be active and purposeful citizens in

society.

The school campus consists of two main buildings linked by a covered walkway. The

main block is a two-storey split-level building containing: a library, children’s kitchen and

a classroom. The upper level hosts ten classrooms, two specialist rooms, a music and

an Italian room, information technology areas, Reading Recovery room and a literacy

room.   

The former church, which later became the Parish hall, was demolished in December

2009. A new hall, canteen and performing arts centre has been constructed.

We are fortunate that we are able to operate independently of considerations such as

parking and school access during the day. Native trees and shrubs are planted on

boundary areas. Natural banks separate the upper oval and the lower playground. A

program of beautification and landscaping improvements has been undertaken by

children, parents and staff over the past few years.

On the northern side an area has been covered to provide students with a shaded

learning environment. Extensive renovation to the junior learning area provides

additional spaces for specialist classes such as Drama, Music, Art, and Physical

Education. Information and Communications Technology have had significant

investment to create adaptive learning environments.

St John’s Primary School, Frankston East is a school that seeks to best promote

student achievement through building strong relationships with each member of the

school community and to use this as a foundation for its participation in the parish and

in the wider community.

Principal’s Report

St John’s has developed a five year strategic management plan. This plan prioritises the

childrens’ educational needs and ensures that our buildings, grounds, facilities and

resources meet the current and future needs of the Frankston East community.

In 2014, the school introduced ‘one to one’ IPADS to all children in grades 3-6. Class

sets of iPads are also available to students in grades Prep-2. This learning device has

been enthusiastically embraced by the children and has gained wide support from the

parents and families. St John’s is proud of its leading role in technology amongst the

Frankston cluster schools.

The staff professional learning has focused on exploring technology as a tool to

increase student engagement and to continuously improve learning outcomes for all

students.

The time dedicated to developing purposeful individual learning plans and to assist

parent support networks are a real strength in our learning community.

The Sacramental Program forms a strong partnership between Parish, home and the

school in preparing the children for the three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism,

Eucharist and Confirmation. The Sacramental programs invite parents to engage in their

faith development and understanding of the

Catholic faith in a new way, as parents.

St John’s Catholic School offers a rich and diverse curriculum. This is evident in the

following:

The Arts. The Art Room was a joint school and community partnership, established in

2014. This facility also hosts a ceramic shed and a kiln. The specialist Visual Art teacher

brings her expertise and enhances our strong focus on the Arts.

The Sports: St John’s School has a long and embedded culture of participation in sport

to promote active and healthy habits for all students.

Intervention: The school refurbished rooms to become intervention spaces, such as

Reading Recovery and LLI.

The Early Years Foundation Centre: The new project will be finalised by 5 July 2016.

The complex will become a contemporary Foundation Centre that will encorporate the

philosophy of Regio Emilio.

The leaders, teachers and Learning Support Officers are to be commended for their

dedication and commitment to their quest for educational excellence and support of the

parish and the broader local community of Frankston East

Year 1 Literacy results show great success. Year 1 Literacy Text Level results

show that 90.63 students achieved the Minimum CEM standard of Text Level 15.

75% of Year 1 students met Text Level 20, 11.36% growth from 2014.

40.63% of Year 1 students have already achieved the target of Text Level 28+

set for Year 2.

Curriculum Income and Expenditure – St John’s School - 2015

The high level of students reaching the minimum standard was maintained

across grade three with growth in reading.

High levels of student achievement are evident in grade five with some

variance due to due to the impact of the National Curriculum as it was

introduced from 2013.

Growth for those students identified with additional learning needs was

significant due to successful targeted intervention programs.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Student attendance is imperative to student success. Therefore, attendance

policies and expectations are communicated to parents regularly. Student non

attendance is monitored by class teachers, and referred to the school leadership

team.

Student attendance is included in Student Progress Reports, parent teacher

interviews, PSG and IEP meetings.

Chronic student non-attendance is addressed at a formal Student Attendance

Conference. The conference is chaired by the Principal and attended by the

student, parent, teacher and other support personnel. The aim of the conference is

to identify the reasons why the student is failing to attend school and design

appropriate strategies to ensure the student is in full attendance.

Leadership & Management

Goals

To develop an understanding of instructional leadership by promoting a

professional learning culture throughout the school.

Intended Outcomes

Increase role clarity within the leadership team.

Improve the effectiveness of communication between educators on staff.

Develop a plan to build leadership capacity.

Achievements Establishment of a digital interface of communication between all members of the

learning community. This included the school intranet, professional dialogue and

feed forward loops.

Promotion of a professional learning culture within the staff. A professional

learning culture has been defined, promoted and valued.

Increasing the percentage of teachers accredited to teach Religious Education.

The existing percentage is 78%.

Introducing the concept of distributive leadership. The Leadership team for 2015

consisted of the Principal, Deputy Principal, Religious Education Leader,

Numeracy Leader, Literacy Leader, Learning and Teaching Leader and Digital

Education Leader.

All staff participated in professional learning in the past school year.

Peer coaching and mentoring has been introduced to the staff, with a focus on

Contemporary education.

Future Directions

The future directions of St John’s Catholic School will be informed and collaboratively

planned as an outcome of the pending School Renewal process. This inquiry process is

inclusive of all the school’s key stakeholders, such as the parish priest, parishioners,

principal, school leaders, educators, students, parents and carers. This collective

process will culminate in the review panel school visits. These will occur on 4th and 6th

September 2016.

Current international research will also guide the collective decisions about the most

powerful actions necessary to continuously improve the following functions:
