Hi Everyone,

Now that Spring has sprung and in many areas of the Country, riding season will be coming soon if it hasn’t already, it is time to tend to our trusty machine and make sure it is ready for riding. To help us complete our checkup there is a trusty acronym that makes this process easy. As a reminder here it is: T-CLOCK. Each letter reminds us to check different parts of the bike and here is the list.

T = Tires and Wheels – Make sure your tires are in good shape. If the bike has been sitting for a time make sure you check the sidewalls for cracks. This is easiest done with a flashlight. If you have wheels with spokes check them for tightness.

C = Controls - Make sure you levers work easily. Check all your hoses for cracks or leaks. Make sure your throttle works smoothly.

L = Lights – Check all your lights to make sure none of the bulbs are burned out. While the lights are on it is a good time to make sure none of you lenses are cracked or broken. The most important light to check is your head light. Since we can’t turn this off the only way it does not work is if it has burned out.

O = Oil – Check to make sure your level is where it should be and there are no leaks. If the bike has been sitting, it might be a good idea to change the oil.

C = Chassis – This step is often overlooked and should be done at least once a year. We should look at our frame and make sure there are no cracks or problems Our suspension is al very important and we should look at the front forks to make sure the seals are not leaking. The rear shock on the Wing is an air shock so make sure the pressure is set correctly. If our bike has a belt or chain check the tightness and do a thorough inspection.

K = Kickstand – Check them out and make sure the side stand is working properly and the proper indicators are still functioning. If you have a center stand try it out and make sure it works O.K.

Now that our bikes have been thoroughly checked ENJOY THE RIDE!

Dreaming of SummerBy Chrysa Keenon

For three years, I have been participating in plays and musicals at the Pulse Opera House. It is a beautiful and historic place, it is the oldest Opera House in Indiana, and it is conveniently located in Warren, Indiana. It is about a twenty minute ride to the theater from Huntington. Not only are they doing great shows this summer, the owners have generously allowed us a special showing of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream! For those of you who don’t know what the show is about, here is the synopsis from the Pulse’s website:

“Theseus, the Duke of Athens, is preparing for his marriage to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, A courtier seeks the Duke’s intervention because his daughter, Hermia, will not agree to his choice of Demetrius as a husband: she’s in love with Lysander. The Duke tells Hermia to obey her father, or either die or accept a life as a nun in Diana’s temple. Lysander and Hermia plan to elope, and they tell Helena, who is in love with Demetrius, but he hates her and loves Hermia. The lovers run away from Athens but get lost in the woods. They are followed by Demetrius, and then by Helena, who has told him of their intentions.

Oberon, king of the fairies, who lives in the woods, has quarreled with his queen, Titania, over an Indian boy she refuses to give him. Oberon overhears Helena and Demetrius arguing and sends his mischievous servant, Puck, to get a flower whose juice has the power to make people fall in love with the first creature they see when the juice is placed on their eyelids while asleep. He instructs Puck to put some drops on Demetrius’ eyes. Mistaking the Athenian he seeks, Puck puts the flower juice on the eyes of the sleeping Lysander so that when he is woken by Helena he immediately falls in love with her and rejects Hermia.

Some artisans are rehearsing a play about the tragic love-story of Pyramus and Thisbe to present before Theseus on his wedding day. Bottom, the weaver, is to play the lover, Pyramus, while Flute, the bellows-mender, is to play Thisbe. The others play the parts of the Moon, the Wall and the Lion and they are directed by Quince, the carpenter. Puck overhears their rehearsals in the wood and he plays a trick on them by giving Bottom an ass’s head which frightens the others away. Bottom is lured towards the sleeping Titania whom Oberon has treated with the flower juice. On waking, she falls in love with the ass and entertains him with her fairies, but when Bottom falls asleep beside her, Oberon restores Titania’s sight and wakes her. She is appalled at the sight of what she has been in love with and is reunited with Oberon.

Puck removes the ass’s head and Bottom returns to Athens and rejoins his friends as they prepare to perform their play. Meanwhile the lovers’ arguments tire them out as they chase one another through the woods and when

Demetrius rests, Oberon puts magic juice on his eyes so that both he and Lysander pursue Helena until the four lovers fall asleep, exhausted. Puck puts juice on Lysander’s eyes before the lovers are woken by Theseus and Hippolyta and their dawn hunting party. Happily reunited to each other, Lysander with Hermia, Demetrius with Helena, they agree to share the Duke’s wedding day. The rustics perform the play of Pyramus and Thisbe before the wedding guests. As the three couples retire Puck and the fairies return to bless the palace and its people.”

This will be on the schedule for Wednesday evening. The price of admission is $15. The phone number the theater can be reached at is 260-357-7017. The website is www.pulseoperahouse.org .

