2015 SPRING OUTLOOK

2015 SPRING OUTLOOK Playing the toughest schedule in school history during the 2014 sea-son did not stop West Virginia from making improvement. The Mountaineers finished with a 7-6 record, had a 5-4 mark in its third year in the Big 12 Conference, their highest conference finish, and made an appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Fifth-year head coach Dana Holgorsen feels the program is in a strong position, and everyone associated with the Mountaineers is excited and ready for the 2015 spring season to begin. The Mountaineers return 44 letterwinners, including 20 starters and 27 players with at least one game of starting experience. “I think we have 68 scholarship guys on campus right now,” Holgors-en said. “Our numbers are good, and our roster is healthy. We have a lot of returning guys who are pretty fired up and ready to get on with 2015.” As with each spring, every spot on the depth chart is open, and there is plenty of depth for position battles. “The current state of the team is great,” Holgorsen said. “The mental-ity is awesome. There’s a lot of familiar faces. There are a lot of guys who have been here for four or five years and are in a really good place.”

OFFENSE Sixteen lettermen return on offense, including nine starters and 11 players with starting experience from 2014. Three of five starters on the offensive line return, both starting inside receivers and starters at halfback and running back are back. However, the offense has to find replacement in key positions: quarterback, wide receivers and both guard positions.Quarterback Redshirt junior Skyler Howard and redshirt freshman William Crest return from last year with game experience, and freshmen Chris Chuganov and David Sills enrolled at WVU in January, while Austin Hensley redshirt-ed last season. “Right now, Skyler Howard is running with the ones at the quarterback position,” Holgorsen said. “He’s the one who understands what to do. We’ve got three freshman behind him. They all are great looking guys who have loads of potential, but we just have to start coaching them.” Howard replaced an injured Clint Trickett in the Kansas State game and finished the remainder of the season. He completed 56-of-110 passes for 829 yards and eight touchdowns and ran for 140 yards. Crest earned the backup role at the beginning of last season and saw action against Towson but a shoulder injury forced him to medically redshirt. Running Back Redshirt junior Rushel Shell and junior Wendell Smallwood, the team’s top two rushers from last year, return, providing the running attack two solid veterans. Redshirt freshman Donte Thomas-Williams, a much-heralded high school runner from Durham, North Carolina, looks to make his first impres-sion and Elijah Wellman, a redshirt sophomore fullback from last year, is being converted to running back this spring. “We have tons of depth at running back even though we lost some people,” Holgorsen said. “(Rushel) Shell and (Wendell) Smallwood were extremely productive as sophomores. They’re going to keep getting better and better.” “Donte Thomas-Williams looks great. He was a young guy who is talented, and I can’t wait to see what he can do. Elijah Wellman is going to play running back. We feel like we have four guys who can all do a lot.” Shell finished with 788 yards on 176 carries and a team-high seven rushing touchdowns. He ran for a career-high 146 yards and a touchdown at Iowa State and finished with 100 or more yards in three games. He also had 21 catches for 140 yards. Smallwood was just behind Shell with 722 yards on 148 carries and two touchdowns. He had a career-high 132 yards at Oklahoma State and registered 100 or more yards in two games. Smallwood was the WVU’s fourth-leading receiver with 31 catches for 325 yards. At fullback/tight end, Cody Clay returns for his senior season. Darren Arndt was moved from the defensive line, and Michael Ferns, a transfer linebacker from Michigan, is being converted as well. Clay finished with seven catches for 65 yards and is a solid blocker in either the backfield or on the line. Redshirt senior Arndt moved during the offseason and will look to learn the position and add depth. “Tight end-wise, Cody Clay is coming back as a fifth-year senior,” Holgorsen said. “He’s played a lot of ball. We did move Darren Arndt, who’s a fifth-year senior and a really smart guy. He hasn’t played much, but he will give us a body there. We also moved Michael Ferns. He will have to sit be-cause he’s transferring, but he will be able to get a lot of reps in the spring.” Offensive Line Quinton Spain and Mark Glowinski, All-Big 12 performers, are gone from last year. Those spots need to be replaced and depth will have to be built along the entire line. “Offensive line-wise, we have 19 bodies, with 15 here in the spring,” Holgorsen said. “Four more who will be joining us in June. We have three returning starters. We have moved Adam Pankey from left tackle to guard, much like we did Quinton Spain when Spain moved his junior year. Adam looks great there with Tyler Orlosky, both having a lot of experience under RushelSHELL

