Keynote: Dr. Jeff BordenNeuroscience + Learning Research + Education Technology = Education 3.0Never before has a catch phrase been interjected into educational mission statements around the world with so little understanding of what it means as, “21st Century Learning”. Dr. Borden will showcase what 21st Century teaching and learning means in a practical way, through the lens of what he calls, Education 3.0.

GLEN HILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL, JUNE 22, 2015

Keynote: Dr. Decoteau IrbyThe Ways of GiantsDr. Irby’s “The Ways of Giants” keynote weaves together stories of his childhood in South Carolina and up-to-date educational research to offer an unwavering analysis of the deep-seated racial, cultural, and philosophical confl icts that remain the roots of today’s most pressing educational challenges – low achievement of students of color, opportunity gaps, discipline gaps, cultural confl ict, and other issues related to race, class, and culture in schools.

co-author of the book Make Learning Personal with Kathleen McClaskey.

She is also founder of My eCoach that is an online community of practice for

teachers. Barbara is a Creative Learning Strategist who is a prolific writer,

facilitator, risk-taker, and change agent. Personalize Learning was a finalist for

the Trend Setter Award in 2014 from EdTech Digest. Barbara and Kathleen

continually research how to personalize learning so all learners follow their

passion so they discover their purpose. You can follow Personalize Learning’s

Twitter @plearnchat - For questions, contact [email protected].

Teaching today means teachers are accountable and responsible

for what students learn. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Kids were born wanting to learn but tend to “do school” so they can

get an A or a degree. How can we change this so kids are the ones

responsible for their learning? Barbara will show you how learning

can be personal for each and every learner and you. Expect a virtual

journey visiting classrooms and hearing about stories where teacher

and learner roles changed. She will ask you to imagine what your

school, your classroom and your kids will experience in a

personalized learning environment.

UDL 101

Dig deeper into the foundations of Universal Design for Learning, using student information to redesign lessons, and useful tools and websites to aid in expanding student engagement, representation, action, and expression. At each stage, work time will be provided to apply the concepts to the classroom.

Participants should bring their own laptop.

Understanding Autistic Neurology

This class is divided into two sessions. Participants will attend both sessions following the keynote (8:30-9:45).

Reaching and Teaching Students with Autism: Bridging Neurology(10:00-12:00)The session will provide information about who students with autism are, as learners. Grounded in current brain research yet practical in nature, this will help “turn the teacher on” as participants as they receive an understand-ing of the neurological set up of students with autism and ideas for how to bridge their neurology to provide access to their own skills/knowledge as well as the curriculum.

Fundamentals of Autism in the Classroom (12:45-3:00)The session will provide new staff as well as experienced staff with a general overview of Autism and effective strategies to support students with Autism throughout the school routine. Specific learning needs including communication, social, cognitive, sensory processing and neurological movement will be discussed. Opportunities to participate in sensitivity activities will be provided. Participants will have usable hands-on strategies to implement in their classroom on the first day.

It’s All About Visuals for Learners with Autism

This class is divided into three sessions. Participants will attend all three sessions.

Let Your Visuals Do the Talking(8:30-10:00)The primary mode of instruction in classrooms is typically verbal. This presents a challenge for students with Autism as their strongest channel for learning is visual. Forgetting to support this strength can result in increased behaviors, sensory dysregulation and difficulty initiating/completing tasks throughout the learning environment. Experience strategies to implement in the classroom to increase visual opportunities for visual learners.

Creating Visuals for Students with Autism (10:00-12:00)Creating visuals for use throughout the daily routine doesn’t have to be stressful. Simple low tech visuals can be very powerful and improve the participation and learning for students with Autism. Apps and programs for visual creation will be presented. Various examples will be provided as well as time to play on your own and ask questions!

Social Stories, Comic Strip Conversations, Power Cards and More!(12:45-3:00)During this session, evidence based practices which address social understanding needs of students with autism, will be presented. Social Stories, Comic Strip Conversations, Power Cards and more will be explained, demonstrated and applied to students the participants are or will be supporting. There will be small group time to develop social supports for students.

Participants should bring their own device.

Lights, Camera, Autism!

This class is divided into two sessions. Participants will attend both sessions.

Video Technology (8:30-12:00)In this session, examples and strategies will be provided for using video technology (iPad, iPod Touch, PowerPoint, Video, etc.) to support neurology, teach new skills, teach others, support inclusion and to enhance the lives and pro-mote competence of individuals with autism and related disorders. The session is based on Kate’s books/DVD’s Lights! Camera! Autism! Using Video Technology to En-hance Lives & Lights, Camera, Autism! 2 Using Video Technology to Support New Behavior.

