Washington DCHere’s why we love gay DC (and you should, too)Welcome to the “gayest city in America” – at least, according to the New York Times and The Advocate. We think they’re absolutely right: Here, the LGBT community is out and proud, celebrating events like Capital Pride every June, as well as hosting a plethora of other LGBT-themed gatherings and festivals throughout the year. That’s because DC is nestled in one of the most LGBT-friendly regions in the country, and with 17 openly gay elected officials, DC enjoys a fabulously gay-friendly city government. Here are just a few more reasons to love the gayest place in America.

You can play with one— or more than one— of DC’s 33 gay sports teams. TeamDC.org/team-links

02 PLAY With BALLS

While the ripples of marriage equality are reverberating across the nation, DC, as home to the Supreme Court, will be ground zero when a marriage equality decision comes from the highest court. Are you planning to be here?

After nearly three years in exile, the DC eagle is back in a new, three-story location full of bears, otters, cubs...and other manly wildlife. Sounds like a new place for Mid-Atlantic Leather parties.

While DC is pretty gay in and of itself, it never hurts to sample the gay meccas nearby, including Philly and New York. In fact, we calculated 20 unique ways to get up to the Big Apple, averaging just about 4 hours—perfect for a weekend trip.

Last year, Minneapolis-St. Paul beat out DC as fittest city in the nation, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. In 2015, DC is stronger than ever, coming in first thanks to a big network of walking and cycling paths, wide sidewalks and, most of all, plenty of parks.

DC: Culturally Queer

A seat of power for over 230 years, Washington, DC, brims with history and culture, much of it related to the experiences and struggles of the LGBT community. So regardless of what you’re “into,” Washington has just the thing for you. Art? Sculpture? Music? Big, pointy objects? It’s all here.

1: Celebrating LGBT History Brush up on your LGBT history with visits to the National Museum of American History, where you’ll find paraphernalia from the hit show Will & Grace, plus a whole slew of LGBT cultural artifacts. Afterward, be sure to stop by the National Women’s History Museum. After all that learning, why not, go ahead and grab a drink at Nellie’s.

2: Queer Art & Film This year’s Fringe! Queer Film and Arts Fest kicks off in November with events in cinemas, art galleries, pop-up venues and basement clubs throughout the city. FringeFilmFest.com

3: Can You Say “Oooh, la, la”? That’s what we’d be saying if we were in Paris, most certainly a setting of at least one of the films in this year’s Reel Affirmations International Film Fest, August 28 - 30, at the Tivoli Theatre. The Fest features documentary, short and feature films from all over the world. ReelAffirmations.org

4: Kink 101 Politicians are kinkier than you think: DC’s annual Mid-Atlantic Leather competition, one of the largest leather gathering on the East Coast, regularly welcomes more than 3,000 kinky compatriots. LeatherWeekend.com

5: Showtunes? Here Are The Experts With over 300 members and more than 60 performances each year, you’re sure to catch a showstopping number (and probably a nice shimmy or two) from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, the largest gay chorus in the country. GMCW.org

Remembrance to Promote EqualityThe United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, located just a few blocks from the Washington Monument and World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, is itself a memorial to more than just the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust, documenting all victims of Nazi persecution including the LGBT community.

Current Exhibit: The “Killing Fields,” 40 Years LaterFour decades after mass violence began in Cambodia, the Museum looks at what happened before, during, and after the atrocities. For the first time since it opened in 1993, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is providing content for the public detailing the mass killings of Cambodians under the Khmer Rouge regime and the attempts to hold the perpetrators accountable. 5 To-Do’s that Won’t Break the Bank

1: the view of the National Mall from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is both stunning and romantic. From that vantage point, you can see the Washington Monument, as well as the Capitol in the distance. Visit early to watch the sun rise over the Capitol dome.

2: DC by Foot, the city’s highest-rated city tours offer pay-what-you-want adventures throughout the city, including to the National Mall, Tidal Basin and Arlington National Cemetery. Food, bike and bus tours are also available. Washington.org/ find-dc-listings/dc-foot

3: Located less than a mile east of the U.S. Capitol and just a block north of Pennsylvania Ave., Eastern Market houses a variety of local vendors peddling delectable wares. On weekends, vendors pitch tents on the sidewalks and offer an array of fabulous items, from colorful soaps and scarves to fresh vegetables.

