UTAH BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOKAt first glance, the 2015 Utah baseball team

looks young. The Utes have just two seniors on the roster, with 14 freshmen joining the team. However, many of the juniors and sophomores on the team have significant playing experience with numerous starts under their belts.

“We do have 14 freshmen on the team, which strikes you as being young, but seven or eight of our offensive and position players played basically every day last year, so it doesn’t seem like we’re very young out there,” Utah head coach Bill Kin-neberg said. “Two of our starting pitchers are back, so that doesn’t make me feel like we’re very young either. However, if we have some injuries, that’s where our youth comes in. Our backups are young players. Those guys will get some playing experi-ence this year. At this point I feel pretty good about their progress, and the maturity of our guys who have played the last few years and the roles they are taking.”

Key returning players include junior Kody Davis, who started every game last year at second base, and Wyler Smith, who also played every game last year in the outfield.

ScheduleThe 2015 schedule features five teams that are

currently ranked in one of the preseason baseball polls: Pac-12 foes UCLA, Arizona State, Oregon and Stanford, along with Oklahoma State in non-con-ference action. Highlighting non-conference play is the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge, with the Utes facing Kansas State, Kansas and Oklahoma in addition to Oklahoma State. The Utes also have a three-game series against Kansas.

The Utes get underway on Feb. 13 in a four-game series at Sacramento State, and have their first home game of the year on March 17 vs. Utah Valley. Pac-12 teams visiting Salt Lake City this season include California (March 27-29), Arizona State (April 2-4), Washington State (April 24-26), USC (May 1-3) and Oregon (May 15-17). Southeast-

ern Louisiana also visits SLC (April 10-12) and Utah hosts two of three games this year against in-state rival BYU (March 24, May 12).

The Utes are scheduled to have 17 games tele-vised on the Pac-12 Networks.

InfieldDavis hit .237 for the Utes last year and led

Utah in walks (28) while tying for the team lead and sixth in the Pac-12 in stolen bases (12). Other returning players joining Davis in the infield include junior Cody Scaggari at shortstop, who has started 59 games over the past two seasons. He hit .288 in an injury-shortened season last year with a .370 on-base percentage. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Carroll, who was sidelined last year after breaking his collarbone in the first game of the season, hit .282 in 28 games his freshman year and will start at third base.

“Dallas, Kody and Cody staying healthy and being in the lineup is going to be key for us,” Kinne-berg said. “They are going to hit 1-2-3 and will be important both offensively and defensively. They are probably the most important guys we have, as far as making sure they are in the lineup day in and day out.”

Several players could see time at first base. Sophomore Hunter Simmons made 27 starts in the outfield last year, hitting .198 with four doubles. Senior Biss Larsen hit .209 in 2014 and has played in 73 games in three years with 47 starts between first base, third base and designated hitter. New-comers battling for a position include junior trans-fer Kellen Marruffo, who was an all-region and all-conference player at Pima Community College. Freshman Wade Gulden earned Northern Section Most Valuable Player honors at Shasta High School in Redding, Calif. Other infield backups include Kyle Hoffman, who redshirted as a freshman last year. He was an all-state player at Taylorsville High School in Utah.

“First base may be a platoon situation, or a guy will win the spot outright,” Kinneberg said. “Wade

is the swing guy who can play all four positions and he adds another left-handed bat, which is why he’s looking at first. He is a true shortstop, and if you have a shortstop at first base, defensively you are probably pretty good. Kyle Hoffman has really improved on the defensive side so if something happens to Cody Scaggari, that can be an option for us.”

OutfieldTwo of Utah’s three outfield starters return in

Smith (center field) and sophomore Josh Rose (right field). Smith hit .259 last year with three triples, five stolen bases and 17 RBI. He had the team’s longest hitting streak (10 games) and tied for the team lead with 13 multiple-hit games. Josh Rose made 24 starts in the outfield, hitting .188 with three home runs and 11 RBI.

Several freshmen are battling for an open spot in left field. Jayson Rose and Andre Jackson, both who are also looking at roles on the pitching mound, are among the players with an opportu-nity to earn the starting role. Jayson Rose (brother of teammate Josh) was a first-team all-state, first-team all-section and first-team all-CIF player at Granite Hills High School in California. Jackson was a 32nd round pick to the Texas Rangers in the 2015 MLB Draft and was a second-team all-state pick at Cienega High School in Arizona. Armett Johnson was ranked as one of the top 75 players in California by scouting service Perfect Game at Crespi Carmelite High School. Neil Sterling earned second-team all-area and second-team all-league honors at Serra High School in California.

