Tarak Chandra Das: An Unsung Hero of Indian AnthropologyAuthored By

Dr. Abhijit Guha, Professor, Department of Anthropology, Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, West Bengal, India. The book tells the untold story of a pioneering anthropologist in India who at the best remained not more than a conscientious teacher and meticulous ethnographer and at worst simply forgotten. Each chapter of the book unfolds a plethora of thrilling facts and enchanting analyses of the contributions of T.C.Das which traces the trajectory of Das’ works through time without missing its historical context. The book sets an example of serious biographical research in Indian Anthropology which is yet to develop into an established specialization.

Foreword by Dr. Hari Mohan Mathur, Council for Social Development, New Delhi, India.

This slim volume is a work of dedicated scholarship - an outcome of Abhijit Guha’s genuine concern to save Tarak Chandra Das from near oblivion, and get him his due recognition. It is a pioneering effort in re-writing the history of Indian anthropology and remembering those long forgotten heroes, who laid the foundation on which anthropology that we teach, research and practice today is built. It is an outstanding contribution to the history of anthropology in India, probably the first of its kind. I highly recommend it as a work of general interest for all students, and as a compulsory reading for those engaged in teaching and research on Indian Anthropology.

New Horizons of Human DevelopmentEdited By

Dr. Ananta Kumar Giri is on the faculty of the Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, India While there is a renewed engagement with the discourse of development in our present-day world both in their critical as well as valorized manifestations, very rarely have some of the fundamental challenges as well as pathways of renewal been explored. This book addresses these gaps in our knowledge and research by bringing together essays on topics such as self-development, co-learning, co-responsibility, aesthetic ethics, creativity, conviviality, human security, peace and social quality etc. together. New Horizons of Human Development is not only a pioneering but also a monumental effort in our field of thinking, practice and collaborative imagination which raises some of these vital and deeper questions of human development and then overflows to an epochal and epic quest for rethinking and regenerating life, culture, society, polity and our fragile humanity. This book will be an enriching co-traveler for all friends from a wide range of paths of exploration in the academy--sociology, anthropology, philosophy, literature, development studies, cultural studies and religious studies--as well as across it—activists, citizens and seeking souls of the world.

ReviewsDevelopment initially narrowly understood as “economic” development graduated to “social” development incorporating cultural and political dimensions. New Horizons of Human Development edited by Ananta Kumar Giri broadens the scope of the concept of human development which hinges on human welfare. It is an index of the constant quest of the editor who challenges the status-quo in generating and disseminating knowledge.Professor T.K. Oommen, Emeritus Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. This is a very stimulating volume urging us to look beyond modernization theory and the prevailing development discourse. Coming from different perspectives and disciplines, the authors of the book agree on the necessity of finding a new approach to development, which locates the human being in the centre of attention. Anyone interested in an alternative future should read this book.Professsor Boike Rehbein, Humboldt University, Berlin. This volume is an inspiring collection of chapters written by researchers from different countries. Thus, “a festival of dialogues” to which the volume is to take its reader, begins with a festival of intellectual traditions, the variety of which is manifested by its authors themselves. The volume is really very dialogical in itself: the reader is present at an implicit philosophic dialogue between the contributors. Eventually, in a sense, this volume is very optimistic: it confirms and reaffirms the fundamental role of creativity and cultural variability in the contemporary world. Professsor Dmitri M. Bondarenko, Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences & Russian State University for the Humanities.

Cooperative Entrepreneurship in Action: A Conceptual FrameworkAuthored By

Dr. K. Ravichandran, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Cooperation, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu, India.

Dr. S. Nakkiran, Professor of Cooperatives, Jimma University, Ambo College, Ambo, Ethiopia.Cooperatives are one of the important economic organizations, generate a huge employment potential and diversified its activities covering almost all possible sectors, touching the needs of the producers as well as the consumers across the world.Entrepreneurship literature rarely mentioned about the relationship between entrepreneurship and cooperative development. In the cooperative literatures too very little has been addressed about the synergy between entrepreneurial behaviour and the degree of economic success or the failure of cooperatives. Without entrepreneurial behavior, cooperatives cannot succeed and they will not even be established. The books available at present in the field of cooperation and cooperatives have not detailed the entrepreneurial behavior of cooperatives and their stake holders. In short, there is a virtual vacuum in the literatures about cooperative entrepreneurship. In this context, this book attempts to provide a theoretical background on cooperatives in Indian context and will serve as base for further research into this field of study. This book is useful for students, teachers, and trainers in Cooperation, Rural Development, and Third Sector Enterprises.

