TROY, Alabama – Jayla Chills scored a career-high 21 points as the Troy women’s basketball team defeated Belmont, 91-74, on Wednesday at Trojan Arena. Chills scored seven of the team’s first nine points and finished 9-for-20 from the field. She also turned in seven rebounds and five assists as the Trojans knocked off the Ohio Valley Confer-ence preseason favorites. Troy (1-1) led by as many as 29 in the fourth quarter but a late Bruin (1-2) run closed the gap. Senior Lauren Day (12 points) and junior Dajia Williams (11 points) also recorded career-highs. Williams was one rebound shy of her first double-double, her rebound total was also a career-high. After taking an 8-point lead into the locker room, the Trojans exploded for 35 points in the third quarter behind 13-of-22 (59.1%) shooting including 3-pointers from Caitlyn Ramirez, Claresa Banks, Arjae’ Saunders and Kayla Robinson. For the second consecutive game, Troy collected 49 rebounds as a team, becoming the first team to beat the Bruins – a team that entered the contest with a +16.5 rebounding margin – on the boards this season. STAT OF THE GAMETroy reached the 80-point mark with 3:08 remaining in the contest, it was the 57th time the Trojans have scored 80-plus points in a game under head coach Chanda Rigby. NOTEWORTHY• Troy’s 35-point third quarter were the second-most scored by the team in a single frame since the NCAA moved to four quarters in women’s basketball last season. TROJAN NOTES

JUST CHILLS-IN’ ■ Senior guard Jayla Chills landed a career-

high 21 points in Troy’s 91-74 win over Belmont on Nov. 16. Her previous high was 15 points.

■ Through two games, Chills leads the Trojans in scoring and assists. She is second on the team in steals.

RAMIREZ LEADING THE WAY ■ Senior forward Caitlyn Ramirez set the

Troy Division I single-game record with 20 rebounds in the Trojans season opener at Auburn.

■ Ramirez also posted 13 points in the contest to lead Troy; it was her fourth career double-double.

■ Ramirez was a Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection after being named Third Team All-Sun Belt at the end of last season.

TROY PICKED TO WIN SBC ■ The Troy women’s basketball team

wasselected to win the Sun Belt Conference in the league’s preseason poll. It was the first time the program has been picked at the top of the standings since joining the league in 2005.

■ The Trojans received three first place votes and 125 points overall, finishing just ahead of Little Rock, the team Troy defeated in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game last year.

ALL-CONFERENCE TROJANS ■ Two Trojans were named to the Preseason

All-Sun Belt team. Caityln Ramirez was named to the first team while Arjae’ Saunders was named to the third team.

■ Last year, Ramirez and Ashley Beverly Kelley were named All-Sun Belt. It was the first time Troy had two all-conference selections in three straight seasons since 1995-98.

TAKING SUN BELT BY SURPRISE ■ Troy advanced to the NCAA Tournament

after winning the Sun Belt Conference tournament for the first time in school history.

■ Troy joined the Sun Belt in 2005, and in its 10 years in the conference prior to this season, the Trojans had never even advanced past the tournament’s quarterfinal.

■ The Trojans’ win over top-seeded Arkansas State was Troy’s first even Sun Belt semifinal appearance.

■ The Trojans’ win over 2-seed Little Rock was Troy’s first title game appearance.

TITLE GAME HEROICS ■ ArJae’ Saunders, Ashley Beverly Kelley and

Caitlyn Ramirez led Troy to a dramatic Sun Belt title game win over Little Rock, 61-60.

■ Troy was down by one and playing defense, 60-59, with 30 seconds left when Saunders grabbed a steal to give Troy possession.

■ Beverly Kelley took no time to bury a free throw line pull-up jumper with 20 seconds left, give Troy a 61-60 lead.

■ Little Rock did not use either of its two remaining timeouts, and Ramirez got a buzzer-beating block to reject Little Rock’s driving attempt at a game-winning layup.

■ The win was Troy’s first this season in a game decided by six points or less. Prior to the Sun Belt time game, Troy was 0-5 in games decided by two possessions or less.

FORCING MISTAKES ■ Troy forced opponents into an average of

21.7 turnovers per game last season, ranking fifth in the NCAA.

■ Troy forced all but three opponents last season into at least 15 turnovers, including forcing 18 of them into 20 or more and six into 30 or more.

■ Troy’s 10.4 steals per game led the Sun Belt and ranked 18th in the NCAA. Troy’s +3.1 turnover margin ranked third in the Sun Belt.

■ Troy’s best outing came at Southeastern Louisiana, forcing the Lions into 40 turnovers, the most forced by the Trojans since at least 1999-2000 when opponent turnover statistics are first available.