“I feel very confident with our returning guys, both on the offensive and defensive side,” Kinne-berg said of Smith and Josh Rose. “In left field, we may platoon, we may play the hot hand, we may play the best defensive guy, or whatever situation may arise. Jayson Rose has won it at this point, but Andre and Armett are right behind him if not even with him. Sterling has had a really good fall, so he also has a chance. Those four guys have a

CatcherBehind the plate, junior AJ Young has started

54 games between catcher and designated hitter over the past two years. He hit .203 in an injury-shortened season last year with a .372 on-base percentage. Sophomore Max Schuman made 25 starts at designated hitter as a freshman and also played in the outfield with one start at catcher, hitting .212 over 45 games with 18 RBI, two triples and a home run. Cole Taylor redshirted last year as a freshman and was all-league at Oaks Christian High School in California.

“We have three players we are going to count on behind the plate,” Kinneberg said. “AJ will be the starter, and there is a battle for the second spot between Max and Cole. Cole has really improved offensively and has worked very hard defensively to get himself into the mix. Between those two we’ll figure out a backup. Max will be in the lineup most days either catching or at desig-nated hitter, so Cole could play a valuable position for us if we need to pinch run for AJ.”

PitchersPitching is one of the areas that was hardest hit

among the key losses, with Mitch Watrous, Tanner Banks and Nick Green all going in the MLB draft.

Brock Duke returns to the Utes after sitting out most of the last two years with injuries.

Juniors Dalton Carroll and Bret Helton as well as senior Brock Duke (who has sat out most of the past two seasons after Tommy John surgery) return the most starts and innings. Carroll went 1-5 last year with a 5.31 ERA in 15 appearances and 11 starts. He allowed just 11 walks, which was the second-fewest in the Pac-12, with 38 strikeouts. Helton made 17 appearances with eight starts, going 2-4 with a 4.99 ERA and one save, recording 35 strikeouts. Duke is 10-11 with four saves in his career with a 5.52 ERA, making 53 appearances with 27 starts.

“Dalton and Bret head the staff or us, as far as guys who have thrown a lot of innings,” Kinneberg said. “They are our projected leaders on the staff. Brock Duke is back. He brings a lot of experience, and he’s healthy. We need to find the role for him, whether he’s going to start or be in the bullpen, we don’t quite know yet, but he’ll throw significant innings.”

Sophomore Dylan Drachler was second on the team in appearances last year (22) and went 1-2 with a 7.98 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Sophomores Dustin Hughes and Hunter Rodriguez both saw in-nings as freshmen last season.

Another player who will see innings is junior Nolan Stouder, who redshirted last year after trans-ferring from the College of Southern Idaho, where he earned all-region honors.

Several freshmen are expected to play key roles on the mound, beginning with Jayson Rose, who is expected to both pitch and play in the outfield.

Spencer Johnson earned second-team all-league honors at Northgate High School in California. Tan-ner Thomas was a first-team all-league selection at Grandview High School in Colorado, while Trenton Stoltz was an all-star at Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix, Ariz. In addition to Rose, Andre Jackson will also both pitch and play in the outfield.

“Jayson Rose has established himself as one of the top guys on our team,” Kinneberg said. “Again, we don’t know the exact role for him. We’re hop-ing Drachler is in the mix as far as a starting role is concerned. Nolan Stouder, who was out for us last year, has really done a nice job of getting healthy and getting back into it. The other four freshmen are going to really add depth to our bullpen and our staff. Spencer Johnson has had a great fall and a great beginning to the spring. He can probably play all three roles - middle relief, short relief or even start, and we’re not exactly sure what that will be at this point. Tanner Thomas has a great arm. He’s got to be a little more consistent, but he has a chance to throw a lot of innings. Stoltz is the same way - he has a chance to pitch a lot as well.

“Our depth on our pitching staff has been far greater than it’s ever been, it’s just a matter of lin-ing up roles for everybody and finding what’s going to work best for us.”

Cody Scaggari has started 59 games over the past two seasons.

HEADLINE UTAH BASEBALLCOACHING STAFF

The dedicated and personable Bill Kinneberg enters his 12th season at the helm of the Utah baseball team, with 2015 marking his 20th year as a head coach at the collegiate level.

