EDITORIALDear Readers,We are pleased to present to you the first Congress Magazine of the Convention Bureau Braunschweig (CBBS). Braunschweig and congresses – two things that go together well. As a lively and internati-onal location, Braunschweig offers all the opportunities of a large city with the added advantages of short distances and personal service. Braunschweig excels as an

innovative research location, as demonstra-ted by the figures compiled by Eurostat. The region is in second place in Europe in terms of the amount it spends on research and de-velopment measured against gross domestic product, while in Germany, the Lion City actually occupies first place. Braunschweig also claims the top position in the national rankings for the proportion of scientists with respect to the total number of employed people. It has closely-meshed networks with research and business organisations, both national and international, creating an innovation platform and securing the location‘s future potential. It is thanks to these powerful associations and the breadth of activity at the 27 research institutes and around 250 high-tech companies located here that Braunschweig is such an excellent location for a wide range of congress fields.

Moreover, Braunschweig offers all the other aspects that determine a good congress setting: the central locations of the conven-tion venues and hotels enable highly-varied supporting programmes. For instance, visi-tors can discover the city‘s diverse culture and rich history or they can visit one of the scientific and research institutes located here. Afterwards, your guests can make their way back to the city centre in a few minutes for dinner or wind down and relax on a raft ride on the Oker river.

We would be very glad to be able to wel-come you to Braunschweig for your next meeting! The CBBS team will be happy to support you in planning, holding and follo-wing-up your next event.

Yours, Gerold Leppa

Director of Economic Affairs for the City of Braunschweig

A major theme for Braunschweig: According to the EU Statistical Office, the Lion City has the highest proportion of peo-ple employed in research and development in Germany. The amount it spends in this field measured against the gross domestic product makes it one of the leading regions in the whole of Europe. An ideal framework for holding your meeting or congress – and there is much more besides.

We should point out from the start that science and research have a long tradition in Braunschweig. The TU Braunschweig is the oldest technical university in Germany, as well as one of the oldest universities of all. Carl-Friedrich Gauß, the famous mathematician, physicist and astronomer and a son of the city studied here in the late eighteenth century. And naturally a lot has happened since then. Today more than 15,000 people work and conduct research

in the Lion City in around 250 high-tech companies and 27 research institutes, which include such famous names as Siemens and Fujitsu, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, the National Metrology Insti-tute of Germany (PTB) and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). Over the course of your meeting or congress, you are cordially invited to take a look behind the scenes of these organisations.

Did you know that Braunschweig has an ‘emil’? This is a public transport bus that is powered solely by electricity, and the TU also played a major role in the development of its inductive charging technology; the TU also played a major role in digital terrestrial television, which was introduced in 2002 in Berlin. It is the interdisciplinary cooperations and networks between the science and bu-siness worlds that make this possible – they are the breeding ground for such outstan-

ding innovations. Clusters represent another central aspect of Braunschweig‘s economic and scientific landscape. They cover such areas as system biology, pharmaceutical process engineering, nano-measuring tech-nology, city of the future, people-oriented aircraft and, above all, mobility and trans-port – not least thanks to Volkswagen being close by. Europe‘s leading mobility compe-tence centre is developing at the Research Airport of Braunschweig with its intermodal transport portfolio. Braunschweig is the place to go for mobility/cars, aviation, rail transport, certification and electromobility. This innovative output generates enormous potential for knowledge transfer and makes Braunschweig an outstanding venue locati-on for your meetings and congresses.

Mens sana in corpore sano – in a healthy body lives a healthy mind. But what are the threats to which our health is exposed on a daily basis, what is the best way for us to protect ourselves against them, and how healthy is the soil on which our nutrition flourishes? Braunschweig provides answers to these and many other questions. At the forefront are the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, the Julius Kühn Institute, the Federal Research Institute for Cultiva-ted Plants, and the Technical University of Braunschweig.

There are over 17,000 bacteria cultures registered at the DSMZ, the German Collec-tion of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures. It is the world‘s biggest collection of microbial life and is located in Braunschweig. Together with the Technical University and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, a working group from the DSMZ is pursuing the goal of predicting what happens when a bacterium infects a cell. The work is simpli-fied not only by its thematic links but also by geographical proximity – the participa-ting institutes are located only a few minu-tes apart. This is something that not only benefits researchers but also allows you and the guests at your events to discover more interesting facts in a short space of time.