TROJAN TURNAROUND ■ Just five seasons ago (2011-12), the Troy

women’s basketball program went 2-26. Following that season, Chanda Rigby took over, and now the Trojans are coming off in an NCAA tournament berth and have enjoyed one of the best two-year periods in program history.

■ Last season, the Trojans won 20 games for just the fifth time in program history.

■ Troy’s 40 wins in the last two seasons are tied for the most in a two-year period in program history (21 in 1978-79, 19 in 1979-80).

RIGBY’S SYSTEM

HIGH-POWERED OFFENSE ■ Troy again had one of the nation’s top

scoring offenses in 2015-16, averaging 80.2 points per game. It was the seventh ranked scoring offense in the NCAA.

■ Troy’s high-scoring numbers are a product of head coach Chanda Rigby’s signature up-tempo system. Now in her fifth season, Rigby isn’t slowing down. The Trojans’ goal on every possession is to get a shot off within seven seconds.

■ Under Rigby, the Trojans have scored 100 points in 12 games, including in six in 2015-16. Prior to her arrival, Troy had scored 100 points just three times in 19 Division I seasons. They had last scored 100 in a game in 1996-97, a span of 441 games between 100-point efforts.

■ Troy’s six 100-point games this season breaks the school record of five held by the 1992-93 team, when the program was Division II.

■ Troy’s 103 points in last year’s season opener against West Alabama this season were the most ever for the Trojans in a season opener. It also gave Troy a 100-point game in four straight seasons for the first time in program history.

■ Rigby’s Troy teams have scored 80-plus points 57 times in her four seasons, something Troy did just seven times in the previous four seasons.

■ Troy has led the Sun Belt in scoring in each of Chanda Rigby’s first four seasons, including in 2013-14 when it averaged 80.4 points per game to become just the second Sun Belt team since 2000 to average over 80.0 points per game (Middle Tennessee, 2009-10, 80.8).

■ Rigby has had success with the system at numerous levels, including the JUCO level where she was before coming to Troy. Rigby’s last two teams at Pensacola State averaged 79.3 and 90.1 points per game on their way to two straight NJCAA Final Four appearances.

PRESSURE DEFENSE ■ Chanda Rigby has also brought

a pressure defense with her to Troy. In 2015-16, the Trojans forced 21.7 opponent turnovers per game, the best mark in the Sun Belt and the fifth highest mark in the NCAA. Troy’s 10.4 steals per game also lead the Sun Belt.

■ Troy forced all but three opponents into at least 15 turnovers last season, including 18 of them into 20 turnovers and six of them into 30.

■ Troy forced a season-high 40 turnovers at Southeastern La. The 40 turnovers by the Lions were the most forced by a Troy team since at least 1999-2000 when opponent turnover stats were first available.

■ In Chanda Rigby’s four seasons, Troy has forced 64 opponents into 20-plus turnovers and 14 into 30-plus turnovers.

Chanda Rigby begins her fifth season as the head coach at Troy in 2016-17. In her first four seasons, Rigby has quickly turned around the Troy program. The program won just two games in 2011-12, the season prior to Rigby’s arrival, but has won 20 games in each of the last two seasons.

Last season, the Trojans finished 20-13, won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history. Guard Ashley Beverly Kelley was named first team All-Sun Belt Conference and SBC Tournament MVP. Caitlyn Ramirez took home third team All-Sun Belt honors as well. Rigby’s squad led the conference in scoring for the fourth consecutive season and eclipsed to 100-point plateau six times. The team tied the school record with eight straight wins culminating with a victory in the Sun Belt Tournament championship game.

Troy’s 2014-15 team won 20 games for just the fourth time in program history and made the second postseason appearance in program history. The Trojans posted a 15-5 Sun Belt record, good for a program-best third place finish, then played in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, making a postseason appearance for the first time since 1997. The team also tied the Troy Division I era record with six straight wins in January before breaking the record with eight straight wins to close the regular season.

In addition to a winning culture, Rigby has also brought an exciting, fast-paced tempo to Troy. All four of her teams have led the Sun Belt in scoring offense, and the most recent three teams have both finished in the NCAA’s top 20 in scoring offense. Rigby’s teams have scored 100 points in a game 12 times and have scored 80-plus points 56 times in four seasons.

Rigby has also brought a pressure defense to Troy as the Trojans have forced 64 opponents into 20-plus turnovers in the last four seasons. In 2014-15, the Trojans averaged 12.1 steals per game, ranking first in the Sun Belt and fourth in the NCAA.

In her four seasons, Rigby has coached six first or second team All-Sun Belt selections, more than the program had in its previous seven combined seasons in the Sun Belt Conference. In 2015-16, Ashley Beverly Kelley and Ronita Garrett were both named to the All-Sun Belt First Team, giving Troy two first team selections for the first time in over a decade.
