Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Brian De Witt enters his first season as head coach

of the Chowan softball team. Prior to being named head

coach, De Witt served three years as an assistant coach for

the Hawks where he worked primarily with the pitchers

and catchers.

Meredith Long, Deputy Athletics Director, stated, "Coach

De Witt brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experi-

ence that we think will be beneficial in helping to guide our

program successfully. We are looking forward to the fu-

ture of Chowan Softball under his direction."

"I am honored and excited to be named head coach of the

Hawks softball program. It has a long history of success in

the classroom, on the field, and in the community. We will continue that success while striving to recruit and graduate

quality students," noted De Witt.

De Witt is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La

Crosse. During his time there, he was a member of an

ASA National Softball Team. Upon graduation, he took a

high school teaching position in Tomah, WI, where he was

also the head softball coach for five seasons. De Witt con-

tinued to play in the same ASA National League while in

Tomah.

He then became the head softball coach at Highland Com-

munity College. He turned around a struggling program

there and won 45 games in his three seasons as skipper. In

2004, De Witt became the first-ever softball coach at Loui-

siana State University-Eunice. He led the Lady Bengals to a

21-19 record, including a national ranking, in their first sea-

son of competition.

Before coming to Chowan, De Witt was the head softball

coach at Kalamazoo College, where he stayed for two sea-

sons.

He resides in Murfreesboro.

Ashley Archer embarks on her first year as an assis-tant coach with the Chowan softball team.

Head Coach Brian De Witt noted, "I am thrilled to have Ashley join the program. Her knowledge and experience will be a tremendous asset to the students and the future of our program."

Archer stated, "I am thrilled and honored to be chosen by Coach De Witt to be part of the Chowan University softball program. I knew when I stepped foot on Chowan's campus that this is where I wanted to start my coaching career. I will forever be grateful to have been given this opportunity."

Prior to coming to Chowan, Archer gained experience as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee at Martin. In that capacity, she provided primary skill instruction to outfielders, corner positions, and hitters while remaining actively involved in student-athlete leadership development. During her time with the Skyhawks, the University of Tennessee at Martin had one Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) First Team hon-oree, two OVC selections, one Second Team All-Region recipient, a Capital One Academic All-American, and Ohio Valley Freshman of the Year and All-OVC Newcomer.

From 2010-2012, Archer served as a varsity assistant coach at Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School while serving as an athletic mentor and tutor at Pur-due University. Chowan University stands in the

old Albemarle region of North

Carolina between the Roanoke and

Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner

of the state. The Murfreesboro area

was first settled during the sixteenth

and seventeenth centuries, when the

principal inhabitants were several

Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.

Today, the stately old homes seem to

whisper of the storied colonial and

antebellum days.

Murfreesboro is located approximately

60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120

miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Murfreesboro is the location of the

boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,

discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,

and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,

the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours

and special events are offered

throughout the year by local groups.
