As Pittsburgh’s premier training Academy for Musical Theater, we are dedicated to celebrating talent, encouraging dreams and helping to develop diverse skills. By providing the finest dance, voice and acting training in a positive, fun-filled class setting, the CLO Academy encourages both an appreciation for musical theater and a well-rounded education.

Affiliated with one of the most respected musical theater organizations in the country, the CLO Academy offers professional quality courses designed to fit the needs of individual students. Three diverse programs - PNC Children’s School, the Student School and the Pre-Professional School - allow every student to find the program that’s right for them. Whether a child dreams of meeting friends who share their love for performing arts or meeting professionals who can help them pursue a career on stage, Pittsburgh CLO is the place where their dreams can come true.

EduCATiOnPittsburgh CLO Academy’s Pre-Professional School boasts a 100% post-secondary education placement record. Alumni have attended prestigious universities such as Boston College, Carnegie Mellon University, The Juilliard School, New York University, Point Park University and the University of Michigan.

PErfOrmAnCEsPittsburgh CLO Academy students have the exclusive opportunity to audition and possibly perform on the Benedum Center stage during the Pittsburgh CLO Summer Season, at the Byham Theater in A Musical Christmas Carol, and in CLO Cabaret shows. Academy students have performed in numerous Pittsburgh CLO Summer Season productions, including Mary Poppins, Gypsy, Ruthless!, A Musica Christmas Carol, 42nd Street, Annie, Footloose, The Sound of Music, Oliver!, Les Misérables, Disney’s High School Musical, The Music Man and Peter Pan .

Catch Me If You CanBased on the real-life story of the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., who, before the age of 19 conned millions of dollars worth of checks and posed as a Pan Am pilot, doctor and legal prosecutor.

The Little Mermaid Jr.In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it’s a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages.

NEW CLASSES!Music All Around Us: With the aid of percussion and rhythmic instruments, this class will explore the many concepts of rhythm as they appear to us in everyday life. Using imagination and creativity, we will establish parallels between our art forms while developing stronger musicality and rhythmic sense.

Music Theater Acting Styles: This class curriculum is designed to enhance your knowledge of the diverse acting styles needed for the broad spectrum that is musical theater. Learn to better understand heightened styles ranging from classic shows such as Guys and Dolls to contemporary offerings such as Rent .

Contemporary Dance: Incorporating the technical foundations of ballet, jazz and modern dance, this class will expose you to the current trends and artistry used in today’s dance world. Better understand the benefits of having an emotional and passionate connection to your performance.

Introduction to Dance Composition: Interested in Choreography? This class will introduce aspiring choreographers to the basic foundations of dance making. Learn the skills needed to compose your own unique dances for both the commercial and concert stage. Students will better understand shape, dynamics, space, intent, structure and flow of movement. As a result, students will become more aware of the overall aesthetics of dance.

Introduction to Direction: Interested in Directing? Better understand the tools needed to direct a production. Students will understand the responsibilities of the Director including overall vision, preparation, concept, scene by scene breakdown, casting, character development, blocking, language, style, cohesiveness and much more. As a result, students will also develop stronger acting skills.

Performance art is an expressive tool for teaching social skills, body language and the mechanics of social interactions. The CLO Academy’s adaptive musical theater program combines fun activities with experienced faculty in a non-therapeutic environment.

Our PrOfEssiOnAL fACiLiTiEs ArE sAfE And ACCEssiBLEPittsburgh CLO Academy is on the 8th Floor of Penn Avenue Place at 130 CLO Academy Way, between Penn Avenue and Fort Duquesne Blvd. Upon arrival, students are greeted and assisted by the Academy Security Monitor. This monitor ensures a safe entry into the building for all students.

CLAssrOOm suPPOrTLed by a staff of qualified and experienced teachers, students join advanced Academy students in an integrated environment that enables them to explore emotions through acting and music. Personal Therapeutic Staff Support is welcomed and encouraged.

PArEnTs’ LOunGEIn addition to our rehearsal studios, Pittsburgh CLO Academy houses a comfortable waiting area with free wifi. Parents are welcome to stay and take a moment for themselves or return at the end of class.

frEE PArKinGStudents and parents in the New Horizons Program can park at the ALCO Parking Garage located on 6th and Penn Avenue. Tickets are validated by the Academy security monitor.

dirECTiOns And PArKinGThe CLO Academy is located on the 8th floor of Penn Avenue Place at 130 CLO Academy Way between Penn Avenue and Fort Duquesne Boulevard, across the street from Fifth Avenue Place. On weeknights after 4pm, students and parents can park at the ALCO parking garage at 6th and Penn (across from Heinz Hall) for $3. Parking tickets are validated by the Academy’s security guard.

PriVATE LEssOnsPrivate lessons have special restrictions. Students will receive a contract upon acceptance into private instruction. All private voice and piano students who are enrolled in additional classes at the CLO Academy will receive a special $150 discount each semester on Voice or Piano. Only 1 discount can be applied. Call 412-281-2234 to schedule a lesson time or for more information.

ALL Private Lesson Students:1. Must call to schedule a lesson day and time. 412-281-2234 .2 . Once a lesson time has been approved by the instructor, the student must register

imPOrTAnT infOrmATiOn And POLiCiEs• Class sizes are limited. Advanced registration ensures enrollment. Tuition and fees

are due at the time of registration. Registration payments may be made with a check, cash, MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover card. Registration fees and tuition are non-refundable unless the class is cancelled, in which case tuition will be refunded in full.

• Installment payments must be paid by a debit or credit card only. Subsequent payments are automatically deducted on the 1st of the month.

• If you wish to receive a monthly paper invoice, a one-time $20 administrative fee will be added to your first payment.

• Students will not be allowed to attend a class without completed paperwork and payment.

• The first two weeks of class are used for level placement. If you are unsure of where to place your child, please contact Principal Patty Maloney at 412-281-2234 or [email protected] for guidance.

• Schedule, instructors and prices are subject to change.

TuiTiOn PAYmEnTA minimum of the registration fee plus 25% of the total tuition must be paid at the time of registration. The remaining balance will be due according to the payment plan selected. Students whose accounts are past due will not be allowed to register for class until the account is made current or payment arrangements are made.

sChOLArshiP AudiTiOns - Saturday, August 8Available to students ages 8-18 attending the PNC Children’s and/or Pre-Professional SchoolThe Pittsburgh CLO Academy awards scholarships every year in honor of past Pittsburgh CLO Richard Rodgers Award recipients. In addition, the Academy awards a scholarship every year in honor of the Academy’s founder, Charles Gray, as well as the William A. Maffie scholarship. Work-Study is required for all scholarships of 75% or more.

finAnCiAL Aid dEAdLinE - Saturday, August 8Any interested CLO Academy student who meets the income guidelines and submits a completed application packet by the due date will be considered for financial aid assistance. Financial Aid can only be applied to the PNC Children’s School, Student School or Pre-Professional School classes. Financial Aid cannot be combined with any Academy Scholarships (including, but not limited to, Mini Star Scholarships and Merit Based Scholarships).

Scholarship & Financial Aid Restrictions:• If a scholarship or financial aid is awarded, the maximum discount available to be applied toward

any production class such as MT Production or All-Academy Musical is 25%.• Scholarships & financial aid cannot be applied to private lessons, workshops, master classes, etc.• Multiple class discounts do not apply to students who receive financial aid or a scholarship.• PNC Children’s School students are only eligible for scholarships if they previously completed one

full year of CLO Academy training and/or a CLO Academy Summer Camp.