Kinneberg led Utah back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1960 in 2009, as the Utes won their first Mountain West Conference tournament with a 9-3 win over San Diego State in the championship game. Utah won two games at NCAA’s, defeating Gonzaga and Georgia Southern in the Fullerton Regional.

Several players have earned national honors under Kinneberg. C.J. Cron was a two-time first-team All-American in 2010 and 2011, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, the two-time District Player of the Year and a two-time MWC Player of the Year. Ryan Khoury earned first-team All-America honors in 2006, and was also District Player of the Year and MWC Player of the Year.

Kinneberg has had six players drafted in the first 10 rounds out of Utah, including the Utes’ first-ever first-round selection in 2011, when Cron was the 17th overall pick. Tyler Wagner was drafted in the fourth round in 2012. Three players were drafted in 2014, including two in the first 10 rounds - two-time honorable mention Pac-12 selection Mitch Watrous in the eighth round and Nick Green in the 10th round. Stephen Fife was a third-round pick in 2008, while Rick Anton went in the eighth round in 2011.

Cron made his debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2014, and Fife has pitched 18 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2012-14.

Kinneberg’s teams have rewritten the record books. Cron shattered the career batting average mark during his three seasons. Jay Brossman holds records for hits, doubles and total bases. Corey Shimada ranks first in the record books for triples, stolen bases, runs scored and walks. Wagner has a school-record 17 career saves.

In 19 seasons as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level, Kinneberg has a record of 503-517. He earned his 400th career victory in the 2009 NCAA tournament with a win over Gonzaga with his 500th career win coming against Nevada on April 25, 2014.

Kinneberg has coached collegiate baseball for 30 years. His teams established school records for victories in a season at UTEP in 1985, Wyoming in 1990 and Utah in 1996.

Kinneberg is in his second stint as head coach for the Utes. During Kinneberg’s first stint as Utah’s head coach in 1996, he led the Utes to

a 30-22 record. His squad tied for third place in the Western Athletic Conference’s Northern Division and three players earned all-WAC honors. Kinneberg returned to the program on Sept. 15, 2004.

Kinneberg has also made his mark on the national scene. In 2010 he served as the head coach of the US National Team that won a silver medal at the FISU World University Championships in Japan.

Kinneberg has done several stints with USA Baseball. He served as the pitching coach in 2007 and 1999. The 2007 pitching staff turned in a 25-12 mark in international competition, and finished with a scant 1.93 earned-run average. Kinneberg also spent several years as director of the organization’s athlete development program.

Prior to joining the Utah staff, Kinneberg worked for the Chicago White Sox organization as a minor league pitching coach.

From 1996 through 2001, Kinneberg was the associate head coach at the University of Arizona. The Wildcats were 124-102 and advanced to an NCAA Regional during Kinneberg’s tenure. He served an assistant baseball coach at Arizona State from 1992 through 1994. During the 1993 and 1994 seasons, Kinneberg helped lead the Sun Devils to back-to-back appearances in the College World Series.

Kinneberg was the head baseball coach at Wyoming from 1986 through 1992. While in charge of the Cowboys’ program, Kinneberg guided his team to the WAC playoffs in five of his seven seasons. In 1990, he earned WAC Coach of the Year honors, leading Wyoming to a 37-18 record. Kinneberg coached 16 All-WAC players while in Laramie.

Kinneberg served as head coach at UTEP in 1985. Prior to that, he was an assistant at UTEP for four seasons.

In addition to his duties with USA Baseball, Kinneberg worked with the Italian Olympic team in 1984, serving as pitching coach.

Kinneberg is a 1980 graduate of Arizona. He played two years with the Wildcats, going 7-4 on the mound with seven saves, including an appearance in the 1979 College World Series. Kinneberg earned a master’s degree from UTEP in 1982.

Kinneberg and his wife Janet reside in Sandy, Utah. They have two children, Joe (14) and David (12).

JASON HAWKINSAssociate Head Coach1st Season at Utah

Jason Hawkins is in his first season as associate head coach for the Utes. Hawkins, who comes to Utah after three years as head assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara, will also serve as the team’s hitting coach.

At UC Santa Barbara, Hawkins implemented and managed the offense, and was responsible for skill development of all facets of the offence, catching and outfield play. UCSB is coming off back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 1991-92. The 2014 team was ranked as high as 10th nationally by Col-legiate Baseball Newspaper. In 2013, the Gauchos earned an NCAA Regional berth for the first time since 2001 and finished tied for second in the Big West Conference.

