2016 - 2017 SCHOOL YEAR JUNE 2017
Principal’s Message Dear P.S. 21 Families,
As I look back on this year, I can say that it has been filled with many wonderful celebrations of learning.
As I passed through the halls, I saw students being respectful, being responsible and being kind. I saw smiles and laughter and a wonderful connection between teachers and students. I saw confident youngsters ready to take on the next grade.
I would like to congratulate our graduating class of 2017. I wish every student success as they move on to middle school! I know they will take with them all of the lessons learned here at P.S.21 and make us and themselves proud.
All of our students have worked hard all year long and I wish everyone a relaxing, memorable and well-deserved summer. Please remember that over the summer, it is important to keep your children's minds engaged and active. We ask that all of our students participate in our summer challenges handed out.

We have a reading challenge. We ask that your child read independently or be read to for a minimum of twenty times per month. Students are provided word lists which we suggest our students to memorize over the summer in order to build upon their sight word vocabulary.
Incoming students of grades 3-5 are provided with summer challenge notebooks and are encouraged to write a minimum of twenty-five entries over the summer, which can later in the year serve as seed ideas for writing stories.
A calendar is given to students with ideas and activities to support mathematical thinking over the summer. It is suggested that the students complete at least twenty-five activities over the course of the summer.
All students who participate in the summer challenges will be recognized in the fall on our summer challenge super star Bulletin board, be awarded with certificate(s) of achievement and be invited to a yummy ice cream party celebration.
Spend quality time together and create special memories that they can come back and share in September. Please check out our website for any updates.
I wish you all a happy, safe and enjoyable summer break!
See you back in September!!!
Warm regards, Michael Swirsky Principal

Message From The Assistant Principals Dear P.S. 21 Families,
It has been a terrific rewarding year for all of us! Thank you to all of the staff, students, families, and the community at large for contributing in making P.S. 21 a positive and safe learning environment. Our school is a special place because of all the amazing people who work to put the needs of the children first.
Over the summer break, take time to reflect and celebrate all of the great accomplishments of the school year and make plans to prepare for 2017-2018. July and August are a great time to engage in summer learning activities that will help maintain the learning progress that students have made all year long. The summer break is a wonderful time for students to work on their skills while still having plenty of time for summer fun.
Here is a list of some fantastic fun things to try over the summer months:
1. Make Time for Reading
If your child spends 20-40 minutes per day reading, she or he will start school in September ready to take charge of reading! Take your children to the public library to find books of interest and to participate in literacy events there. If your child is reading below grade level, you should read with them in order to help them with sounding out words they might not be able to say by themselves. Remember to participate in the P.S. 21 Summer Challenge!
2. Develop Math Skills
Working on just three to four math problems per day during the summer can help students maintain their math skills. They can look at it as a daily challenge to complete or as a daily “to-do” to proudly check off their calendar. When going to the grocery store, challenge your child to figure out the amount of change you will get in return. You can also recruit your student to help out in every day real life activities that require measuring and counting.
3. Improve Comprehension
To help our children with comprehension skills, it is important to practice making sense of any content they are viewing. Shows, movies, commercials, art, and poems are all genres kids can use and make sense of. It is important to discuss with your child what you saw to help them continue the practice of critical analysis—ask your child to explain his or her opinion with evidence.
4. Encourage Creative Writing
Your child can write about al the summer fun she or he is having. Whether your child is at camp or playing with friends, it is a great habit to have your child speak and then write about the events of the day. Students

can also benefit from using a thesaurus and changing several common words to more interesting words. This will make their writing more interesting while learning great new words at the same time.
5. Social Studies: Travel Map
Using a map or globe, pick out places that you have traveled to or would like to visit. Mark them and create an annotated list that describes the highlights of each place. Involve your child in planning a family trip. Ask her to plot the family's itinerary on a map, and find out what type(s) of food, music and art the family will encounter along the way. Summer Activity: Identify a popular summer place. Plan a visit to a baseball stadium, a beach, a park, an amusement park, the boardwalk or another favorite location. Use online mapping tools to plan your route and itinerary.
6. Try New Activities in NYC – One of the World’s Best Learning Playgrounds:
• Have fun with S.T.E.M at New York Hall of Science
On Friday afternoons (2:00-5:00 PM) and Sunday mornings (10:00-11:00 AM), this amazing museum is free. They have many interactive exhibits that link science, math, engineering, and technology. Watch a film in the 3D theater or explore exhibits about robots, light, and outer space.
• Movie Night and Discussion
Watch a historical film together and discuss, then learn more about the event at your local library. Summer Activity: City parks sponsors free outdoor movies all summer at various locations around the city. http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/free_summer_movies
Have a safe, healthy, and happy summer, Families! We are looking forward to welcoming you and your family back in September, ready to have a fantastic 2017-2018 school year!
Yours truly,
Mrs. Nigro & Mrs. Quirindongo Assistant Principal Assistant Principal

Science at P.S. 21
It’s hard to believe that it’s June and the year has come to an end. This school year has truly been a great experience for me. This year began my first year of teaching science to kindergarten and first graders. The students have enjoyed a year of observing and living like scientists! Over the course of the year the students participated in hands on learning, predicting, writing and recording observations. During our last unit of study we learned about the weather and seasons. The students enjoyed making rain clouds, researching and making cloud books and observing the clouds outside. I wish all of the students a wonderful summer full of adventure, wonder and learning!

STEAM @ P.S. 21
This was our first year implementing STEAM at P.S. 21. Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders took part in exploring Science and Technology, through Engineering and the Arts, all based in Math. They MADE things! It was so much fun, and they learned so much. In the last few months the students have been working on CAD (Computer Aided Design), working with a software application called Tinkercad to create 3D models, which we can then print on a 3D printer, MakerBot. The students engineered so many wonderful and amazing objects. The tools they are learning in STEAM will provide them with real world skills to do incredible things after high school. They WILL be ready!
