proud to be a part of your daily routine

While we started out 2014 smack dab in the middle of a

Polar Vortex, the rest of the year was much less chilly. Like

just about every year, we traveled the trade show circuit,

sponsored a wide variety of hands-on seminars and met

a whole lot of friendly dentists and staff along the way.

We’ve also met a lot of clinicians who tell us that our

products help make their daily routines more predictable.

Some in our company might even say that our daily

routine includes figuring out new ways to become a more

helpful part of your daily routine.

We earned some nice accolades in 2014: Dental Advisor’s

Editors’ Choice and Top Sectional Matrix (for the third

year in a row), Reality’s Five Star Award, and Dentistry

Today’s Top 100 Products. Not bad for a company that

originated in the basement of a dental office.

After 18 years in business, we believe a place on a

clinician’s tray is about the best compliment we can

receive as a manufacturer of dental products. Thanks for

being a part of the Garrison family.

Sectional Matrix System

Why use a sectional matrix system for Class IIs ?

Better Contacts, Virtually ZERO Flash!

• Operator-friendly retaining system

• Naturally contoured bands

• Anatomically correct contacts

• Contacts at the height of contour

• Rings produce optimal tooth separation for excellent, tight contacts

• Fails to restore proximal anatomy

• Thin contact at the marginal ridge

• Large food trap below

• Increased likelihood of fracture, occlusal interference, recurrent caries and periodontal disease

vs.

Tofflemire-style System

Tight, predictable Flash-Free Contacts

Excellent clinical results with PROVEN

The Composi-Tight® 3D XR Soft-Face™ Sectional Matrix Ring is an

ultra-retentive matrix ring designed for use with short or malpositioned

teeth, including areas between the canine and first bicuspid.

The orange Soft-Face™ 3D Ring provides maximum ease of placement

and adaptation to a wide variety of tooth anatomies while reducing flash.

Upgrade to rings that won’t “Spring-Off”!

Dynamic Tip Angle™combined with retentive tip extensions adapts interproximally for an unsurpassed, tenacious grip!

Soft-Face™ tines hug matrix bands to the tooth for flash-free convenience!

Randall G. Cohen, DDSMorrisville, PA, USA

“The learning curve on the other rings was that they sometimes would not stay where you put them because their contact points on the tooth surface were small and few. With these grippers, the rings hold steady the first time you seat them into position. Accordingly, MOD’s are no more difficult than MO’s or DO’s. Congratulations on an excellent product!”

TECHNIQUE:Class II Restorations utilizing Composi-TightÂŽ 3D XR

Insert wedge. For optimal contour, gingival seal and tooth separation, use Garrison’s WedgeWands™ or other Garrison wedge. Keep a finger on the matrix band to prevent the wedge from dislodging the band during insertion. Wedge firmly, a high viscosity resin packed into the preparation may displace the band away from the tooth.

Place contoured sectional matrix band. Select a matrix band that most closely approximates the occlusogingival height of the tooth. Over-approximate tooth curvature buccolingually by rolling the contoured band with your fingers. This will help keep the matrix band ends from interfering with the Soft-Face™ 3D/3DXR Ring placement. Theband should be oriented with the convex edge towards the gingival margin of the tooth.

Place FenderWedge prior to preparation to pre-separate and protect the adjacent tooth. Prepare tooth with conservative Class II preparation. Once the preparation is complete, remove the FenderWedge and place your matrix band.

Apply the Soft-Face™ 3D/3DXR Ring by spreading it with the Composi-Tight® Ring Placement forceps and placing it over the wedge. NOTE: For secure gripping of ring tips to surface, dry teeth thoroughly before placement.

Use your preferred etching, disinfecting and bonding technique following manufacturer’s instructions. Apply your preferred composite resin following manufacturer’s instructions.

Contour and polish the restoration.Remove the ring, wedge and band. Because of the superior contact achieved with Composi-Tight® 3D/3DXR, removal of the band may require a Composi-Tight® Matrix Forceps (model #BFA-1) or hemostat. This is especially true with particular bonding agents that preferentially bond to metal. For easier removal choose Slick Bands™.

