the following order:

Will I need a planner for this class? Yes. You will always need your planner in my class as a hallway pass for errands. You may only use your own

planner. If you do not have your planner, I will not allow you to leave the theatre area for non-emergencies.

For this class, you will need comfortable clothes, which are able to get dirty! If you need to wear really nice

THEATRE I The purpose of the Theatre I Class is to serve as general theatre class for students at Musselman High School.

Students will work on developing individual performance and technical abilities as they figure out if they are primarily an

actor, a tech or both. It is designed to educate students (usually freshman) who will be moving on to take upper level

drama courses, perform on stage and serve as technicians, but can also be used simply as an arts credit for graduation.

Students will perform in at least one show during the school year.

THEATRE II Emphasis will be on more advanced acting techniques, technical theatre, and play production. After school

participation in theatre activities is expected. If a student is unable to participate after school, then the student can make

up the grade with an alternate assignment or project. Students will perform in the competition shows during the school

year.

THEATRE III & IV Students will learn how to direct a play and assume key leadership roles within the theatre program as they

identify their personal strengths and discover their individual artistic paths. The structure of the class is project-based and

self-guided with many after school hours required and a high degree of responsibility and community service.

THEATRE C&P

The purpose of this class is to clean and maintain the theatre wing, while building sets, props and costumes for

productions. It is designed to give students experience in the theatre and the arts without acting. Students who take this

class will be expected to work tech for events during & after school, clean, take out garbage, build sets, and maintain

theatrical systems, props and/or costumes.

WIFI & INTERNET ACCESS

Berkeley County Schools now offers free WIFI for student use. Students should also have internet accessibility at home

to keep up to date on what goes on in the classroom.

DESKTOP COMPUTERS

In Classroom – There are two desktop computers in the theatre classroom. The PC, which has internet access, is reserved

for those working on a specific project during class. The Mac, which does NOT have internet access, is reserved for

specific projects for specific students assigned by Mr. Stiles. Please do not play games or watch videos on either

classroom computer. Students must use their own Musselman username and password and permission from Mr. Stiles to

use the computers. Please leave chairs at computer workstations. Do not move them around the room.

In Library – The library has several computers available. If there is a need for more than one person to work on a

computer I will send them to the library if the computers are available. Students will need their own planner to go to the

library.

In Computer Lab – If the entire class needs to get online during class at one time, I will schedule computer lab time and

take the entire class there.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Laptops – Students may have laptops in my classroom, however, they must be responsible for their own equipment.

Musselman High School is not responsible for any equipment that is lost, stolen or broken. Students may not leave

laptops in the theatre or in the drama classroom.

Pads – Students may have iPads in my classroom, however, they must be responsible for their own equipment.

Musselman High School is not responsible for any equipment that is lost, stolen or broken. Students may not leave their

pads in the theatre or in the drama classroom, especially if it needs to recharge. If a pad has to be plugged in to use, then

don’t use it.

Mobile Phones -- For the most part, the rule “OFF AND AWAY” is in effect in the drama classroom. However, there

may be times when you will be allowed to use your cell phone as an educational tool or a planner for the class.

Headphones are sometimes allowed during downtime with Mr. Stiles’ permission. Students are not allowed to recharge

their mobile devices in the theatre area during class time!

GRADING Every time you finish an assignment, take a test, perform or participate in the class, you will receive points that represent

the amount and quality of work you’ve done. Taking the points that you’ve earned and dividing them by the total points

possible calculate your grade. This percentage is then translated into a letter grade. Your grade will be calculated from

the following categories:

Test & Quiz – These are traditional tests using multiple choice, essay, fill in the blank, etc. to assess whether you

have retained information taught during class. Quizzes are worth 10-50 points and are usually True/False or Multiple

Choice. Tests are worth 50-100 points and can contain Essay questions.

Performances – Every time you perform in front of an audience (public or classroom), you will receive a

performance grade. Class performances (informal performance) are usually graded on the OSU SCALE† and worth

10 points. Public performances (formal performances) are worth a total of 100 points and are scored using the

PERFORMANCE RUBRIC (see below). Acting and Tech performances will be judged using different performance

rubrics. Public reaction to your performance is NOT considered for grading purposes. However, expert theatrical

opinion can be considered in some instances (for example: judges’ adjudication of a one act play performance). An

alternative essay may be assigned in place of a formal performance in case the student is unable to meet the formal

performance requirements. This is only done in emergency situations where the student is physically unable to be at

the performance or dress rehearsals. If a student simply does not show up at a dress rehearsal or does not learn

his/her lines or cannot perform a class show due to inadequate preparation or lack of parent support, the

student will receive a failing grade for the formal performance. Prior planning is required for alternate

assessment.

