LITTLEROCK—ArkansasChildren’sHospital(ACH)admittedanaverageoftwochildreneachweekwithall-terrainvehicle(ATV)injuriesin2014,accordingtonewdatare-leasedtoday.Manymorechildrenweretreatedinemergencydepartmentsandfamilyphysicianof-icesstatewide.TheArkansasInfantandChildDeathReview(ICDR)Programstud-iescasesofunexpecteddeathtochildrenagesbirthto17.Itsindingsunderscoretheimpor-tanceofproperuseofATVsandsafetygear.“WehavereviewedcaseswheretheuseofanATVcontributedtothedeathofevenveryyoungchildren,”saidDr.PamelaTabor,directoroftheArkansasICDRProgram.“There’sisnoreasonthatthesedeaths—andinjuriesthatrequireemer-gencytreatment—can’tbeprevented.”Between2009and2013,Arkansashadthena-tion’shighestATV-relateddeathrateforchildren17andunder.ATVs,alsocalledfour-wheelers,arepopularamongyouthandteens,especiallythoselivinginruralareas.AsthepopularityofATVshasrisen,sotoohasthenumberofdeathsandin-juriestopeopleofallageswhousethem.Nationally,

childrenunderage16accountfor23percentofdeathsandinjuriesrelatedtoATVuse.TheAmericanAcademyofPediatrics(AAP)rec-ommendsthatchildrenunder16yearsofagedonotrideATVs.How-ever,usingthefollowingsafetybehaviorscanhelpreducetheriskofseriousinjuryordeathtoridersofanyage:·Alwayswearahelmetandothersafetygear.·Chooseanappropri-atelysizedATVforthedriver’sage,sizeandphysicalabilities.·Don’tcarrypassengersunlesstheATVisspecii-callydesignedforpassen-gers.·TakeanATVridercourse(manycountyco-operativeextensionof-icesofferafreecourse).·Anadultshoulddirectlysuperviseyoungriders.

January1,1969,mustcom-

plete a hunter educationcourse and carry a validhunter education card tohuntinArkansas.Ifyouareundertheageof16youcanhuntwithouthuntereduca-tion,butyoumustbeunderthedirect supervisionofsomeonewhoisatleast21years old. Arkansas alsorecognizeshuntereducation

cardsfromotherstates.Therearemanywaysto

completethehuntereduca-tioncourse.Probably themostpopularistheinstruc-tor ledclassesheldacrossthestate.Thecourse isa10hourinstructorledclasswithhandsondemonstra-tions.Thecoursemaybespreadoutoveranumberofdays,orheldatone10hoursession.Youwillhaveto pass a test to receiveyourhuntereducationcard.Interestedstudentsmaycall800-482-5795toindacourseintheirarea.An online self study

Hunter education more than a requirement

Now is the time to start checking things of your hunting to-do list. Ater all, no matter how you slice it, there is a lot of work that goes into getting ready for the season.

hankfully, for today’s hunter, things have changed drastically from previous decades. It used to be that hunt-ers slept in tents, heated tin cans of beans over an open ire, wore pufy down parkas to keep warm and stayed near paved roads in case they needed help.

Now, lodges, guides, cooks, cell phones and all-terrain vehicles make hunting a more enjoyable and safer ex-perience.

he following tips will help you get prepped for this year’s hunting season:

• Check your license.

Ensure that your hunt-ing license is valid and covers all varieties of wildlife you intend to hunt. Even if you’ve hunted in the same loca-tion, check that permit requirements haven’t changed. Regulations get updated yearly, so don’t assume that what was valid last year still applies to your favorite watering hole.

• Pack your bag. If you’re planning to trav-el out of town, you’ll need a hunting permit for that state. If you’re staying local, your bag should be illed with es-sential items that will help you survive any unexpected situation—be it weather or some-thing else. his includes a cell phone, GPS, irst aid kit, lighter, binocu-lars, small rope, pocket knife, bottled water and a few high-energy

snacks.• Take the right cloth-

ing. Depending on where you’re headed, you’ll need a light or heavy jacket, gloves, hat and layers for nights when the tempera-tures dip. And don’t forget the rain gear. If in a warmer climate, you can dress down with lighter clothes, but whatever the case, don’t forget your orange hunting vest. One ca-veat: wash any clothes you intend to wear with unscented laundry de-tergent. Animals will be able to smell you a mile away and will not come near you.

• Bring any necessary accessories. his could include extra ammuni-tion, maps, a lashlight, a whistle and if you’re a smokeless tobacco user perhaps a portable spit-toon.

D & R Marine was originally bought in 2001 by Donna and Ran-dy Riddle from Napa, California, but was not opened until 2005. he husband and wife stated that they got tired of the city life, where they per-formed the same kind of business: selling and re-pairing RVs and boats. When their daughter was about to graduate from high school, they made the decision to slow down.

At D & R Marine, Randy does most of all the repairs on campers, boats, boat motors, all things marine, RV, and insurance repairs. he couple stopped selling boats some time ago, but they have a good relationship with local

dealers, who send them a great deal of business. he Riddles also do winterization on all the above mentioned ve-hicles.

Donna stated “hat people of Southwest Arkansas don’t real-ize how well they have it - no traic, beauti-ful scenery, and lots of land. You would never ind 10 acres of land and a house all together in California.” She also stated that, while she enjoys visiting her rela-tives back in Napa, she oten misses Murfrees-boro and can’t wait to get back into Arkansas.

“he customers here are like family, and so kind, always ofering to help. hey don’t just come to the store to make a purchase, they visit.” he Riddles said.

Randy Riddle went out looking to buy himself a hunting blind; he want-ed to see them in living color. However, all the stores he went to didn’t really have a selection or what he was looking for. He searched online and found Redneck Blinds, which seemed to serve his purpose. He ordered one and liked it so well that he contacted the company, and a deal was struck in which he would purchase and sell the blinds. he store of-fers diferent kinds of hunting blinds and has plenty in stock for the customers’ choosing.
