Wardroom 1, Eric Ravilious(1903-1942). 1941.Lithograph,28 by 30 cm. THE FINE ARTSOCIETY,LONDON
THE LONDON ORIGINAL PRINT FAIR is celebrating its thirtiethanniversary this year. Established in 1985 with just sixteen dealers, theevent now enjoys the attendance of fifty of the world’s leading printpublishers, galleries and dealers. This year the old-master contingent isstrengthened by the return of Hill-Stone (New York) and theinclusion of first time exhibitor August Laube (Zurich). Works for salewill encompass woodcuts from the time of Dürer, later old-masterprints, twentieth-century movements and contemporary editionsemploying current techniques and processes.
In past years the fair has displayed museum loan exhibitions fromvenerable institutions such as the Ashmolean and Rembrandthuis. The loan exhibition this time will comprise thirty print highlightsfrom the Royal Collection and be housed in gallery 2. Sheets bymasters such as Raphael and Canaletto will hang with historical andtopographical prints and work by members of the royal familyincluding Queen Victoria. While the magnificent collection ofdrawings housed in Windsor Castle (since 1830s) is widely known toscholars and the public, prints belonging to the Royal Collection donot enjoy quite the same recognition. Printed works have beenconsistently collected since the seventeenth century and now numberin excess of 100,000 sheets.
A programme of lectures, talks and events will run in parallel with thefair. Martin Clayton, Royal Collection Trust’s Head Curator of Printsand Drawings, will talk on the loan exhibition while artist Anita Kleinwill discuss and demonstrate the processes of relief printing. Anevening arranged with young print collectors will witness a livescreenprinting for Gavin Turk in collaboration with Jealous Gallery(London) and Enitharmon Editions (London).
