“You have more to say than your genes do about your future”“When 300 million people believe in a bad idea, it’s still a bad idea.” –B.J. Palmer

In the midst of the media and celebrity endorsement of removing organs just because you possess certain genes, it may surprise you to know that the concept of “gene as fate” has been disproven. It turns out, you have more to say than your genes do about your future. Which then, of course, can mean the best of times or the worst of times. The fact is that RANDOM MUTATIONS DON’T EXPLAIN DISEASE. Monogenic diseases, or diseases that result from errors in the nucleotide sequence of a single gene, are exceedingly rare. In 2006, Yale University researchers showed that genes played only a 25 percent role in determining the length of your life. Using that data alongside a British researcher’s finding the same year that being overweight increased a woman’s chances of developing all kinds of cancer by 60 percent shows that certain lifestyle behaviors, such as being overweight, are far more significant than genetics. Or as Michelle Holmes, a cancer expert at Harvard University, told USA Today in 20101, “The genes have been there for thousands of years, but if cancer rates are changing in a lifetime, then that doesn’t have much to do with genes.” Far more powerful than “genetics” is epigenetics. Epi- or “Above” genetics tells us that decisions, choices, or lifestyle has a greater effect on your health, outlook, and future than your great-great-grandparents did. Journeying down the road of genes is a dangerous endeavor. As the Journal of the National Cancer Institute states, the risk of focusing on gene mutations is missing “opportunities to develop truly effective prevention strategies...based on a broad understanding of causative factors.”2 Or as we say in The Cancer Killers book, “The cause is the cure!” A November 2006 article in Discover Magazine, called “DNA Is not Destiny,” further emphasizes these points: “Epigenetics is proving we have some responsibility for the integrity of our genome.” Where we once believed genes predetermined outcomes, we now know that everything we do; what we eat, how our spines

function, if we smoke, sleep, or exercise—can all affect our gene expression and that of future generations.

You can’t pick your parents, but by focusing on The 5 Essentials of Maximized Living, you can do something very powerful and pro-active to pick your future.

Q: When I detox, why do I get a rash on different areas of my body?

A: It’s very common for toxins leaving the body to exit in ways that you might not expect. The skin is actually one of our major organs of detoxification. In addition to absorbing everything we expose it to, it releases toxins through multiple methods, like sweating.

5 Affirmations to Change Your Mindset and Your Health As a life coach, I assist in reframing perspectives. I help people view events, ideas, concepts, and emotions to find a more positive outcome or option. Even in my own life, I had to reframe my perspective when I was faced with health issues. I chose to change my mindset in order to see changes in my health.

Choosing a different perspective helped me take action. I started getting corrective spinal adjustments; I removed sugar, dairy, and grains from my diet; I began removing toxins from my home, and started to exercise — on purpose. Within six months, I experienced change. My blood tests came back normal, the lump in my breast disappeared, painful migraines were gone, and I started to lose weight. Everyone has a vast potential for growth, and it is important to recognize that every crisis is a point of opportunity as well as danger. For most of us, our healthiest human growth and greatest achievements can often be traced to the trust and hopeful expectations of someone supportive. For me, being a successful Life Coach involves helping people take advantage of the opportunity presented to them.

Change Your Mindset; Change Your Health.

The first Essential in Maximized Living is “Maximized Mind,” and within that essential I’d like to share five affirmations that helped me change my mindset when I faced a health crisis. They can help you too — whether you are seeking wellness or you are already in crisis.

1. I am supported. There is an entire network of offices, chiropractors, and assistants ready to support your decisions, answer your questions, and help you talk it out when you’re unsure of what to do.

2. I can help myself. I am the expert on myself, and within me, is the best doctor on the planet. I have to do the work because no one else can spark my healing or change my patterns.

3. I have a choice. I have a choice to change if I want to, despite whatever diagnosis or health issues I may be facing — whether I believe I ended up at this juncture by bad luck, bad germs or bad genes.

4. I am stronger than I think. I don’t need saving. I am not a mission or a charity, and I don’t need sympathy or pity. I need understanding, patience, and kindness. I have the power to say what I need to those around me who misunderstand.

5. I am courageous because I am doing something courageous. Not everyone will do what I’m doing. Not everyone will understand, but this is my courageous life and I need to do this because I know how brave I am. Now I get to prove it.

ARE YOUR

IN THE RIGHT PLACESCURVESTHE SURPRISING CONNECTION BETWEEN HEART HEALTH AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

We all can benefit from spinal correction, but perhaps not all for the same reasons. Each individual comes to a visit with their own set of needs and their own lifestyle choices. Women tend to be more likely to visit a chiropractor than men, making an understanding of women’s health vitally important in chiropractic care1. Specifically, the connection between heart disease – the No.1 cause of mortality in women – and spinal correction is not frequently recognized but could prove significant.

Heart Health as PriorityA healthy cardiovascular system is important not only because of the risks that cardiovascular disease, pose but because it is so heavily intertwined with the other functions in the body.

The same lifestyle adjustments that women should seek for the prevention of heart disease can also apply to diabetes, and both are connected with obesity and even discomfort. Chiropractors are uniquely positioned to help patients prevent these things2.