*Stacking of Rings & MOD RestorationsBoth the Composi-Tight® 3D Soft-Face™ (orange tip) and Composi-Tight® 3DXR Soft-Face™ Ring (blue tip) are angled to allow stacking of rings for performing M.O.D.s and multiple-tooth restorations. Either ring may be stacked over the other, and in any combination.

Cure-through sectional matrix systemThis system combines transparent and translucent materials to allow for trans-enamel polymerization.

Now clinicians can apply their curing light from both the buccal and lingual surfaces without interference

from metal matrix bands and opaque separator rings. This easily allows for proper curing of deeper

proximal boxes and is also beneficial for clinicians bulk-filling Class II restorations.

Rings:The separator ring is a special modification of the very popular Soft-Face™ 3D ring. It features the same tooth hugging soft silicone tip design that virtually eliminates buccal and lingual flash. A 3D XR (non-transparent) ring is included in the kit for extra retention on difficult dentition.

Bands:Composi-Tight 3D Clear matrix bands are .0020” thin and come in three heights. The bands have tabs on the gingival edge to facilitate easier placement and are contoured in three dimensions. Additionally, the curvature is enhanced at the marginal ridge to provide improved anatomy.

Unquestionably Smooth.

• Enables easy and safe adjustment for zirconia and lithium disilicate.

• Proprietary diamond impregnated polisher reduces possibility of chipping and microfracturing.

• Provides an unparalleled smoothly polished occlusal surface, eliminating abrasiveness to opposing dentition.

• Prevents over-heating that could lead to premature failure.

• Eliminates the need for polishing paste, reducing overall cost per procedure.

The eZr™ Polishing System provides

a processing solution that not only

produces a high gloss finish on

zirconia, but increases the physical

stability through polishing. Highly

polished stable zirconia surfaces are

now attainable. The polishers have

a long life, and in combination with

a high material removal rate, allow

for an economic and fast processing

system to get to glossy in seconds,

without polishing paste.

“eZr™ is the only polishing system that actually polishes zirconia smooth. Research tells us that zirconia is not over-abrasive to opposing dentition so long as it is polished to smooth. With all the other kits, there are still visible bur marks after polishing. The eZr™ system is the only one I’ve tried that polishes zirconia to smooth!”

onlays, veneers and crowns.

Start by gross adjusting and contouring using the blue coarse grit grinders. Use the flat end taper for occlusal/labial/lingual/buccal surfaces and the disc

for interproximal surfaces.

Use the green medium grit polishers for smoothing and pre-polishing. Use the point for the occlusal grooves, the cup for labial/lingual/buccal, and the disc for

interproximal surfaces.

Use the orange fine grit polishers for high gloss polishing. Use the point for the occlusal grooves, the cup for labial/lingual/buccal, and the disc for

interproximal surfaces.

Wedge WandsÂŽ Clinical Tip

“Leave the handles on your Wedge Wands. When I first received Wedge Wands I used them according to the box instructions and removed the handle after placement. After about five applications, the light finally came on—why am I twisting off a perfectly acceptable handle that I can use to manipulate the wedge during the entire procedure? It drives in the wedge with significant force, can be used to snug it in tighter once the ring separates the teeth and then remove

it when finished without ever having to pass an instrument back and forth with my assistant. In addition to limiting the transfer of instruments, look at how well the Wedge Wand retracts the cheek in these images. The DO on #5 is not any big trick, but look at the MO on #2. I don’t even bend the wedge—just drive it straight in. Great gingival seal, retraction and access plus it even holds my cotton roll in place. What other wedge can do all that for you?”

Stays put. Back-out is prevented by the textured wedge body and gradual side taper.

Gentle touch. The ski-like tip prevents the wedge from digging into the rubber dam or papilla during insertion, and the soft radius edges prevent trauma during insertion and removal.

Snug fit. Adapts naturally to the contours of the teeth with the pliant plastic material.