Integrated Cooperative Development Project: Impact and SustainabilityAuthored By

Dr. K. Ravichandran, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Cooperation, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu, India. The Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP) was introduced by National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) during 1985-86. This project has been in operation in majority of the districts in India. However, very few attempts have been made to study the impact of this project. The present work analyzed the impact of ICDP and the sustainability of the outcome of the project in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. The project was introduced in Theni district during the year 2005-06 with the total outlay of Rs. 987.73 lakhs and the project was completed on 31 March 2011. This study found that ICDP’s monetary and non-monetary interventions have created both tangible and intangible impact on the business profile of cooperative societies in this district. As compare to pre-project period with post-project period, the latter witnessed many cooperatives in the district which have become viable entities and could retain their image among the members and other stakeholders through enhanced service, general facelift and inclusive approach. The books available at present in the field of Cooperation and Cooperatives have not detailed about this Pan India Project of National Cooperative Development Corporation, New Delhi. This book has been written keeping in mind the requirements of both the researchers and the officials with examples for office note/resolutions. This book will serve as a base for further research into the field of Cooperation, Rural Development & Third Sector Enterprises at college/university/training institute level.

Labour Force in Informal EconomyAuthored By

Dr. Gurnam Virk, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India

Dr. D.P. Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Social Work, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India.Majority of the workforce in India are in the informal sector. This sector has a myriad of less visible and even invisible workers such as the agriculture workers, construction workers, house based workers, barbers, cobblers, rag pickers, vendors, head-loaders, cart pullers, rickshaw pullers, and cart drivers living at the survivalist end of the spectrum. They have very fragile incomes, poor working and living conditions and, by and large, remain excluded by the law and all sorts of social protection mechanisms.Besides providing conceptual framework on Informal Sector, this book presents various aspects like the migration, socio economic profile, health, welfare, and work environment of the rickshaw pullers who, by and large, remain on the margins of the process of development. As these workers are socially and economically vulnerable and deprived due to lack of education, skills and awareness, the book has brought out ways and means via which their quality of life can be improved. The book, thus, suggests various social work intervention strategies and recommendations for their overall development. This book will prove very useful for researchers, students and educators in field of Informal Economy, Social Policy and Social Work practice.

Dr. P. Balamurugan, Assistant Professor of Economics, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. The economic reforms initiated in 1991 introduced far-reaching measures, which changed the working and machinery of the economy. Six Essential Steps in Implementing CSRAuthored By

Dr. V.R. Reddy, Professor, Department of Rural Development and Social Work, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Dr. C. Dheeraja, Associate Professor, Center for Social Audit, National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Hyderabad, Telangana.Though there is no dearth of literature on CSR, it is more skewed towards theoretical models. The current book mainly aims at fulfilling two long felt needs – providing sufficient depth for an understanding of various facets of CSR and serving as a blue print in the implementation of CSR. The book adopts ‘handholding and guiding’ approach in helping the student/practitioner in various steps involved in practicing the CSR. It also meant to serve as a guide for corporate houses, corporate managers, corporate staff and field staff involved in planning, execution, monitoring and evaluation of different CSR initiatives. Anecdotes, cartoons and diagrams provided help easy understanding of different concepts, models and practices of CSR. Tables, graphs and diagrams drawn from field experiences serve as blueprints for use in implementing CSR and in preparing the reports. It also presents with tools that can be used in conducting baseline survey, impact assessment, community needs assessment, social satisfaction survey and accounting of CSR.

Cooperative Entrepreneurship in Action: A Conceptual FrameworkAuthored By

Dr. K. Ravichandran, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Cooperation, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu, India.

Dr S. This book is useful for students, teachers, and trainers in Cooperation, Rural Development and Third Sector Enterprises.

MATHEMATICS

Ramanujan’s Contribution: A Technical ReportCompiled By

Dr. M.L. Thivagar, Professor and Chairperson, School of Mathematics, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India. This book provides an introduction to the large expanse of Ramanujan’s work in Number Theory, Analysis, and several other areas of Mathematics. The first chapter discusses about trigonometric sums and Ramanujan’s significant formulae. Ramanujan’s own proof of “P(5m + 4) is divisible by 5” is explained in chapter second. The Ramanujan differential equations in third chapter lead on to the Weierstrass invariants, and from there the final chapter, which provides a full account of elliptic functions as viewed by Ramanujan. Needless to say, we only covered only a very small fraction of Ramanujan’s work. However, after developing a few facts about his work, we equipped to prove many interesting theorems. Our intent here is not to give a rigorous course in analysis but to emphasize the most important ideas about his work and how they interplay with other areas of Mathematics.

Foreword by Dr. George E. Andrews, Evan Pugh University Professor in Mathematics, Penn State University

The relationship of trigonometric sums to elliptic functions and thence to number theory is one of the magical voyages in mathematics. The first two chapters of this book lead us gently into this adventure. Included are Franklin’s wonderful proof of Euler’s pentagonal number theorem and Ramanujan’s own proof that P(5m + 4) is divisible by 5. The book now delves into elliptic functions having established an appropriate background. The Ramanujan differential equations lead on to the Weierstrass invariants, and from there the final chapter, which provides a full account of elliptic functions as viewed by Ramanujan. This chapter begins with a precise and illuminating history of the subject and leads eventually to a variety of results in number theory, such as theorems on sums of squares. I hope everyone opening this book will be enchanted with this venerable but ever young and ever sparkling subject.