Under Hawkins, the UCSB offense improved each year statistically in batting average, on-base percentage and stolen bases. The team led the Big West in stolen bases all three years. In 2014, the Gauchos were 21st in the NCAA in stolen bases per game (1.65), and ranked second in the conference in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored, doubles and RBI.

Six offensive players have been drafted out of UCSB over the last three seasons. Utility player Joey Epperson earned first-team All-America honors in 2014. He ranked 14th in the NCAA in on-base percentage and was a 13th-round draft pick. Brandon Trinkwon was a seventh-round selection in 2013 while outfielder Brett Vertigan was drafted in the 10th round in 2012. Vertigan was also an all-region selection. Robby Nesovic was a Freshman All-American in 2013 and the Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year.

Hawkins brings 10 years of experience coaching at the collegiate level to the Utes. Before joining UCSB he was the head coach at Occidental College from 2009-11. In three seasons, he improved Occidental’s record from 16-24 (6-15 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) his first year in 2009 to a 23-16 record in 2011, finishing tied for third in the conference stand-ings with an 18-10 league mark. Occidental led the conference and ranked in the top 10 nationally in stolen bases all three seasons, while Jason Jebbia and Logan Allen both earned all-region honors.

He spent four years as head assistant coach at the University of Redlands as infield and hitting coach and recruiting coordinator. Consistently one of the top teams in the league, Redlands led the SCIAC in batting average every year, setting a new school record in 2008 with a .363 team average. The team was first or second in the conference in fielding percentage and stolen bases three of his four years with the team. Redlands ranked first in the NCAA in double plays per game in 2007, while ranking seventh in the country in stolen bases.

Hawkins also spent two years with the Palm Springs Power in the Southern California Collegiate summer league (2006-07), helping them to back-to-back league titles. He was a pitching coach for the Corvallis Knights in the West Coast Collegiate summer league in 2008. The Knights finished first in the West division and won the WCL championship.

Before joining the college ranks, Hawkins was a head coach at Desert Hot Springs High School in California (1999-2004) and Springfield High School in Oregon (1995-96) and also served as an assistant coach at North Eugene High School in Oregon (1997-98).

Hawkins received a bachelor’s degree in English and history from Western Oregon State in 1995, and earned a master’s in teaching with an emphasis in English from Pacific University in 1998. Hawkins and his wife Angela have two children, eight-year-old Will and seven-year-old Cal.

MIKE CRAWFORDAssistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator7th Season at Utah

Mike Crawford is in his seventh year as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Utah.

During his time with the Utes, Crawford has had seven pitchers drafted, most notably Tyler Wagner, who was a fourth-round pick to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012. Wagner set a school record with 17 saves during his career and was a 2014 all-star in the Florida State League. Utah had three pitchers drafted in 2014 - two-time honorable mention Pac-12 selection Mitch Watrous was an eighth-round selection followed by Nick Green in the 10th round and Tanner Banks in the 18th round. Rick Anton was an eighth-round selection to the Dodgers in 2011 after leading the conference in wins and ranking third in strikeouts in 2011. Brian Budrow and Jordan Whatcott were each drafted in 2009.

The Utes have consistently been towards the top of the league in several pitching categories. Last season, Utah ranked third in the Pac-12 in fewest walks allowed and was second in pickoffs. In 2013, Utah surrendered just 13 home runs to rank second in the league in fewest home runs allowed. The Utes tied for third in the Pac-12 in pickoffs in 2012. Utah led the conference in fewest hits, doubles and home runs allowed in 2011. In 2010, Utah led the conference in fewest walks, hits and home runs allowed. The team finished second in opposing batting average and saves, behind only College World Series participant TCU. Utah set a school record for strikeouts en route to win-ning the MWC Tournament in 2009.

Individually, Watrous finished second in the Pac-12 in batters struck out looking in 2014. Dalton Carroll allowed just 11 walks to rank second in the league. In 2013, Watrous was tied for sixth in the Pac-12 in batters struck out looking. He was tied for fourth in the Pac-12 in fewest earned runs allowed and tied for second in fewest doubles allowed in 2012.