The Julius Kühn Institute – the Federal Re-search Institute for Cultivated Plants – and the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute – the Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, are concerned with searching for and researching into soil

microorganisms. Both establishments grew out of institutions that have a long tradition in Braunschweig: the Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA) and the Federal Agricultural Research Centre. Here too, the Lion City has played a pioneering role. Researchers at the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, the Helm-holtz Centre for Infection Research and the Julius Kühn Institute were among the first in the world to successfully cleanse soil DMA of dirt and study soil microorganisms with the aid of genetic fingerprint techniques. In this way, antibiotic resistance genes in agri-cultural soils are being detected right here in Braunschweig.

The joint system biology centre BRICS (Braunschweig Integrated Centre forSystems Biology) arose from a co-operation between the Technical University and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in conjunction with theTranslation Alliance in Lower Saxony (TRAIN). BRICS has set itself the task of researching into the dynamics and regulation of complex biological sys-tems. In the TRAIN alliance with other insti-tutions, work is being conducted into driving on developments in active agents and vaccines. You and your congress participants can find out, live and first-hand, how this all works, where the interconnections are and who else is participating in these projects.

MEDICINE AND HEALTH

For the good of health – Braunschweig‘s research institutes give their all on a daily basis to protect our cells from bacteria.

CONGRESS VENUESTo ensure that your congress is a wonderful experience for all concerned and something that neither you nor your guests will ever forget, it needs to be held at a suitable venue. Braunschweig has a wide selection of excellently-equipped conference facilities to choose from, ranging from traditional to modern.

For example, you can welcome your guests at the ‘Dornse’, the great room of the his-toric Old Town Hall, one of the oldest town halls in all of Germany. Or you can hold your conference at the Stadthalle, with its mo-dern equipment and variable room concept. All of our event venues offer a customi-sed service, to ensure that everything is perfectly coordinated to suit the needs of your event. And best of all, the majority of our venues are only a few minutes‘ walk away from the city centre. Which lets you move on without delay into your supporting programme.

Would you prefer a venue that is somewhat different to the kind you normally encoun-ter? Then why not choose the Jakob-Keme-nate for a conference with a difference. You and your guests will enjoy working in this

modernised listed building from the thir-teenth century, with its corroded steel fa-cade, copious glass, and bare masonry that have a charm all of their own. Or you can hold your congress in the historic Machine hall in the Steigenberger Parkhotel – with its open ceiling construction and exposed ancient murals. The benefit of this venue is that your first-class conference hotel is in the same building. Even Braunschweig‘s sporting location number one – the Ein-tracht stadium in the Hamburger Strasse – can be used as a meeting venue. Another regional highlight is the world heritage site of Rammelsberg in Goslar. You could, for example, greet your guests in the Tscher-per-Stollen and experience an underground congress - in an absolutely unique setting.

Many more well-equipped hotels are wai-ting for you and your congress participants, with minimal transfer times between the accommodation and the venue.

Hold your event in a location which buzzes with life and experience the inspirational boost that this brings to your work.

also mean that it is not easy to get

SUPPORT PROGRAMME AND AFTER WORK

Insights into research and development, a chance to look back at Braunschweig‘s historical sides, wide-ranging cultural offers and lots of little adventures: Braunschweig‘s supporting programme is full of surprises – perfect for rounding-off your congress and creating memories that last. For examp-le, you can go on a discovery tour of the National Metrology Institute of Germany, the place where time is ‘made’, and glance over the shoulders of the researchers, or you can visit the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and obtain fascinating insights into researching pathogenic agents.

In the city centre, Braunschweig Cathedral, Burg Dankwarderode and the reconstruc-ted Ducal Palace are waiting for you to discover them, as are many museums, such as the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum – one of the oldest art museums in Europe, with collections of exhibits ranging from ancient times through to the modern age. Naturally, we also offer a wide range of guided tours of the city – classic, extravagant or culinary. If you prefer, a very comfortable way to expe-

rience Braunschweig is by Segway: relaxed and emission-free transport that you can ride from one hotspot to the next.

Of course you could also discover the Lion City interactively. You are invited to join in events such as the Geocaching Rally, the City Adventure Rally or the Resource Olympics.