A sure seal. Every angle and plane is a continuous curve to mimic interproximal anatomy and eliminate flat spots.

Longer is better. Matrix ring placement is easier, wedge back-out is prevented, and fewer wedge sizes are needed with WedgeWands’ and G-Wedge’s more gradual increase in width.

Interproximal Tooth ShieldsPre-separate and Protect

FenderWedge prevents damage to the adjacent tooth and gingiva that can occur during Class II preparations.

FenderWedge is a combination of a steel plate and a plastic wedge. Inserted into the interproximal space, it protects the tissue and separates the teeth, thus simplifying the application of a matrix.

“Even those with steady hands and stellar

Real Easy. Real Tight. Real Fast!

Retainerless Tofflemire-style System

• Real Easy: The reels pop into the handle without any fuss! Press the reel into the handle and retract the grippers to lock the reel in place. Plus, if you use the regular matrices (yellow hubs) they can be easily pushed through contacts.

• Real Tight: Tight contacts and excellent contour are what Reel Matrix is all about. These thin matrices are pre-contoured in three dimensions and when combined with anatomical wedges and separator rings, the result is amazingly tight contacts at the natural height of contour.

• Real Fast: Pre-loaded reels mean you can just lock them in and go. The retainerless design greatly speeds up quadrant work while improving visibility and patient comfort. Add a 3D XR separator ring (page 4) and you virtually eliminate buccal and lingual flash.

Margin Elevation Technique using Reel MatrixThe margin elevation technique allows proper isolation and elevation of deep margin areas prior to restoring with an indirect partial coverage restoration (onlay). It can also be used for a first increment on direct, wide embrasure composites. The use of the Reel Matrix margin elevation band allows proper adaptation and seal of these deep areas so that a composite margin elevation can be performed. Step 1: Use the margin elevation technique shown in the case below. Step 2: Complete the restoration with either an onlay or large direct restoration.

1

Pre-op X-ray. Shows the margin location for #2 subgingivally prior to elevation.

2

Seat the margin elevation band subgingivally. The narrowness of the matrix will allow it to slide subgingivally and seal the margin efficiently.

3

Seal the dentin and elevate the deep margin with restorative composite.

4Remove the matrix and finish with a #12 blade to remove any flash. The deep margin has been relocated 1-2 mm supra-gingival for predictable isolation and delivery of an indirect bonded restoration.

5Post-op X-ray. Shows the completed margin elevation prior to final restoration being completed.

The narrow design of the matrix shape has the ideal contour for adapting to and elevating deep margin areas. The light weight of the Reel Matrix spool allows it to stay in place during the procedure without tipping or falling off as would a heavily weighted traditional retainer.

Traditional band with narrow ‘funnel’.

Proprietary Right Curve™

design:The increased curvature of the all-new

Right-Curve matrix bandproduces outstanding gingival seal and reaches over to adjacent teeth easier for broader, deeper contacts. This creates a significantly increased funnel-shaped cone when wrapped around a tooth. It’s the right choice

for many restorations.

Reaches over to the adjacent tooth more easily to help you create broader, deeper contacts.

Tighter gingival seal is beneficial for all restorations.

Margin Elevation Band

A margin elevation matrix will give you the best gingival adaptation and contour for the deep margin

areas. The margin elevation matrix is trimmed in height to allow improved

adaptation to deep margin areas.

Slick Bands™ Tofflemire-style MatricesNon-stick technology developed by Garrison: Modern bonding agents can adhere to uncoated matrix bands – Slick Bands slide right out.

Introducing the new Margin Elevation Band!

• Extremely wide preps are simplified.

• Improved visibility for core buildups.

The deep margin elevation technique is a useful non-surgical approach to treating deep localized margins.

Place a rubber dam. As with many dental procedures, aspiration of small parts is a valid concern.

1. Wedge both the mesial and distal sides of the tooth to be restored to produce enough separation to allow the placement of the matrix when contact is not broken.

2. Slip the appropriate size of Pinch Matrix around the tooth, removing the wedges just before fully seating the matrix.

3. Pinch the tensioning loop with your fingers to tighten—don’t over-tighten the matrix or it will be difficult to get proper contact.