Chapter Webmaster: Eric Larson [email protected] 517-646-0256

From Your Chapter Director Welcome to March and hopefully Spring will be just around the corner now. Regardless of the fact that we’ve had a milder winter, Chris and I picked a great time to head out to Florida when the coldest days of the winter occurred just as we were leaving town. I have to say the weather down south was pretty decent. But the nicest part is seeing so much sunshine. It was great to have the sunroof open in the Acadia and to put on a pair of shorts and to just be outside soaking up the rays. And seeing motorcyclists out on the road in Florida taking advantage of another nice day to ride, well that just increased my appetite for some nice weather back in Michigan to get our motorcycles back out on the road. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope we too can soon take our motorcycles out of storage and go for that ride we’ve all been longing to take this winter.

As always happens this time of year, we are gearing back up into planning mode for the summer season that lies just ahead of us There are a lot of ideas stacking up for the coming months. Hopefully you are loading up your calendars with lots of fun GWTA things to do. One that is coming up really quickly is the Region F Spring Fling to be held April 22-24 at Shipshewana, Indiana. With a little luck we will be able to ride to that event on two wheels comfortably and safely. I encourage each of you to make plans to attend, including registering to Bob and Kim Davis soon and getting your hotel reservation made before March 18th. I know this will be a fun weekend with friends and I know we will be ready to get out of the house to go do some fun stuff.

Another event that needs to be on your radar for planning is the Michigan State Rally to be held in Evart, Michigan June 22-26. While the Michigan State Rally application won’t be finalized and available until early March, you may want to get your motel reservation in if you are not camping and the deadline for making that reservation is June 7th. For those of you camping, no advance reservations are necessary and you will just pay your camping fee when you check in for the rally.

The last event you need be thinking about is Gold Rush in Huntington, Indiana July 10-14. If you have not made lodging reservations, now is the time to be thinking about that. I am aware of several Michigan members who have arranged for lodging at the Quality Inn. Details regarding Gold Rush are still in the works and soon as information is passed on from our Regional Directors, it will be made available to you.

So as we all take those last breaths of cold winter air, let’s be positively thinking ahead to all the fun stuff that’s going to occur once the weather changes and then let’s all jump in and have a blast doing all that our organization has to offer.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at an upcoming GWTA event.

Misc. Business; a suggestion by Thomas and Barbara Ongstad was made to attend the model railroad exhibit in Holly, Michigan and or Detroit along with a lunch stop at Fuddruckers Restaurant in Flint, as a possible Chapter outing. There was some interest but it was also noted that March is a very busy month. Information will be gathered for those who think it might make a fun outing.

Quarter Cup winner this month was Eric Larson and the 50/50 Winners were Thomas & Barbara Ongstad, with Gene Hoover pulling the winning ticket. The pot was worth $15.00. Congratulations!

The next Chapter meeting will be Tuesday, Mar. 8th, 2016, at the Flap Jack Restaurant on Waverly Rd. Dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the business meeting will follow.

A Chapter Director to lead GWTA Michigan Chapter A in the fun activities that we all enjoy participating in. The job is easy to do and will ensure that the legacy of our chapter continues. It entails a few monthly communications via email and planning a short monthly business meeting to keep the members up to date. The job comes with many willing volunteers who are always ready to lend a hand to keep the chapter fun going. Exact details of the job can be obtained by contacting the outgoing Chapter Director who has stepped up to fill the State Director’s position and who will gladly coach a newcomer to the position as necessary.

BITS AND PIECES:Random thoughts from your newsletter editor.

March marches in? Or did it slip in quiet as a Lamb? No matter how this month presented itself, we all know that our thoughts are on RIDING SEASON! Like kids counting down until the last day of school, motorcycle riders are chomping at the bit to get that motorcycle out of the garage, start it up and RIDE! Who cares if the wind is gusting at 50 miles per hour, and the temperatures are in the low 40’s, we are on the WING, we are RIDING! SPRING is only 20 days away, it’s close enough, the salt is off the road, the snow is...oh wait, this is Michigan, we are coming out of the back side of an El Nino` Winter...bubble burst time...sigh.

Whatever March brings to you be it that first invigorating ride in all that fresh air, or gazing out the window as the snowplow goes by, please be sure you and your ride are ready. Do your own “tune-up” before you climb on your bike. Make sure your gear is in as good a shape as the tires on your bike, because faulty riding gear, like worn out tires, just aren’t going to keep you safe. How’s the helmet holding up? How about your protective riding gear? Is it time for a new pair of boots, gloves, rain suit or jacket? Have the things in your first aid kit expired? Make sure the body you are putting in that protective gear is in good shape too. We are all so used to keeping our bikes in tip top condition that we forget that our bodies have been laid up all winter and they could use a good tune up too. Make safety a priority this year, be safe, be aware and stay healthy.

Sandy

‘C’ How We Have Fun…

By: Judy Schaefer, Region C Director

It was a pleasure to attend two of our State’s recent annual events: the Nebraska ‘Fall Follies’ and the Illinois ‘Spring Break-Out’.

Nebraska held their event in November near Omaha at the massive Mahoney State Park which has a beautiful rustic lodge, lots of cabins, two campgrounds, walking trails, and a water park. The huge meeting hall has a complete kitchen, a wall of windows looking out on the park, and a wrap-around deck…very nice. Peggy Hakanson, NE State Director, and her crew pulled out all the stops for this all-in-one-day event that was a non-stop food fest. I’ve never eaten so much good food in one day!

