The History and Social Studies Department pursues learning through a continual awareness and guidance of the Christian ethic: followed by a Socratic atmosphere where students are encouraged to think and question in an independent and critical manner. Students learn of human rights and values, which are not dictated, but nurtured through practice, example, and application in a Christian community. These rights and values are examined and tested in historical, political, social and economic areas. In addition, students pursue learning by reading, writing and using various methods of research and investigation processed through inductive and deductive reasoning. It then follows that hypotheses are tested and examined in an effort to arrive at conclusions, which test the validity of accepted concepts and truths. The application of Christian values, concern for human rights and the testing of valid concepts and truths, organize itself through sensitivity toward various cultured heritages and a global awareness of cultural diversities. Democratic principles stand the test against such complex phenomena and the student learns what role this nation plays in striving to maintain a peaceful balance between other nations and itself. Students also learn to test the Christian values and Democratic concepts on the local level, in the government, their neighborhood, and, or in their own school community, by being invited to participate in various activities offered by these institutions.