4. Apply a wedge to seal the gingival margin(s).

5. For best results: Use a Garrison separator ring to reduce buccal and lingual flash and to provide the extra separation needed to get the best contacts.

6. Use a contact forming instrument to help broaden the contact. (PerForm™ page 27)

7. Apply your preferred bonding and composite materials according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

8. Remove the wedges.

9. For metal, grip the release tab with a Matrix Forceps (page 28) and pull vertically. Alternatively, an explorer can be used but care should be taken not to inadvertently cause trauma when the release tab pulls loose. For Blue View, cut with scissors.

10. Remove the loosened matrix. If the contact is too tight to allow for matrix removal with the handle use a Matrix Forceps (page 28) to remove it.

“Pinch Matrices are a terrific supplement to the Garrison ring and matrix systems. They are awesome for creating contacts on both mesial and

distal without using other full bands that use holders which can get in the way and may pinch lips. They are versatile enough for fillings or build ups and work well with rings. Pinch Matrices are a real time saver and help make large restorations simple.”

Clinical TipAfter using your preferred bonding procedure, place the restorative material into the preparation in advance of using the cervical matrix.

Place the cervical edge

of the matrix against the tooth first as shown in Fig. 1.

While pressing the matrix firmly against the tooth, roll the matrix onto the tooth (Fig. 2). Excess material will be expressed from the occlusal edge of the matrix rather than subgingivally, greatly simplifying clean up.

Cure directly through the matrix.

• Use the white Gingival Retractor to provide access and isolation, if the restoration is very close to the gingiva or even slightly sub-gingival.

• Prepare the tooth.

• Select the appropriate matrix for the tooth being restored.

• Snap the matrix stem into the Placement Instrument.

• The Placement Instrument is designed to hold the matrix in either a perpendicular position (fig. 1) or an inline position (fig. 2) to provide the most convenient application angle.

• Apply your preferred restorative materials according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Use the Blue View Transparent Cervical Matrix to compress and subsequently shape the final composite increment, keeping it pressed against the restoration while light curing. The air-inhibited layer will be eliminated.

• Minimal finishing and polishing will complete the restoration.

Blue View VariStripItem Description Qty.VS02 VariStrip 50

Curved Form: Provides the optimum curvature and band height for virtually every anterior restoration.

Blue Tint: Provides contrast between matrix and tooth structure without compromising composite polymerization.

Our Most Popular Anterior Matrix

VS02

The Blue View VariStrip™ is a revolutionary contoured anterior

matrix providing the optimum curvature and band height for

virtually every anterior restoration. The 0.0020” thin plastic

anatomical strip is tapered from one end to the other. You can

place the strip interproximally and then slide it until the tooth

height is perfectly matched. The pre-contouring easily recreates

the occluso-gingival anatomy, avoiding flat embrasures.

How can you produce a natural curvature for anterior composites and eliminate black triangles?

Check out Garrison’s curved “Varistrips” to recreate the natural interproximal anatomy for anterior teeth.

– Helps avoid incorrect flat embrasures, black triangles and food traps that can be caused by old-fashioned straight mylars.

– No need for wedges on subgingival fillings, as the contours naturally close off the apical aspects for you.

– Excellent for class IVs, diastema closures, etc.

– Variable height allows you to slide each strip in until it precisely matches the tooth height before cutting off excess.

– The blue tint does not affect cure, but ends the annoyance of losing clear strips on patient bibs or bracket tables.

– Blue View VariStrips—a must-have super-simple product for every dental office.

Precise Placement: The tips have a 75-degree angle with an occlusal-gingival orientation, providing a more appropriate placement angle than cotton forceps. The petite, carbide tips allow the matrix to be grasped at its upper edge to prevent distortion of the interproximal area of the band.

Unbeatable Grip: The tungsten carbide tips provide exceptional grip and tactile control for tough access cases.

Updated grip to easily spread rings with less hand fatigue, even over large molars.