Crawford previously spent two seasons as associate head coach at Yavapai College where the Roughriders were 41-16-1 in 2008. They climbed to as high as No. 9 in the national polls, and won their league with a 30-8 mark. Crawford’s pitching staff was one of six schools in the 13-team league with an earned-run average below 4.00 (3.81). Yavapai was fourth in the conference in strikeouts (393).

From 2002-05, Crawford was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz. He helped the Apaches to a pair of second-place league finishes (2004, 2005), and the 2005 pitching staff had the lowest earned-run average in the conference (2.66). As CC recruiting coordinator, he saw three of his four recruiting classes play for a regional championship. Before that he worked two seasons at Pima College in Tucson, Ariz.

Crawford played at the University of Arizona from 1999-2000. He was a starting pitcher for the Wildcats both years and was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of Week in May, 1999. He graduated from UA in 2001 with a bachelor’s of sci-ence in communication and went on to get his master’s from the United States Sports Academy in 2008.

The Tucson native’s playing career began at Yavapai College as a starting pitcher in 1997-98. In 1998, he was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Pitcher of the Year.

Crawford and his wife, Sarah, have a nine-year-old son, Kolby.

JAY BROSSMANVolunteer Assistant Coach4th Season at Utah

Former four-time all-conference Utah infielder Jay Brossman is in his fourth season on the baseball staff. He is in his first season as the volunteer assistant coach after serving the last two years as the Director of Operations. He also spent a year as a student assistant coach.

Brossman hit .359 over his four-year Utah career from 2004-07. He set school records for hits (307), doubles (69), and total bases (482).

Brossman was selected in the 36th round of the 2007 MLB draft and spent five years in the Los Angeles Angels minor league system. He was a Pioneer League All-Star in 2007. Brossman went as high as Double-A Arkansas in his career before voluntarily retiring due to injuries.

Brossman earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Utah in 2012. He and his wife Jenny have an infant son, Colten.

CONNOR LAMBERTDirector of Baseball Operations1st Season at Utah

Connor Lambert enters his first season as Director of Baseball Operations at Utah.

Lambert comes to Utah from Tacoma Community College, where he spent two seasons as the pitching coach for the Titans. TCC set a new school record for wins in 2014 (39) and at one point had a 27-game win streak with seven-straight shutouts. The Titans were ranked as high as 17th in the Perfect Game JUCO Poll, their highest national ranking ever. TCC also set a school record for wins during his first season on the staff in 2013 (35).

Lambert has spent the past four summers working as a pitching coach for the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League. The Knights were the WCL champions in 2011 and 2013, finishing as runners up in 2012 and 2014. Corval-lis led the league in ERA in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and set a WCL record with 401 strikeouts in 2011. Lambert was the pitching coach for the 2011 and 2012 All-Star games.

Lambert pitched four years at Washington State (2007-10). He made 60 appearances during his playing career with seven starts, going 11-3 during his career on the mound. As a senior team captain, Lambert went 5-1 with two saves and a 3.53 ERA. He earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors as a freshman in 2007 after striking out 10 in a win over Air Force during his first collegiate start. Lambert helped lead WSU to NCAA appearances in 2009 and 2010, pitching in six games during regional competition. He worked as a gradu-ate assistant coach for the Cougars in 2011, serving as the assistant pitching coach and bullpen coach.

Lambert earned a degree in sociology from Washington State in 2010.

TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTER SCIENCES In 2013, the U.’s entertainment arts and engineering program was ranked first in the country. The University’s School of Computing was founded in 1965, and began a pioneering legacy in computer graphics and visualization that continues today. The internationally-recognized Scientific Computing & Imaging Institute is a leader in creating new scientific computing techniques, tools and systems to help solve wide-ranging challenges of human life. The College of Engineering was ranked 57th by U.S. News & World Report in 2014.

MEDICINE University of Utah Health Care was named one of the “100 Great Hospitals in America” in 2013, and in 2012 ranked among the top 10 academic medical centers in the nation for the third year running. The Utah Genome Project is one of several innovative medical research programs at the U. Other notable programs include the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Clinical Neurosciences Center and the Moran Eye Center.

BUSINESS SCHOOL The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program was ranked No. 47 by U.S. News & World Report in 2014, rising 25 spots from the previous year. The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah’s reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the “Conference of Champions.”