their belts. Marquis Lucas is a fifth-year returning starter so we have three guys coming back, and we just need guys to step up.” Redshirt junior Orlosky returns at center and redshirt senior Lucas at right tackle. Redshirt junior Pankey, who started last year at left tackle, is being moved to left guard. The three have played in 67 career games and have 46 starts to their credit. Pankey and Orlosky logged in more than 1,100 plays, and Lucas had more than 1,000 plays. Redshirt junior Tony Matteo will battle for the starting spot at right guard with redshirt sophomore Grant Lingafelter. Matteo played in five games last year and started at Iowa State, filling in for an injured Spain, and Lingafelter saw action, playing in five games in a backup role. Redshirt juniors Russell Haughton-James and Sylvester Townes and redshirt freshman Yodny Cajuste will compete at left tackle. Haughton-James has seen action in 24 games and has added solid depth during his career. Redshirt senior Stone Underwood played in four games last season and will compete for time at center, while redshirt sophomore Tyler Tezeno looks to fill the backup role behind Pankey at left guard.Receiver All-American receiver Kevin White and the speedy Mario Alford are gone from last year’s team, having accounted for more than 50 percent of the catches, 58 percent of the yards and 81 percent of the touchdown receptions. “We have big shoes to fill,” Holgorsen said. “If you look at where we were two years ago, when we lost Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin, they were 98 percent of our production. Jordan Thompson, Daikiel Shorts, Ver-non Davis Jr., Shelton Gibson, KJ Myers are guys who have played ball. Devonte Mathis is another guy who has experience. We need two guys on the outside who can stretch the field.” Redshirt sophomore Shelton Gibson, redshirt junior Devonte Mathis and redshirt freshman Lamar Parker will compete at one outside receiver, and redshirt junior Vernon Davis, Mathis and redshirt freshman Ricky Rogers will compete at the other. Gibson played in 12 games last year and finished with four catches for 60 yards, while Davis finished with two catches for 38 yards. Thompson and Shorts started at inside receiver last year. Thompson had his best season at WVU so far, finishing with 49 catches for 598 yards and two touchdowns. Shorts finished with 24 catches for 346 yards and two touchdowns.

Also looking to compete for playing time will be redshirt senior Myers and redshirt freshman Jacky Marcellus. Myers finished with four catches for 15 yards and Marcellus was forced to redshirt after suffering a knee injury during the preseason.

DEFENSE Last season in his first year as the defensive coordinator Tony Gibson saw the group make improvement and become a better overall unit. Two areas where the unit really stood out were in third-down defense and opponent three-and-outs, where it finished No. 9 and No. 15 nationally. There are 25 letterwinners returning, including nine starters and 16 play-ers with starting with experience. In the offseason, the defensive coaching staff added one new member, former Mountaineer defensive assistant Bruce Tall, who will coach the defen-sive line.Defensive Line Kyle Rose and Noble Nwachukwu return as starters, and Christian Brown, Darrien Howard and Eric Kinsey are back with experience. Larry Jefferson enrolled in January after transferring from Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, and Jon Lewis adds to the mix. “Defensive line was the biggest area that we felt we needed to address,” Holgorsen said. “Taking that into consideration, we made tons of improve-ment on defense. The defensive line has to get better this year. The numbers speak for themselves. We have a lot of guys coming back. We also brought back Bruce Tall. He’s coached defensive line at several different stops.” Rose returns as the starter at nose tackle after starting all 13 games last season. He finished with 35 tackles, including 19 solo stops, one tackle for loss and a blocked field goal. Howard played in eight games last season and adds depth. Nwachukwu started all 13 games last year at one end. He finished with 34 tackles, including 21 solo tackles, two sacks, 10 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. Kinsey saw action in eight games and finished with five tackles, including one for loss. Brown moves to the other end after playing in 12 games, including one start in 2014. He finished with 21 tackles, including 13 solo tackles. Jefferson comes to WVU after registering 35 tackles as a sophomore, including 20 un-assisted and three tackles for loss. Lewis played in eight games last season.

Linebacker This is the deepest position for the Mountaineer defense with 10 letterwinners returning, including five with starting experience. “Defensively, I think when you look at the roster with everyone coming back the one thing that stands out is the depth at linebacker,” Holgorsen said. “(Nick) Kwiatkowski has started games, Isaiah Bruce, and Shaq Pet-taway have started games for us. Then you bring back Jared Barber, who comes in and fills the role that (Wes) Tonkery played with as many games as he started, I think we’re at a great spot with the linebackers. It’s going to be fun to see how many of the young guys will step up.” Redshirt senior Kwiatkoski is being moved to Sam after starting at Mike last year. He led the defense with 103 tackles in 2014, including a team-high 71 solo stops, a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss, a sack assist and four pass breakups. He had double figure tackles in four games and had at least one tackle for loss in eight games. Sophomore Xavier Preston, redshirt senior Bruce and redshirt soph-omore Hodari Christian also will compete at Sam. Bruce has played in 37 career games and started 20 and finished with 15 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup last year. Preston played in eight games as a true freshman, and Christian saw limited action. Redshirt senior Petteway returns at Will after playing in all 13 games last season. He was the seventh leading tackler with 39 stops, including 32 unassisted, a sack, four tackles for loss and two pass breakups. Senior Muldrow played in all 13 games in 2014 and started eight and registered 30 tackles, including 23 solo, 1.5 sacks, four tackles for loss and two pass breakups. Redshirt junior Sean Walters and redshirt sophomore Marvin Gross, who redshirted in 2014, give solid support. Redshirt senior Barber returns after sitting out last year after suffering a knee injury against Texas late in 2013. He played in 10 games and started seven in 2012, finishing as the team’s third-leading tackler with 71 tackles, including five tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups. Redshirt sophomore Al-Rasheed Benton and red-shirt junior Justin Arndt saw action in all 13 contests last year and along with redshirt freshman Hunter Brown.

