Jen Walter enters her 16th season as the head coach of the St. Scholastica softball program in 2015. The eight-time UMAC Coach of the Year has guided the Saints to 14 UMAC Regular Season titles the past 15 seasons and 12 UMAC Tournament Championships. CSS has made four NCAA Tournaments under Walter.

Walter has had 12 winning seasons, including six with 30-plus victories. In 2014, Walter became the third St. Scholastica Head Coach of any sport to record at least 400 wins at the school.

Under her tutelage, the Saints received their first national ranking in 2004 when they appeared in the NAIA poll and were ranked as high as No. 13. Upon entering NCAA Division III competition in 2005, the Saints took just over a year to appear in the national poll, peaking at No. 15, just missing out on an NCAA tournament berth despite going 34-7 overall. The Saints earned their first NCAA postseason bid in 2006 as the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Regional, where they earned Coach Walter’s 200th career victory.

The Saints are 213-16 against UMAC opponents in Walter’s tenure. CSS has earned NAIA or NCAA postseason berths in nine seasons under Jen Walter, and won the NAIA regional in 2004 to earn the program’s first ever NAIA National Tournament berth.

“What I love most about coaching at St. Scholastica are the players,” says Walter. “In my 14 years here, I have met some great student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom and continue to excel beyond St. Scholastica.”

Entering 2015, Walter has coached three All-Americans, including two-time first teamer Laura Heise (2004, 2006), second team honoree Rile Dawson (2007), and third team honoree Erica Kozacek (2003). Her players have earned 41 All-Region nominations, 95 All-Conference selections, and 10 conference player of the year awards. Walter earned conference accolades for her coaching in 2001, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’09, ’10, ’12 and 2014.

After graduating from Wadena High School as a two-time All-State softball honoree, Walter went to Golden Valley Lutheran College in Minneapolis where she was named a Junior College All-American catcher and then Augustana (S.D.) College where she earned All-Region honors. She graduated from Augustana in 1986 with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

In the summer of 2010, Walter was inducted into the Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame as a player.

Before joining St. Scholastica in 2000, Walter was the assistant softball coach at Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn. and also served as head softball coach at Perham High School from 1989-91. She also coached basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and cross-country at Breck School in Golden Valley, Minn. while also teaching lower and middle school physical education from 1991-97.

In December 2006, Walter earned Master Coach status from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She continues to grow as an educator and a coach by participating in the Women Coaches Academy, co-sponsored by the Winstar Foundation and the NCAA. She also serves on the Midwest All-Region Selection Committee.

“I have the greatest job in the world,” says Walter. “I get to be around young women who have the desire to become great softball players and along the way become great people. There are tons of frustrations and challenges, but in the end, the rewards, on the field and off, are so worth it.”

Mya Gordon enters her fifth season on the CSS Softball staff in 2015. Gordon played for the Saints during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Rilee Dawson enters her eighth season on the softball staff in 2015 after a successful four-year playing career. In her final season at CSS, Dawson was named to the NFCA All-American Second Team. She was also the UMAC Player of the Year.

While at St. Scholastica, Dawson started 100 games including 46 as a pitcher. She holds a career .349 batting average with 13 home runs and 91 RBIs, along with a 2.34 ERA, 34-14 win-loss record and 300 strikeouts in 299 innings. During one, three-game stretch her senior season, Dawson hit a NCAA record six consecutive home runs.

As a coach in the Saints program, Dawson works primarily with the pitchers. She is also the recruiting coordinator and assists with the Saints winter camps.

Dawson, an Eveleth native, graduated in the spring of 2008 with her Doctoral of Physical Therapy degree. She is currently working at St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Darcy Roach enters her second season on Coach Walter’s staff in 2015. Roach is coming off a pitching career for the Saints, which saw her finish with 37 career wins, tied for second-most in program history.

She finished with 329 strikeouts in her career, which ranks third all-time. Her 19 wins in 2012 are the fifth-most in program history. The two-time All-UMAC selection was also named Academic All-UMAC twice and a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2013.

Caring for athletes is part of our bigger commitment to the community. Essentia Health

donates more than $600,000 of our sports medicine services to the region’s schools each year.

We are the official team physicians to the Duluth Huskies, UMD, UWS, Hibbing Community College,

and The College of St. Scholastica. We’re medical directors for Grandma’s Marathon, the NorthShore

Inline Marathon and company physicians for the Minnesota Ballet. And we’re certified athletic

trainers for high school athletes at Duluth Central, Duluth East, Esko, Hayward, Hermantown,

Hibbing, Marshall, Northwestern, Proctor and Superior.

To us, that’s what sharing expert orthopaedic care is all about.

Tom has been at The College of St. Scholastica since August 2002 and is presently working with Football and Baseball. He also has worked on call for SMDC (St. Mary’s Hospital-Duluth). Tom graduated from CSS with a Master of Arts in Exercise Physiology in 2002 and a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Physiology in 2001. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association and Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner

(2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.

EXAMPLEIf there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.

(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes

(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams. Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points