The time that chiropractors are able to spend with their patients and the focus that the chiropractic lifestyle places on prevention and lifestyle changes is perfectly suited to prevent metabolic disorders. This helps to protect your heart. If prevention is the key, chiropractic care can help women turn the key to unlock wellness.

Heart Health and the Nervous System Lifestyle prevention may not be the only connection between chiropractic care and the prevention of heart disease. Since the 1950s, researchers have believed heart disease may be connected with the nervous system3. More recently, in 2014, researchers detailed the way that sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous reactions relate to heart problems.

Page 7: 2015 Sept/Oct - Cancer Killers - Maximized Living Magazine

MAXIMIZED LIVING MAGAZINE 7

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) oversees involuntary functions and is divided further into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Through these neural pathways, both reactionary (sympathetic) and long-term (parasympathetic) reactions are sent.

The sympathetic system has heavy control over our heart rate, blood pressure, and blood vessel constriction regulation. In other words, an overactive sympathetic nervous system can misfire the cardiovascular system, which increases the risk of heart disease4.

The Chiropractic ConnectionTo monitor the way that chiropractic care – specifically, spinal correction – affects the sympathetic nervous system, 40 individuals were observed at a chiropractic visit. Blood pressure and pulse measurements were taken before and after, since sympathetic reactions can be seen in these changes.

After the spinal correction, readings indicated a positive sympathetic response5. Presumably, this can be related to spinal correction freeing neural pathways to provide more efficient communication.

The sympathetic nervous system is so involved with heart function and so dependent upon clear neural pathways, that spinal correction is a clear bridge between normal neural function and heart health.

The Role of Chiropractic CareHeart disease is a primary concern in public health and is truly the silent killer for women, many of whom may not even realize they are at risk. But women face many health concerns, from metabolic disorders and obesity to pregnancy discomforts and hormone regulation, immune function, and chronic inflammation.

An integrative, working relationship with a chiropractor can help women to receive necessary spinal correction to clear neural (and therefore, hormonal) pathways, as well as provide support for necessary lifestyle changes. Corrective care, a holistic health approach, and a focus on prevention place your chiropractor in a unique position to maximize your efforts to improve health and prevent disease6.

STINK ABOUT ink?What’s the

Learn why the Susan G. KomEn Pink Campaign isn’t really helping women win their battle against cancer, and what practical preventative measures to take instead.

Pink will be everywhere these next few months: From t-shirts to hats, to professional football players wearing pink shoes and pink helmets, to kids coloring their hair pink — but what is all this for? The original purpose of all this PINK was breast cancer awareness and the importance of PREVENTION! Instead, the message has been about reminding women 40 years of age and older to get mammograms. This is far from what it means to prevent breast cancer.

The percentage of time that mammograms are incorrect providing a false negative or false positive. They are also ineffective at detecting cancer in up to 50 percent of women (those who have dense breasts or implants) –Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle

Mammogram FACTSMammograms may be successful at finding cancer after it’s been there for YEARS, but it doesn’t PREVENT anything! Even top cancer expert, Dr. Samuel Epstein, concluded that these early detection measures are far from safe1. In fact, mammography, which employs radiation, can increase your cancer risk since ionizing radiation causes cancer1. Mammograms also:

• Use compression, which can damage breast tissue1 or potentially spread cancer1.

• Can lead to over-diagnosis and overtreatment of noninvasive cancers 1.

• Can lead to the disturbing practice of “preventative” double mastectomies 1.

threatened to take his life 5 years ago. He allowed his

True preventionThere are so many lifestyle choices that have been scientifically tested to have the ability to cut your risk of cancer4. Do you see the “PINK” campaign or your doctors sharing this information? What to start right now:• Follow the Maximized Living Advanced Plan or Core Plan diet4.• Do MaxT3 dail (High intensity/short duration exercise)4.• Avoid or minimize alcohol consumption.• Sleep, sleep, sleep4.• Do corrective spinal care3.• Minimize toxicity. Minimize toxins in what you eat, put on your

skin, clean with, and cook on4.

DON’t forgetAvoid eating out of plastics and cans completely! Some chemicals in plastic such as BPA have been found to be highly carcinogenic2. BPA is found in most water bottles and canned food linings. Though a few companies have BPA-free linings, the lining in most canned foods that keeps the food from interacting with the metal of the container has BPA in it—which leaches into your food2. The rule of thumb for plastics is: symbols 1,2,4,5-stay alive; 3,6,7-straight-to-heaven.

Lack of exercise. Fat cells act like an endocrine gland and release more estrogens5, creating a hormonal imbalance. This contributes to hormone cancers as well as colon cancer in women and men4.

The percentage by which research shows supplementing with curcumin or turmeric

can decrease your cancer risk6.Higher levels of vitamin D, are associated with substantially lower incidence rates of colon, breast, ovarian, renal, pancreatic, aggressive prostate and other cancers7.

Cancer fighting FOOD FACTS • Soy based foods contain a higher

concentration of phytoestrogens, which contribute to hormone cancers, as well as colon cancer, in women and men. Minimize soy in your diet8.