Secondary The secondary should also be a strong area for the Mountaineers as 10 letterwinners, including all five starters return. “Secondary-wise, we have all five guys coming back, and that puts us in a good spot,” Holgorsen said. “Injury-wise, the only things that I have are Daryl Worley and Jarrod Harper, who had shoulder surgery and will miss all spring and be back in June. Those are the only two guys that are out. I think we’re pretty healthy, and I think we’re at a good place with that. Even with Daryl not being there in the spring, with Karl. KJ (Dillon), Dravon (Henry), and (Terrell) Chestnut, those guys have played a lot of football for us and now it’s just about the young guys stepping up and getting them a bunch of reps and seeing who develops as much as they can.” Senior All-Big 12 Conference performer Joseph, redshirt senior Harper and redshirt sophomore Mailk Greaves will compete at bandit safety. Joseph has started all 38 games of his career and was the team’s second-leading tackler last year with 92 tackles, including 62 unassisted stops, 4.5 tackles for loss, a team-leading three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups. He finished with 10 or more tackles in three games and holds the school record for career forced fumbles (8). Harper had offseason shoulder surgery and will be out for the spring. He played in all 13 games last year and finished with 13 tackles, a sack and blocked a punt at Maryland. Greaves saw limited action. Sophomore Henry and junior Jeremy Tyler return at free safety. Henry, who earned freshman All-American honors last year, finished with 45 tack-les, including 36 unassisted, a tackles for loss, two pass breakups and two interceptions, one in which he returned for a touchdown at Oklahoma State. Tyler played in all 13 games last year and finished with nine tackles. Junior Worley is out for the spring after having offseason shoulder sur-gery. Senior Ricky Rumph and redshirt junior Khairi Shariff will hold down one cornerback position during the spring. Worley was the team’s fifth-leading tackler last season with 52 tackles, including 44 solo tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and was tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Rumph contributed 22 tackles and an

interception and Shariff was redshirted. Redshirt seniors Chestnut and Jaylon Myers and redshirt junior Nana Kyeremeh will compete at the other corner position. Chestnut started all 12 games in which he played last season and finished with 35 tackles, in-cluding 25 solo tackles, forced, recovered and returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown against TCU, had an interception and tied for a team high in pass breakups (7). Myers played in 11 games and finished with seven tackles, and Kyeremeh saw limited action, appearing in four games.

SPECIAL TEAMS Redshirt junior kicker Josh Lambert, senior punter Nick O’Toole and senior snapper John DePalma return, giving the Mountaineers a solid special teams unit. Even with guys returning in this area, improvement is the concern for the special teams this spring. “With the specialists, we have all the guys coming back,” Holgorsen said. “Josh Lambert has made a lot of plays for us. Nick O’Toole has been back there a bunch. The most underrated guy of the bunch is John DePalma. No one knows who he is because he never screws up. You find out who the long snapper is when he’s launching the ball over the punter’s head. He’s as consistent of a deep snapper as I have seen. We have a couple young guys in Billy Kinney and Mike Molina who are pushing for a role. I can’t wait to see how that plays out.” Lambert returns after putting up outstanding numbers last year, earning All-Big 12 Conference and All-American honors and was named a national finalist for the Lou Groza Award, signifying the top kicker in the nation. He connected on 30-of-39 field goal attempts last season and hit all 45 extra point attempts. He set the school kick scoring record for points in a season (135) and tied All-American Paul Woodside for most field goals made in a season (30). Lambert also set a mark on the national level setting the NCAA season record for most field goals made of 40 yards or more (16) and tied the season record for most games with multiple field goals made (10). O’Toole returns for his third year as the team’s punter. He finished with 57 punts for 2,383 yards, an average of 41.8 yards per punt with a long of 59 yards. He hit 11 punts of 50 yards or more, placed 24 kicks inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and had 21 punts result in a fair catch. Competing for the kickoff position will be redshirt sophomore kicker Molina and redshirt freshman Kinney. Davis, Thompson, Dillon and Worley could compete to be the team’s punt returner, while Gibson and Smallwood, who held down the kickoff positions during the last half of the 2014 season, will look to solidify their spots. “With the returners, we have a void with Mario (Alford) leaving, he was an All-American guy,” Holgorsen said. “We expect Shelton to take that over. Wendell Smallwood can be a kickoff return guy as well, he’s done that in the past. “With punt return, it might be Vernon Davis, Jordan Thompson or Daryl Worley back there, it might be KJ Dillon back there, it may be one of the young guys who we recruited. We have all spring, and we will see who steps up and can be that other guy.” 2015 Schedule As it is every year, the schedule will be tough. The Mountaineers open the season with non-conference home games against Georgia Southern who finished with nine wins last season, 2014 FCS playoff participant Liberty and bowl participant and border rival, Maryland. This marks the fourth year of the competition in the Big 12 Confer-ence with Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech all coming to Morgantown this year, and the Mountaineers travelling to Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas State, Kansas and TCU.
