CAPTIONS IN 1, 2, 3It really is that simple to write captions. You will learn the steps to write a caption that captures the real story in the photo.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA You will learn about camera settings, including the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO, how and when to use aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode and manual mode, lenses and composition.

LITTLE THINGSOne of the best ways to take your yearbook from good to great is to pay attention to the little things: folio, table of contents, index, and reference pages. Look at ways to incorporate your theme design into all of these essential elements.

LIGHTING THE SCENEYou will learn about using available light inside and outside. Also, you will learn about fl ash photography using on-camera and off-camera fl ash.

MORE THAN A DANCEDo you fi nd that you’re ONLY covering dances, homecoming and the school play in your student life section? Learn about a variety of topics for and methods of coverage, as well as questions to ask your staff to ensure that your student life section is about more than just a dance.

SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY You will learn about the gear you need to bring the viewer into the heart of the action, the camera settings that allow you to stop motion and achieve tack sharp focus and compositional techniques you can use to tell the story of what is happening in the game.

PHOTOGRAPHYCURRICULUMNew for 2015! Designed for the photographer who wants a complete overview of photography from beginning to advanced. Start out in getting to know your camera for beginners and quickly progress through lighting and sports photography giving you a range of information for all levels of photography students. Advisers, need help teaching photography? Come see how we can take a beginning photographer on day one and turn them into a photog by day two!

THEME WORKEach yearbook staff will be paired with one of our workshop staff to help you create and develop your theme for 2016. YEARBOOK STAFF #1 JOB It’s NOT to record and preserve the history of the year. It’s to sell the book. In-depth look at our business practices, social media push, sales, gimmicks, senior ad nights (we routinely make $5,000+ in four hours), the need for a budget, and more.

IT’S NOT JUST BLACK & WHITEColor and type, and away we go. Picking colors is not the easiest job. Use color theory when making design choices to enhance your layouts. Then move on to the font selections. Learn what fonts really say and choose wisely. This class will help you make big decisions for your 2016 book that will have a huge impact in a subtle way.

50 WAYS TO TELL A STORYMods. Sidebars. Alternative Story Forms. Whatever you call them, they are a great way to expand your publication’s coverage, play with design and explore unique forms of storytelling. If you’re stuck in a picture and quote rut, this session will give you some new ideas.

BREAK IT DOWN (EDITOR-IN-CHIEF AND ADVISERS ONLY)At the beginning of the year, there’s a lot to know. Look at how you can train your staff while simultaneously producing the pages for your fi rst deadline.

GREAT DOESN’T HAPPEN ON THE FIRST TRYEver wonder how some yearbooks end up looking like professional magazines? It doesn’t happen on the fi rst try. Learn the process of taking design from disastrous to divine.

HEADLINESIt’s not just about writing headlines, it is also about designing them. How to make headlines that say something and design them so they mean something.