They should have warned me not to have breakfast (or to eat anything the day before) because immediately following their morning State meeting, they brought out huge pans of warm cinnamon rolls. Yum! Rounds of Dirty Bingo followed… a good activity to work off the rolls. But, soon it was time for lunch and they came out with yard-long sandwiches filled with lots of good stuff, a dozen salads, and too many desserts! The afternoon was filled with Nebraska football, visiting with NE and some IA members, and more games. There was a giant auction which surely brought in a good amount for their coffers. Before I knew it, it was dinnertime…a BBQ, no less, with all the fixings!

Nebraska topped off the event with a great evening of humorous ‘roasts’ of each other and celebrated their newly-selected State Family of the Year, Dave & Denise Telford (NE-A). Congratulations to the Telford’s as they travel on to Region C. Thank you, Nebraska, for a great time! I am forewarned of your next State event…sure to be filled with excessive amounts of good food, fun, and friendship!

Illinois’ annual March outing helps get everyone excited for another great year of riding with TA friends. Well attended by IL members and several IA friends, too, this event was held at the Ramada Inn North in Springfield where Dave & Gladys Berkemeier, IL State Directors, served as hosts. The hotel’s large meeting room and adjacent balcony with comfy couches made for a very nice and laid back weekend.

Phil and I arrived on Friday afternoon, and it’s been a tradition for a bunch of us to go for fish somewhere that evening before gathering back at the hotel to meet other TA friends. Saturday morning’s kick-off is when the new IL Family of the Year is revealed, and Nick, Stephanie, and Lance Brem (IL-B) have been chosen to represent this state at the 2016 Region C Rally. Congratulations to them!

The rest of the day was filled with Dirty Bingo, the annual Domino Tournament, auctions for the state and the new FOY, and a banquet dinner. Did we have a good time…no…we had a great time, as usual! Following coffee & donuts on Sunday morning, the Berkemeier’s held the State business meeting. My brief report on some National news and the upcoming Region C Rally also included announcing the appointment of Jim & Jamie Caffrey (IL-H) as the incoming State Directors who will take the reigns in September. Dave & Gladys will retire at the Golden Wheels campout where they will have served Illinois for four years. I can’t say enough great things about these two…they have done an excellent job! We can only hope that after a little respite they will be ready to serve TA in another capacity down the line.

Here are some pictures from the Nebraska & Illinois events for your enjoyment:

20 March/April 2016

If you live to the north, and get a winter with snow and cold temperatures, you might not be thinking of getting your bike out in January. Here in Toronto, Canada, we have the largest Motorcycle Show in North America right after New Year’s! We are indeed thinking and dreaming of riding.

This show has over 1000 bikes on display, as many as 45,000 motorcyclists attending, and over 100 clubs and charity rides represented. Dozens of dealers, scores of vendors with all kinds of deals on helmets, jackets and other gear. It is Huge!Of course, for over twenty years, GWTA has had an excellent presence at this show!

This year we expanded the booth to 1000 square feet to include a couple of member’s bikes, a couple of trikes plus several other activities and displays. Honda stepped up to help out with three 10’ X10’ canopies, tables and some handouts of Honda bags. We set up a seminar room under two canopies with a large projection screen, sound system and seating. We offered free Group Riding and Co Rider seminars on an alternating schedule. This attracted a number of riders to sit in our booth for a while and were quite impressed on how we could offer these benefits to the membership. The big hit, as always is the Gold Wing pick up demo. A new Gold Wing also on loan from Honda was laid down on its side attracting a large crowd every time. We would first discuss the problem and various methods to return it to an upright position. With a larger and larger audience drawing around the fallen bike, we would then demonstrate how to put it back on its wheels. This demo was somewhat continuous, with our members giving the demo about 80 - 100 times per day for the three days of the show.

Under one canopy, we had a special table built by one of our members, Ken Duff. A barrel and a square table top attached with a large GWTA logo embedded within it served as place to talk to riders interested in GWTA. Handouts with Chapter contact information were available at this table.

With almost 40 GWTA members from five chapters volunteering to be on the daily schedule, each wearing their Chapter shirts with a unique colour for each Chapter, was indeed, very impressive. This booth arrangement and the associated activities made us the most popular club booth in the building. Several other clubs and vendors came by every day of the show to see what the excitement was all about.

This booth really exemplifies what GWTA is all about. All the members from various Chapters coming together with so much comradery. How we are very safety orientated with seminars, demonstrating our knowledge and professionalism. How we are an active force in the motorcycling community with our membership. This creates such a positive image for sponsors, dealers, insurance companies and more. Something we all benefit from.

Our members really enjoyed being part of such a great event, especially those with their bikes proudly on display for thousands to see and comment on.I would like to thank all our members that planned the event, transported everything to and from the show, helped with set up and tear down and spent a good deal of time in the booth greeting show attendees

Now if only the snow would disappear soon, we can get out for some planned rides. It’s going to be a great season!
