Another successful season has just ended, and
thanks to more than 95,000 patrons who walked
through our doors in the past 12 months, we
continued to serve you and the Hoyt Sherman
Place Foundation mission. Our volunteers,
staff and Board of Directors worked tirelessly to
“create outstanding experiences for the cultural,
historic and educational benefit of Central Iowa,
its residents and its communities.”
Thank you for supporting us by attending our
events and choosing to make Hoyt Sherman Place
your home too. We want you to come back again
and again to experience the magnificent artwork,
to explore the history within the mansion walls,
to stroll across the graceful lawn and to enjoy an
amazing show.
Special thanks to our members and donors for
helping us maintain this beautiful place. As you
will read in this report, many great things have
been accomplished in the past year. We have
many more exciting new shows, special events
and building projects to announce, and we look
forward to seeing you in our place in the coming
year. Don’t miss out on any of the excitement!
Sincerely,
Robert Warren Executive Director
DEAR FRIENDS,
It has been my privilege to sit on the
Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation Board of
Directors for the past seven years and to
be asked to serve as the Foundation Board
President. My lifelong passion for the arts
has led to my full participation with our
organization. As a dedicated board member,
I actively attend and enjoy performances at
Hoyt Sherman Place and have personally
witnessed the success of the Foundation’s
goal of positively influencing the community
by providing the highest standard of art and
culture to the greater regional area.
What an honor it has been to watch the
transformation of Hoyt Sherman Place,
to see it become a strong and viable
community partner through dynamic,
diverse programming and strategic
managerial leadership. The quantity and
quality of the shows in the past few years
has increased significantly. In addition,
a great deal of attention is being placed
on the operational aspects of this historic
venue. The infrastructure is crucial to the
sustainability of the structure and its vast
collection of art and artifacts. Additionally,
the Foundation continues to focus on the
preservation of the mansion through their
participation in the Conservation Assessment
Preservation program. Supported by the
American Institute of Conservation, this
program allows preservation professionals
to have complete access to the building
and the collection in an effort to establish
long-term preservation goals.
Our organization influences the Des Moines
community by fostering and lifting up
other nonprofits and by being a viable arts
and cultural gathering place. Whether it
be attending a small jazz performance,
dance recital or a major music act, Hoyt
Sherman Place offers something for
everyone with enthusiasm.
It is such an exciting time at Hoyt Sherman
Place and I personally plan to continue my
deep involvement for years to come.
Sincerely,
Teri Wood TeBockhorst
Board President

In fiscal year ‘17, Hoyt Sherman Place put
the finishing touches on a four-year long
Art Restoration Project. In 2012, under the
guidance and enthusiasm of then Executive
Director Carol Pollock, the Hoyt Sherman
Place Foundation established an “Adopt-a-
Painting” conservation program to restore
54 paintings acquired by the Des Moines
Women’s Club over the past 125 years.
This program has continued under the
current Executive Director, Robert Warren.
All paintings from the collection have been
successfully conserved by Chicago painting
conservator Barry Bauman, including
works by Thomas Moran, George Inness,
and Edwin Lord Weeks. This undertaking
culminated in the conservation of
Des Moines’ finest large-scale Old Master
painting, “The Repentant Magdalene”
(Flemish, ca. 1680, unsigned), which was
conserved with funds received from the
Shirley and Kenneth Smith Estate.
In celebration of the completion of this
Art Restoration Project, Hoyt Sherman
Place created new museum quality signage
for each piece in the art galleries to present
the works of art to the public within an
historical context.
Now that this project has been successfully
executed, Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation
will embark on a campaign to restore the
ornate, historic frames in which these
paintings reside. Most of them are original
and date back to the early 1800s.

The Community Outreach Program allows
the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation to be
recognized as a performing arts education
and marketing partner for local nonprofit
and community groups by assisting in
the planning and presentation of annual
and unique new events. These events
not only provide a valuable learning
experience for many youthful performers,
but they also help expand audiences for
local organizations, provide performing
arts educational opportunities for the
community and expand the number of
visitors to Hoyt Sherman Place. Community
and corporate support of this program allows
us to provide a favorable rental structure for
local nonprofit arts organizations to access
this important community resource at a
greatly reduced cost.

Dedicated volunteers are the key to the
success of any organization. Hoyt Sherman
Place is fortunate to have a committed
group of over 150 volunteers always ready
to help whenever and wherever needed.
Giving of their time and talent, our
volunteers serve as ushers, ticket scanners,
tour guides and front desk receptionists.
Twice annually, we provide trainings for
our volunteers so they are always up
to date on how best to serve our patrons.
VOLUNTEERS“ Each August Hoyt Sherman
Place opens its doors to our
Des Moines Public Schools’
summer graduates. Settled in
the heart of Des Moines, the
venue is a testimony to our
city’s history, linking the culture
and personality of both past
and present generations. Not
only is Hoyt Sherman Place a
gorgeous venue, but the friendly
staff ensures our event success,
and most importantly, they
help us make each graduation
ceremony a beautiful and
inspiring night our students,
and their families, will never
forget. We are committed to
working with Hoyt Sherman
Place for this event for years
to come.”

FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS
In order to ensure that Hoyt Sherman
Place remains a vibrant and accessible
landmark for future generations, the
Foundation was able to acquire funds
from Prairie Meadows, MidAmerican
Energy and Bravo to complete a much
needed $503,000 overhaul of the heating,
ventilation and cooling systems in the
mansion and art galleries. By working
with Stroh Corporation and MidAmerican
Energy, the renovations and upgrades to
the mechanical systems have made Hoyt
Sherman Place more energy efficient and
reduced energy expenses by 10%.
The Hoyt Sherman Place parking lot has
also undergone a minor but necessary face
lift. When the marquee sign was moved
from the center of the lot to the southeast
corner in 2013, the raised concrete
platform it originally stood on was left
intact, taking up valuable parking space.
Using funds from the Building Restoration
Fund, the platform was successfully
removed, literally paving the way for three
extra parking spots, as well as an antique
light to illuminate the dark lot on event
nights. To further improve the patron’s
parking experience, valet service
has been added to the majority of
Hoyt Sherman Place’s theater events.
Additionally, in order to help alleviate
the issue of long bathroom lines during
theater events, the men’s restroom
on the second level of the theater was
reconfigured to double its capacity. This
investment from the Building Restoration
Fund has significantly reduced the length
of lines during intermissions and made
for a much more enjoyable experience
for patrons.
Other interior improvements worth
mentioning are the replacement of the
wheelchair lift, thanks to a generous
donation from Russ and Lucile Johnson,
as well as new directional signage to assist
patrons in wayfinding during events,
designed by The Design Group and
installed by Beeline and Blue.