Are you interested in culture? The State The-atre with its 300-year history and the many other smaller theatres, such as the LOT The-ater, invite you to sample their performan-ces. Events such as the ‘CityJazzNight’ jazz festival, the ‘Theaterformen’ theatre festival, the ‘Braunschweig International Film Festi-val’ and ‘Kultur im Zelt’ (‘Culture in a Tent’) bring high-class entertainment to the city – and into your programme. Braunschweig is also well-equipped to fulfil requests for lavish shopping trips. From small boutiques to major labels, you are sure to find what you are looking for in the Lion City. The Schloss-Arkaden centre alone contains more than 150 stores, with all tastes catered for.

If your conference in Braunschweig takesplace in summer, you will experience the open-air culture of the Lion City at its best: ‘Klassik im Park’, a big picnic in the Bürger-park against the backdrop of classical music played by the State Orchestra, the ‘Raffteich Open Air’ festival, which features stars of rock and pop music, ‘Burgplatz Open Air’, which presents classics from opera and musicals in the open air, and the extremely colourful ‘Holi Festival’ are all awaiting your visit. And if you prefer to simply wind down and relax - no problem. On a raft ride along the Oker, perhaps accompanied by live music and a barbecue, you can let your thoughts drift and the hustle and bustle of the conference will soon be forgotten. The surrounding region also has plenty to offer, with many attractions in the Braunschwei-ger Land, such as the ‘Autostadt’ and the ‘Paläon’, while the Harz region invites you to choose from a range of trips in natural surroundings.

In addition to great entertainment, there is also plenty of culinary enjoyment on offer. From premium steaks in the ‘OX’‚ to vegan snacks in the ‘Brodocz’ and from Braun-schweig‘s Wolters beer to exclusive gin in the ‘Vielharmonie’ – the Lion City knows very well how to take care of its guests.

HOTELS IN BRAUNSCHWEIG A congress brings people together and offers them opportunities to gain new knowled-ge in a completely new framework. But a congress also means work. Away from home, away from the family, and away from your own four walls. It is then particularly important to be in a place in which you can relax, feel good, and wind down. To know that you are in the best hands.

Braunschweig has more than 46 accommo-dation facilities with a total of around 4,000 beds. You and your congress participants can choose from a range of privately-managed guest houses with a personal atmosphere as well as internationally-renowned hotel chains such as Best Western or Steigen-berger. Stay in the centre of the city and experience Braunschweig's pulsating city life, including a relaxed evening in a local bar or restaurant after work. Or if you prefer the joys of nature, you can stay in green surroundings and wind down from the stres-ses of the day's events at the congress. For those who prefer to keep walking distances as short as possible, there are several hotels in the direct vicinity of the Stadthalle and the central railway station.

THE CONVENTION BUREAU BRAUNSCHWEIGWith a wide range of congress venues, excellent hotels, a variety of cultural offers and very good transport connections, Braunschweig offers all the ingredients of a successful congress. But to ensure the success of your event, it is of course essential that every aspect is just right, from its conceptual development to the detailed and organisational planning phases and on to its faultless implementation. And this is where the Convention Bureau Braunschweig (CBBS) comes in – with a range of ser-vices that leaves no wishes ungranted and supports you throughout the entire process, both before and during the event.

The first stage towards organising a suc-cessful meeting is to find the right location. And that is exactly what we will do for you. We obtain offers from several sources, organise venue inspections and take care of everything else, from catering to technical facilities and many other important con-gress services. So that all you are faced with is the problem of choice – a congress hall or a half-timbered building, a buffet or a gala dinner?

The second important step of organising a successful event naturally concerns the participants. And here, too, you can rely on us. We know the best hotels and we take care of bookings and accreditations.

And to make sure that all your guests are able to make their way quickly and easily from the hotel to the congress venue, we also provide the required mobility service, either with shuttle vehicles or using public transport.

What is always remembered about an event is its setting. And in this regard, Braunschweig has plenty to offer: from the historic sights of the city centre through the varied cultural activities on offer to a wide range of excellent restaurants. We will put together a programme that is customised to your requirements and regardless of whether it is for 5, 50 or 500 participants, it is sure to be an unforgettable experience for all concerned.

Supported by these and many other ser-vices, we have already successfully conduc-ted many notable events – for example the regional Braunschweig competition ‘Jugend musiziert’ (a youth music contest). We have many regular clients who always choose to organise their meetings and conferences, both large and small, with us. We would be very pleased to be able to collaborate with you, too in the not too distant future.