One Man’s Autism(12:45-3:00)In this session, participants will hear from an adult with autism about supports that assist him to function optimally in the world and how he trains his own staff with videos of each support. Don’t miss this endearing and informative speaker! Time for Q & A will be allowed throughout the presentation.

Participants should bring their own device.

iTunes U and iBooks Author

In this class participants will explore how easy it is to make a unit or a course in iTunes U. With the growing interest in mobile devices (iPads, laptops, etc.) as well as online and blended learning opportunities, creating and customizing content for our learners is essential. This tool makes it possible for your learners to easily access all links, content and materials in one place. Participants will see many examples of what they can do with these tools, and have hands-on time to create and publish a unit, course or book using iTunes U or iBooks Author.

Rethinking Discipline in Schools: Theories and Philosophies as Tools for Change

The objective of “Rethinking Discipline in Schools: Theories and Philosophies as Tools for Change” is to expose school professionals to alternate ways of concep-tualizing and cultivating discipline in schools. The workshop places an emphasis on school contexts where racial, cultural, and ethnic differences make taken-for-granted ideas such as “respect, fairness, and expectations” more complicated than is the case in more homogenous school settings. Specifically, the workshop introduces the central role that theories and philosophical perspectives play in how teachers and leaders address discipline in schools. Through lecture, discussion, and small group activities, participants will explore three paradigms: (a) compliance based, (b) relational-based, and (c) interest-based discipline perspectives. Participants will explore the philosophical underpinnings, practical applications, and related competencies associated with each approach. The presentation uses a critical pedagogical approach that builds from teachers’ experiences, assets, and practices as a basis to develop further knowledge. Participants will leave the workshop with a more expansive understanding of approaches to effectively and responsively engage and address discipline-related problems in schools.

Creating a Math-Rich Learning Environment Using the Workshop Model

The start of a new school year is a perfect time to kick off Math Workshop in your classroom. Have you heard about math workshop but are not sure how to get it up and running? Have you thought a workshop model was just for primary classrooms? Have you been using a reading work-shop model? In this course K-12 participants will learn to personalize mathematics instruction in their elementary or secondary classroom using a Math Workshop Model. Implementing a math workshop benefits both teachers and students. It provides the structure to differentiate and individualize to meet the needs of all learners. In this course participants will work part of the time as a K-12 group focusing on best practices, including alignment with common core standards and readiness for the Badger Exam along with preparing their own mindset for a switch to the workshop model. Participants will focus on the logistics for implementing the Math Workshop--manage-ment, assessment, grouping and structure. Participants will also spend time in break-out sessions (K-5 and 6-12) using simulations and demonstrations specific to elementary and secondary instruction. They will use a framework to create sample lessons and activities within a domain specific to the grade/class they teach. Participants will share and discuss across K-12 as they examine the continuum of instruction across grades.

Participants will have the opportunity to work with their own instructional materials so that when they leave, they will have the start of their first Math Workshop plan to use in the fall. Bring a team or come as an individual to design a math-rich workshop plan that will engage your students.

Teachers should bring teacher math resources such as manuals and supplementary materials. A laptop will be a useful resource for this class.

Using Personal Narrative Analysis to Enhance Cultural Competency

In this workshop, participants will learn how telling and analyzing their own and their students’ personal narratives enhance cultural competency and responsiveness with students in the classroom and their families. Participants will begin by analyzing Dr. Drame’s personal schooling narrative. They will identify and discuss the life events, in-school and out-of-school experiences, school policies, teacher practices, and relationships that shaped her school life, educational outcomes and life trajectory. Participants will then begin writing the story of interaction between their own life events and educational and teaching experiences, which they will share with one another. They will use personal narrative analysis techniques to reflect on their schooling experiences, wants and needs, strengths and shortcomings, significant moments, and key adults that shaped their school lives and outcomes. The storytelling and analysis process will illuminate for par-ticipants the importance of conceptualizing schooling as the “writing of a child’s story”, with key actors who have tremendous influence on a child’s school journey. Partic-ipants will be encouraged to think critically and honestly about their own and others’ stories as a means of reflecting on their role in shaping the life stories of their past, current, and future students.

This workshop is intended for participants who are willing to engage in deeply personal, potentially uncomfortable, self-reflection – the kind of reflection that will compel educators to think deeply and on a daily basis about the power their beliefs, words, and actions (or inactions) have on (re)shaping their students’ lives for better or worse.

Keynote: Barbara BrayLearning is Personal - So What Does That Mean for YOU?Teaching today means teachers are accountable and responsible for what students learn. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Kids were born wanting to learn but tend to “do school” so they can get an A or a degree. How can we change this so kids are the ones responsible for their learning? Barbara will show you how learning can be personal for each and every learner and you.
