  • O ctober in Vermont is all about fall foliage, ski swaps, Halloween parties and tech events? Gov. Peter Shumlin made it official or the fi st time three years ago with a proclamation. From the 24-hour HackVT to the Woodstock Digital Media Festival, from the Big Maker series at Burlingtons Generator to the Vermont Tech Jam, its Tech Month in Vermont.

The flurry of a tivity has attracted another player: This years Tech Jam is sharing the Sheraton with the International

Conference on the Edges of Innovation for Smarter Cities, organized by the Green Mountain

chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The professional organization for engineers hosts conferences all across the globe; this is its fi st-ever in Vermont.

The IEEE was eager to collaborate with the Tech Jam. Its members will peruse the Tech Jam job fair and expo, which this year includes more than 60 exhibitors, along with a K-12 Student STEM Showcase,

a cardboard pinball art-cade, a recruiting session with some of the areas largest tech employers and demos from IEEE sponsors.

Tech Jam attendees are welcome to sit in on free keynotes and panel discussions at the IEEE event.

The only problem with this collaboration? Itll be difficult o see everything in just two days.

None of these events existed back in January 2008, when a coalition of public- and private-sector partners started the Tech Jam. But word has since gotten out that Vermont is home to a growing number of tech companies that dont alter the states bucolic, rural character, and theyre creating jobs that pay well.

The Jam is an opportunity to learn more about the ideas, entrepreneurs and institutions that are driving that growth. And its not just for job seekers students, parents, community leaders, journalists and elected officials e welcome, too. Theres no better place to get a glimpse of Vermonts future.

You might not be able to see everything, but its worth a try.
