Excellence, discovery, and creativity. These words drive the Philharmonic and inspire me as I embark on my fifth season. I take seriously my responsibility to bring you remarkable music. Not only familiar, tried-and-true music, but music selected to push your emotional boundaries with new, meaningful experiences. Without exception, the 2015-16 lineup delivers concerts you won’t soon forget.

El Pomar Foundation Masterworks is more inspiring than ever and includes Beethoven’s Ninth, Mahler’s Fifth, and an exciting world premiere by composer Larry Alan Smith. Plus, we are pleased to welcome back pianist Conrad Tao for Prokofiev’s Third Concerto.

Philharmonic Pops is geared up for another hit season featuring the music of John Williams in anticipation of the new Star Wars film release, Bugs Bunny

at the Symphony for family fun, and Gershwin’s astounding Rhapsody in Blue. This season has something for everyone.

Vanguard Performances are once again filled with rich and approachable artistic experiences created to intrigue and delight the listener. This unique concert format offers the audience a perspective into the stories behind these musical masterpieces. The season opens with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

Finally, we’re thrilled to announce a special performance of The Music of Pink Floyd, performed with live orchestra on April 2, 2016. It’s a concert rock lovers won’t want to miss, and only subscribers are guaranteed tickets.

Hurry! Philharmonic concerts often sell out, and for this reason I encourage you to

subscribe now.

Scheherazade October 17, 2015 Written and conducted by Thomas Wilson The fable of a woman who uses her gift of storytelling to spare her life and become queen in One Thousand and One Nights inspired Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous symphonic suite. Scheherazade, combines Russian music with the Eastern Orient in an alluring, colorful orchestration with themes of the sea, intrigue, and romance. Explore the story behind Rimsky-Korsakov’s most popular work; the legendary Scheherazade.

An American in ParisMarch 12, 2016Conducted by Josep Caballé-Domenech Written by Thomas Wilson American artists – and the American sound – swept across Paris like a tidal wave in the early 1920s. Musical styles were merged, and a sultry, deeply rhythmic sound arose. Hear quintessential works by Frenchmen Maurice Ravel and Francis Poulenc, alongside George Gershwin’s jaunty An American in Paris.

Wagner: The Tristan EffectApril 23, 2016 A Beyond the Score™ presentation

Josep Caballé-Domenech conductor Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde ushered in a new era from its opening notes. Composers as different from one another as Bruckner and Berg, Mahler and Messiaen, Schoenberg and Strauss, all responded vigorously to this new world of sound and feeling. Wagner declared that his work was “a monument to the loveliest of all dreams, in which, from the first to the last, love shall, for once, find utter redemption.” This Beyond the Score production presents the vivid story of the opera’s creation and its impact on musicians and artists of all kinds, and includes complete performances of the opera’s Prelude and Liebestod, among extensive other orchestral passages from this great opera.