Football is 633-442-31 in its 120-year history. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a national force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original “BCS Buster,” Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pittsburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecutive bowl games from 1999-2009, tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history. Utah has finished in the nation’s Top 25 six times, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in 2004. Men’s Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 1998. Utah, which also won national championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine times. The Utes rank in the top 15 in the nation in all-time victories (1,706) and fifth in regular-season conference titles (32). Utah’s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins place it among the top 25 programs. Women’s Gymnastics boasts 10 national championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah is the only school to qualify for all 33 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and has captured the most All-America awards. The Red Rocks also won the school’s first-ever Pac-12 title in 2014. Utah holds

every gymnastics attendance record, averaging more than 11,000 fans a home meet for the past 23 years and over 14,000 over the past five years. In fact, Utah won its fourth NCAA women’s all-sports season attendance title in 2014, averaging 14,376 fans to its home meets. Women’s Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in 1974-75 and ranks in the top 20 in the NCAA in all-time winning percentage (.696). The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982—advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. Utah was the WNIT runner-up in 2013. The Men’s and Women’s Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. Volleyball has participated in 11 of the last 16 NCAA Tournaments with two Sweet 16 finishes. Softball has qualified for the postseason 18 times (13 NCAA) and has five College World Series appearances (four NCAA). Women’s Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament in six of the last 12 years. Baseball won the 2009 Mountain West Conference tournament and claimed two victories at the NCAA Regional. Featuring the 11,000-foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountains to the east, as well as the Oquirrh Mountains and the Great Salt Lake to the west, Salt Lake City is surrounded by majestic views in all directions. Its metro area ranks in the top 50 in the United States with a population of 1.2 million.

LIVING IN SALT LAKE Salt Lake City has been rated one of the top 10 most exciting mid-sized cities and ranks among the nation’s top cities for literacy rate, percentage of high school graduates and percentage of college-educated citizens. Salt Lake is the largest city in the state with 189,314 residents according to 2012 census figures. The ethnic population is the metro area is 35 percent. Salt Lake City has a moderate four-season climate with an average 237 days of sunshine and 15% humidity.

BUSINESS Salt Lake City was ranked as the “No. 5 Best City for the Next Decade” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine in June 2010. In April 2013, Kiplinger’s ranked Salt Lake “Best City for New College Graduates” with 17 percent of its population in their 20s. It was named the third-best big city for jobs and fourth-best city for tech jobs by Forbes Magazine in May 2012. The magazine also recognized Utah as the “Best State for Business and Careers” for the third straight year in December 2012.

OUTDOOR RECREATION Some of the best skiing, fly fishing, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing and river running found anywhere in the world is easily accessible. Seven major ski resorts are within a 30-minute drive from downtown. Salt Lake City’s Cottonwood Canyon was ranked fifth and Park City fourth in USA Today’s Best Ski Destination poll in December 2013. Other honors include “one of the top 10 mountain-biking cities in North America” by Singletracks.com in March 2014 and “America’s best hiking city” by National Geographic in May 2012. Ten national parks are within a day’s drive.

ENTERTAINMENT Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. Salt Lake City was host to the 2002 Winter Olympics. Opening and closing ceremonies and the athletes’ village were on the University of Utah campus. Salt Lake City joins forces with the nearby resort town of Park City to host the annual Sundance Film Festival. Professional sports provide yet another source of entertainment. Professional franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz of the NBA and Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. Other pro franchises are the Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball) and the Utah Grizzlies (hockey).

TRANSPORTATION Salt Lake International Airport, a Delta Airlines and hub, is located just 20 minutes from campus and offers direct flights to 92 U.S. cities. It led the nation in both on-time departures and arrivals for the sixth time in the last 10 years in 2013. TRAX light rail provides access to downtown Salt Lake, the University of Utah, the airport and many of the suburbs.

HEADLINEUTAH BASEBALL SMITH’S BALLPARK

The University of Utah plays in perhaps one of the most beautiful settings in the nation. Nestled in downtown Salt Lake City, but with sprawling views of the 11,000-foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountain range, is Smith’s Ballpark.

Smith’s features seating that curves towards the playing field to enhance sight lines for every seat. The suite level is one of the closest upper decks in the nation, offering fans the amenities of comfort without sacrificing proximity to the field of play. The outfield is asymmetrical (345 feet down the left-field foul line, 386 to the left-center alley, 420 feet to center field, 373 feet to the right-center alley and a 315 feet down the right field line). Right field has a short home run porch; bullpens are on the field, directly in front of the fans.
