Every once in a while, someone touches a community so deeply that their memory is imprinted on it forever. This is the case with Herman Birnberg, beloved member of the Twin Cities Jewish community, who passed away last month.

Herman was born and raised in St. Paul, and lived his entire life in his home on Mississippi River Blvd. In his professional life, he put the final “s” in Birnberg & Sons, a retail and distribution business that began nearly a century ago by his grandfather.

Herman was one of the most active and dedicated leaders of our JCC over the past 50 years, including serving as Board President from 1988-90 and being honored as a Lifetime Board Member in 2010. A patron of the arts, Herman helped shape the JCC Cultural Arts Department. He was very involved with developing and building the JCC Endowment Funds, establishing the Herman J. Birnberg Fund. He also established the Fannie and Maurice Birnberg Cultural

Arts Fund with his sister and brother-in-law, Eva and Bob Launer. These funds have been instrumental in bringing important Jewish cultural arts experiences, such as the Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival, to the community.

Herman was larger than life, loved by all, and memorable to everyone he met. He was a generous, lively, kind, and fun-loving person devoted to his family. Jokester, world traveler, photographer, art collector, fashion maven, party-giver, and gardener, he brought beauty to everything he touched.

jewish holidays

TU B’SHEVATJANUARY 25

Tu B’Shevat, the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shevat, is a holiday also known

as the “New Year for Trees.” This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from

their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It also relates to the various tithes that are separated from

produce grown in the Holy Land. Tu B’Shevat is celebrated by eating fruit,

particularly those that are described in the Torah as being bountiful in the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives

and dates. Tu B’Shevat is the Israeli Arbor Day. It is celebrated as an ecological

awareness day and trees are planted in celebration. Ecological organizations in

Israel and around the world have adopted the holiday to further environmental

awareness programs.

PURIMMARCH 24

Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It

commemorates a time when the Jewish people, living in Persia, were saved from

the wicked tyrant Haman by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, as told in the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). Purim’s merriments include include carnivals,

costumes, gifts of food and reading the story in synagogue. This year, Purim is

celebrated on Thursday, March 24, the 14th of Adar. Be sure to buy your Hamentashen at the Front Desk and keep an eye open for

costumed staff and children!

PASSOVERAPRIL 23 – 30

FIRST SEDER APRIL 22Pesach, or Passover, is a major Jewish

spring festival commemorating the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. It is

observed for seven days by Reform Jews and Jews living in Israel. Conservative

and Orthodox Jews celebrate the holiday for eight days. Pesach begins on the 15th of Nissan. On this holiday we remember our escape, with Moses as our leader,

from slavery in ancient Egypt. The Pesach celebration takes place in the home. The ritual dinner, which includes the

prohibition of chametz (leaven) and the eating of matzah (unleavened bread) and other symbolic foods, is called a

Seder. It is a time of remembrance and thanksgiving. The traditional book used at the Seder is called the Haggadah. It tells of our history, explains the order of the

Seder and contains fables, songs, stories, rituals and prayers.

Each year the JCC helps provide essential Kosher for Passover food to individuals and families who are not able to afford it. Donations are accepted at the Front Desk, online at stpauljcc.org or by mailing a check. Help ensure Passover for all; donate today. In partnership with Jewish Family Service of St. Paul.

The class will culminate in the creation of personal midrashic art projects reflecting the theme of freedom from oppression, rooted in the retelling of the Exodus story. Years later, Grosnacht re-created that scene in a picture, drawing himself seated in the front chair, the other five empty; he is the only member of his family to have survived the Holocaust.