PHILOSOPHY

Taxonomy of Angiosperms: Basic Concepts, Molecular Aspects & Future ProspectsAuthored By

Dr. Anupam Dikshit, Professor and Head, Department of Botany, University of Allahabad, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Dr. M.O. Siddiqui, Professor and Head, Department of Botany, Patna University, Patna, Bihar, India.

Mr. Ashutosh Pathak, CSIR-UGC SRF and currently pursuing D.Phil. in Botany, University of Allahabad, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.Taxonomy is the oldest discipline of Botany and basics of all disciplines such as Embryology, Anatomy, Plant Genetics, Economic Botany, Ethno-botany and Plant Physiology etc. Nowadays monotony in the subject of Taxonomy has lead to loss of interest among students. To generate the interest of students and concerned persons, in the present book entitled ‘Taxonomy of Angiosperms: Basic Concepts, Molecular Aspects and Future Prospects’ an earnest attempt has been made to deal comprehensively with the basic concepts, modern aspects and future prospects of angiosperms taxonomy. Latest information has been incorporated in a simpler manner such as International Code of Nomenclature of Algae, Fungi and Plants along with the advances in the Angiosperm Taxonomy viz., Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, Barcode and Phylocode. The untouched and interesting aspects of Taxonomy have also been addressed to unravel the wide area of coverage of Angiosperm Taxonomy along with its multifunctional utility in serving other disciplines of Botany as well as in the urban development and planning. The book is not only useful as a text book for UG and PG courses of most of the Universities but also for competitive examinations, e.g. NET CSIR-UGC etc. and as a basic text for conducting research in different disciplines related to Plant Sciences.

Foreword by Dr. Paramjit Singh, Director, Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata, Government of India

It gives me immense pleasure to write this foreword for the book entitled ‘Taxonomy of Angiosperms: Basic Concepts, Molecular Aspects and Future Prospects’ by Prof. Anupam Dikshit, Late Prof. M.O. Siddiqui and Mr. Ashutosh Pathak. Though in the recent era taxonomy is considered ‘Tax-on-me’, yet it contributes to tax itself and serve all branches of botany with great perseverance and patience as diversity or biodiversity. It is taxing when the treatments to the branch are presented in a complicated manner making it dry and drudgery when the contents are presented in a lucid and simple way, it becomes interesting as has been done in this book on taxonomy.

Eastern Marxism and Other EssaysEdited By

Dr. T.G. Jacob, Freelance Researcher and Writer, and Founding Member of South Asia Study Center, Nilgris, India.

Dr. P. Bandhu, Freelance Researcher and Writer, and Founding Member of South Asia Study Center, Nilgris, India.S.N. Nagarajan, a veteran Marxist scholar and activist, has evolved his own ideas of Marxism as applicable to the Indian conditions. He bases his version of Marxism on progressive and democratic trends within Indian socio-religious philosophy, specifically the social philosophy of Tamil Vaishnavism. On this basis he formulates a critique of Marxist theory and points out lacunae, which according to him are directly responsible for the debacles faced in the construction of socialism in the West as well as in the East. By incorporating traditional ‘Eastern’ wisdom including some of the ideas of Gandhi and Mao into Marxist theory he thinks we have a weapon, an ideological tool, which would help mankind forge a path towards an egalitarian social order that is non-exploitative vis-à-vis nature as well. Hence the term ‘Eastern Marxism’.

Decentralised Convergence Plan: An Alternative DevelopmentAuthored By

Dr. M. Sarumathy, Senior Faculty Member and Head, Centre for Good Governance and Policy Analysis, NIRDPR, Hyderabad, IndiaDecentralised convergence plan is a state of the art analysis of research work. The volume presents the core concept of decentralisation and convergence and its amalgamation in the field. Decentralisation is distribution of power and convergence is centralization of activities. Interestingly, how decentralisation and convergence can go together when conceptual differentiation occurs. It is proved that decentralisation is necessary for local initiations and convergence is essential for bureaucratic institutions. Matching the interest of two institutions is an alternative development. The benchmark achievement of this book is case studies of two gram panchayats. The two village plans spotlighted that how convergence plan facilitated the two villages for having a suitable road map of development with a minimum budget for a maximum achievement. The book will be useful for students, researchers and policy makers in public administration and development field.

Labour Force in Informal EconomyAuthored By

Dr. Gurnam Virk, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India

Dr. D.P. Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Social Work, Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India.Majority of the workforces in India are in the informal sector.

The Tibetan Saga for National LiberationAuthored By

Dr. P. Bandhu, Freelance Researcher and Writer, and Founding Member of South Asia Study Center, Nilgris, India. The book presents a holistics, historical and interdisciplinary view of Tibetan society and Tibet’s status as a dismembered internal colony of China. The economic, political and cultural aspects; environemntal issues; healthcare and educational provisions are all comprehensively dealt with to elucidate this reality. Delving into the historical evolution of The Tibetan nation, the point is made that a once independent Tibet needs freedom and democracy to recuperate from its brutal mauling by Chinese claws and maws. The Tibetan resistance movement is very much alive and autonomy status within the present-day Chinese state is not likely to resolve the issue of Tibet’s occupation and exploitation.