4: Capital Bikeshare is a fun alternative to walking for out-of-towners who want to explore the city on their own terms. Visitors can purchase a one-day or three-day pass (CapitalBikeShare.com).

5: Need to burn off that big meal from the night before? Then take a run around the Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial. The water and vistas of the city’s monuments are stunning any time of the year. In spring, the area is festooned with pink cherry blossoms.

A Great Gay Getaway

Norfolk PrideFest

A typical Pride includes a parade, and maybe a few floats. In Norfolk, we get a little wet when we celebrate Pride, with a whole fleet of sailboats, yachts, houseboats, kayaks—you name it! Join us for this maritime celebration of LGBT equality June 27, 2015.

Art... and Waffles

Norfolk’s brand-new arts district, known as the Neon District, is “bright, fun, and thoughtful, full of laughter, hidden moments, and waffles,” according to the local news magazine AltDaily. With new restaurants, art galleries, watering holes and more,

get ready to see a side of Norfolk you never thought existed. Granby Street north of Brambleton Avenue to Virginia Beach Boulevard marks the heart of the district. NeonNFK.com

World-Class Cuisine

While you’re here, check out some of our top dining picks: Luna Maya, The Green Onion, Press 626 Café & Wine Bar, Supper (with rooftop dining) and The Mermaid Winery (Virginia’s first and only urban winery). Read more about Norfolk’s unique dining scene at VisitNorfolkToday.com/dining-guide.

Norfolk, Virginia

Home to the largest Naval base in the world, you may think the only thing going for Norfolk is that, well, it’s full of seamen. Think again: with a burgeoning arts district, world-class restaurants, and a raucous, wet Pride festival, you’re in for the time of your life in this cosmopolitan, coastal city. So hightail it by plane, train, bus or automobile (we’re less than five hours away) from your hotel in Washington, DC, down to the heart of Virginia’s Waterfront — we’ll be here waiting for you.

Dynamic, Distinct and Diverse: Arlington, Virginia

Arlington is just a quick ride beneath the sparkling Potomac River via Metro’s notoriously efficient Orange, Blue, Yellow or Silver lines, or an even quicker stroll across the Key Bridge—so close, this modern Northern Virginia county might as well be part of Washington. In fact, it used to be—and still, Arlington forms an integral part of the Washington community, including the region’s burgeoning LGBT scene.

So whether you’re looking to visit D.C. itself—hotels here range from funky to swanky, and average 20 percent less than within the District—or explore this lovely state (Virginia is for lovers, after all), you’re in a prime location. Arlington boasts quick, easy access to the DuPont, Logan Circle and U Street gayborhoods, plus multiple direct routes to the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, where the Capital Pride Fest is held each June.

If you’re in the mood to stay east of the Potomac, Freddie’s Beach Bar and Restaurant, located on the small-but-mighty 23rd Street restaurant strip in Crystal City, offers everything from a fabulous Champagne Sunday Brunch Buffet, to the Saturday night Drag Show (and yes, Karaoke every night).

If you love performing arts but can’t seem to leave your friends at the bar, we’ve got your solution: Synetic Theatre partners with Freddie’s for Pride Nights—$25 gets you access to a pre-show reception at the bar, with happy hour drink pricing and free appetizers! SyneticTheater.org

Nearby Signature Theatre offers their own brand of Pride Nights, with a lively one-hour post-show cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception. Signature-Theatre.org/specialty-nights

Or, if you’re in a more athletic mood, DC Ice Breakers is an LGBT-friendly ice skating social group that meets at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington’s Ballston Common Mall on the third Wednesday night of each month, with a social after at a local restaurant.

Plus, with museums, theaters, monuments and stunning skyline views, Arlington is its own cultural hotbed.

It’s time to check out Arlington, where you can enjoy the best of everything: the excitement of being near the history and power of the Nation’s Capital, plus the convenience, the savings and the sweeping views afforded you when staying just across the Potomac River in Arlington!