• Avoid high sugar and bad fats8.

Your M.D. or oncologist may be intelligent, but if you want to truly prevent cancer, go to a genius! This September and October, all over the United States and Canada, Maximized Living doctors will be hosting a REAL prevention campaign: “Cancer Killers presents: A Women’s Guide to Wellness.” You will learn how to TRULY PREVENT cancer, heart disease, exhaustion, obesity and other threats to women’s health. There is something about fragrances that make us and our dwelling spaces feel fresh and clean, but products that contain fragrances may be stressing your body and opening the door for illness to set in. Most of us do our best to avoid artificial chemicals in our foods, never realizing that inhaling them or applying them to our skin is just as harmful as eating them.

PhthalatesCandles, plug-ins, and other room deodorizers often contain phthalates3. According the Environmental Working Group, “studies have shown that chemicals called

phthalates can trigger what’s known as “death-inducing signaling” in testicular cells, making them die earlier than they should. Yep, that’s cell death – in your man parts. If that’s not enough, studies have linked phthalates to hormone changes, lower sperm count, less mobile sperm, birth defects in the male reproductive system, obesity, diabetes and thyroid irregularities.”

Look for candles made with beeswax and other natural ingredients, free of artificial scents. Better yet, do away with all fragrance products, and bring in some live plants to improve the quality of air in your home naturally.

Diethanolamine (DEA)Soaking the cares of the day away is one of the most classic go-to home remedies for stress. Unfortunately, even this icon of self-care has been tainted with toxic products,

creating a literal bath of chemicals. Be sure to read the labels on your bubble bath, shampoo, body wash, and other latherable items, and steer clear of products that list cocamide DEA. It is among the most prolific of carcinogenic ingredients1.

FormaldehydeIf you’ve ever taken a biology class, you will likely recognize this cancer-causing chemical as a preservative3. While product labels on makeup and other cosmetics won’t say

“formaldehyde,” you may see these formaldehyde-releasing chemicals2 listed: DMDM hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl urea, Diazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol), 5-Bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane or Hydroxymethylglycinate.

Propylene GlycolYou could be slathering your body in antifreeze disguised by the beautiful fragrance of flowers. This chemical is linked to liver problems, kidney damage, skin cell growth inhibition, damaged

cell membranes, rashes, respiratory damage, immune system deficiency and central nervous system depression3.

Unfortunately, in our modern world, we can’t avoid toxins completely. By incorporating The 5 Essentials, you will help your body’s natural detox channels perform optimally, enabling them to better process toxins that you do come in contact with. So make sure you feed your body maximized nutritious foods, engage in daily exercise, and of course, minimize these toxins whenever you can by reading labels and choosing better options.

If you have questions about any of The 5 Essentials, attend an event in your area, or ask your Maximized Living Chiropractic Doctor about how to get started.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CLARISSA CHUNA professional female wrestler gives the nitty-gritty on what it takes to win, how to overcome obstacles, and 5-Essentials-inspired tips that every woman can live by.

2008 Bejing Olympian2008 World Champion2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist

By Dr. Kristen Kells, DC

KK: How did it feel to win the Olympic Bronze for the United States?

CC: It felt awesome. Everyone trains hard for this. In 2008, I missed the Bronze medal so it was awesome to be able to win. It was great being able to feel good, to be able to perform, compete and wrestle well. Like life, wrestling has its ups and downs. It is an all day event so it is crucial to be able to stay focused and in-tune. It is a balance of everything – from energy to the way your body feels. It is what you put in.

KK: How did your family feel when you won the Bronze?

CC: My mom cried more than I did! They were ecstatic. 2004 was my first go at the Olympics and so this was my fourth go at it. In 2007, my family questioned how much longer I was going to wrestle. They understood my goals but still wondered how much longer. I love my family and they have always been supportive. In 2012, they said, “You Got It!” but my friends were on the bus yelling “Four More Years!”

KK: What did it take mentally and physically to come back?

CC: Being able to trust everything I put into the healing process – to make it as good as or better than it was before the injury. It took time, patience, trust, and commitment to the process. It meant doing the things I didn’t want to do! Being able to do the daily things I needed to do was a challenge so it made me use my non-dominant side. This challenged me to do things differently on the mat once I got back into training. These injuries were my body’s way of telling me I needed a break.

Through the process, I learned to listen to my body.

KK: Since you have one of the longest careers in wrestling, what are your key conditioning tips for longevity and health management?

CC: Half of it was switching things up. I had three years of wrestling in college, five years at the Olympic Training Center and five years with [my trainer] – I was always changing things up. I have always kept learning: learning good eating habits, nutrition, wrestling techniques, weightlifting techniques and conditioning techniques. Having a variety of mentors has really helped in my success. I have surrounded myself with a great group of people who support my goals and dreams.

KK: What message do you have for our patients?

CC: Surround yourself with the best people. I grew up in the Judo world, and I learned you always want to challenge yourself. Don’t shy away from people or opponents who are better than you. I have great teammates, and they help me strive to be the best. I have to beat the best in the United States.
