Vintages: The Shape of Seasons

After a very cold winter, the 2016 growing season had the highest average maximum temperature (23ºC v 21.8ºC avg), earliest flowering (10 days earlier than average) and harvest dates (23 days earlier than average) on record, lowest growing season rainfall (211mm v 348mm avg) and shortest hang time (budburst-harvest; 21 days shorter than average). So, a very dry, warm year with down-the-hill all picked before the end of February and up-the-hill picked by the first week of March - both unprecedented. Quality, following on from the very highly rated 2015, is also excellent.

2016 10X Wines

10X wines are sourced from several vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula and are therefore a regional expression of each variety. These include the Ten Minutes by Tractor Estate vineyards – Judd, McCutcheon, Wallis, Coolart Road and Winebar. We also source grapes from Osborn Vineyard, in the north of the Peninsula in the Tuerong area. Our 10X wines are created as easy drinking examples of what the Mornington Peninsula can produce. They may have been picked from younger vines or at slightly different times to achieve slightly different characteristics and, as a general rule, they see less new oak and spend less time in oak during maturation. 10X wines are released in the year following vintage whereas Estate and Single Vineyard wines are released two years after vintage. The end result is more approachable, more accessible and more immediately rewarding; the wines have a delicious freshness and clarity. So our 10X Pinot Noir and Chardonnay differ from the Estate versions of these varieties in that they are simply wines for different occasions, designed to be drunk more casually, and earlier. Our 10X Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, the Peninsula’s second and third most planted white varieties after Chardonnay, are both made in a traditional style, being barrel fermented and spending time in old French oak barriques.

Our thoughts...One of the criticisms most often levelled at Sauvignon Blanc is that it is all aromatics and little body. This 10X Sauvignon Blanc is not one of those wines. Instead, this is a wine driven by texture and weight, the hint of passionfruit one of the few passing gestures to the usual Sauv norms. What I particularly like is the edge of crème caramel, with that extra richness helped along by slight alcohol warmth and gentle acidity, making for a wine that trades in mouthfeel, not pure aromatic punch, without falling into the flabby trap. Not your usual Sauvignon Blanc, and all the better for it. Best drinking 2017-2022 Andrew Graham [May 2017, commissioned by TMBT]

Our thoughts...From first sniff, this is a quintessential Ten Minutes by Tractor Chardonnay, with flashes of nougat, a drizzle of honey over white peach fruit. Despite the nose suggesting a big wine, this is actually more medium bodied than expected, the back end punctuated by grapefruit acidity, and delivering a wine that is less bombastic and more egalitarian than some of the Estate and Single Vineyard Chardonnay releases while retaining the classic house style. If anything, this will appreciate more time in bottle to grow through the finish. Best drinking 2017-2025 Andrew Graham [May 2017, commissioned by TMBT]

Alcohol13.2% (7.8 standard drinks/750ml bottle)

Production465 dozen :: bottled May 2016 :: screwcap

Our thoughts...One of the great joys of good rosé is about refreshment, and this ripe, Pinot Noir based wine shows that with understated texture and light fruit flavours, drinkability is guaranteed. Very much a wine built around acidity, but overlaid with the strawberries and cream of Pinot Noir fruit, the edges softened by barrel fermentation. It’s dry, delicate and long, with a firm structure that suggests an extra year or so in bottle will further help to give this wine weight and more flesh. Don’t drink it too cold! Pull this out of the fridge and warm it up a little before serving. Best drinking 2016-2019 Andrew Graham [May 2017, commissioned by TMBT]

2016 10X Pinot Gris

Vineyards :: ClonesOsborn (39%), Wallis (31%), Winebar (30%) :: D1V7 (100%)

Our thoughts...This is a Pinot Gris of contrasts, walking the line between ripe, steamed pear fruit generosity and a more sprightly citrusy expression. It works too, the acidity surprisingly taut, giving backbone and form to the palate and taking this from a more opulent expression into something you’d even call crunchy. Balancing the flavour and structure of riper style Pinot Gris can be a tricky prospect, but this wine delivers. Best drinking 2017-2022 Andrew Graham [May 2017, commissioned by TMBT]

Our thoughts...A rather breezy and juicy style for the 10X Pinot this year, if with an autumnal edge. There’s red raspberry fruit and cherry liqueur, underpinned by hints of mint and undergrowth. Compared to some vintages this is a less forceful style, the sour plum fruit rather more direct and affable, the tannins light and the leaning toward immediate drinking. This feels like a springtime wine; something to enjoy when the sun comes out again. Best drinking 2017-2025 Andrew Graham [May 2017, commissioned by TMBT]