Homework – On occasion, homework will be assigned. These assignments are for a certain amount of points and are

usually graded on the OSU SCALE†. One form of Homework is going to see shows and writing a critique about it.

Classwork – On occasion, classwork will be assigned for completion during the class period. These assignments are

usually written assignments out of the class text. They are for a small amount of points, usually from 5 to 50 points,

and are due by the end of the class period whether finished or not. They are scored on the MUSSELMAN GRADING

SCALE*.

Participation – This is the most important grade of a theatre class. Due to the fact that there are not many written

assignments in a theatre class, a participation grade of 10, 25 or 50 points will be given each week or grading period

to each student if there are no written assignments. This is a discretionary grade assigned by the teacher based upon

the actions of the student in class as well as during after-school rehearsals. For more information on how this grade is

assigned, please see the PARTICIPATION DESCRIPTION & RUBRIC below.

After School Activities – When a class produces a show, they will work on it mostly during school. However, there

will be after-school rehearsals and performances for the show to be successful. These after school dates are given to

the students early in the process and students and parents are expected to plan for them. A grade will be given for

each after school rehearsal and performance. If a student is unable to make a rehearsal or performance, then an

alternate assignment will be given to the student to make up the grade. However, if a student simply does not show

up at a dress rehearsal or does not learn his/her lines or cannot perform the show due to inadequate

preparation or lack of parent support, the student will receive a failing grade for the formal performance.

Bonus – This is extra credit for efforts in theatre above and beyond the class and school. Examples include

participating in a community theatre show, seeing a community or professional theatrical production, etc. Point

values are small usually from 1 to 15 points depending upon educational value of the experience. Proof of

participation must be submitted to Mr. Stiles after the event for a student to receive bonus points.

Musselman Grading Scale OSU Scale

A – 93 to 100 Outstanding – 96%

B – 85 to 92 Satisfactory – 80%

C – 74 to 84 Unsatisfactory – 60%

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS

INTEGRITY

Integrity creates trust between people. Theatre students value a person’s ability to give honest feedback. Less experienced theatre

students trust the advice from an upperclassmen who has more integrity. Students rely on each other in an ensemble, trusting each

other to keep everyone safe physically, mentally and emotionally.

SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY

A strong sense of responsibility affects how a student works and the amount of work he/she does. When a student feels personally

responsible for their performance, they show up on time, puts in their best effort and completes projects to the best of their ability.

EMPHASIS ON QUALITY

Some students do only the bare minimum, just enough to keep their grade intact. Students with a strong work ethic care about the

quality of their work and work to solve problems quickly and creatively. They do their best to produce great work, not merely churn

out what is needed. The student’s commitment to quality improves the overall quality of the show.

DISCIPLINE

It takes a certain level of commitment to finish your tasks every day. A student with good discipline stays focused on their goals and is

determined to complete the assignment/job in a timely manner. These students show a high level of dedication to the show or class,

always ensuring they do their part and earning the respect of others.

SENSE OF TEAMWORK

Theatre students have to work together as a team to produce a show or project. A student with a high sense of teamwork helps a team

(either as a leader or follower) meet its goals and deliver quality work. These students respect their peers and help whenever they can,

making collaborations go smoother.

12

RULES FOR AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

1. Plan to be EARLY!

"To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late." Be at the appropriate place at least 15 minutes before

rehearsal begins. Get eating and socialization out of the way before rehearsal starts. Rehearsals begin promptly at the

scheduled time. Sometimes I will start rehearsals giving announcements and schedule changes. If you are late, please

check with the stage manager for what you missed. If it is a class production, what you do NOT know can affect your

participation and performance grades. If an after-school rehearsal starts at a later time and not right after school,

students are NOT allowed to stay at the theatre or in the school between the end of the school and the beginning of the

rehearsal. Arrangements must be made by students and parents to leave and come back. Students must sign-in on a

predetermined sign-in sheet for performances and dress rehearsals.

2. Plan to be FLEXIBLE!

In the effort to have the best show possible, sometimes we go past the scheduled ending times. Please do not

be surprised or take offense if we go over the ending time of a rehearsal. Also, please remember that ending times for

Dress Rehearsals are “openly” scheduled. Meaning: we get done, when the job is done. IF everyone works and pulls

together, dress rehearsals should end in approximately three hours, BUT be prepared to stay longer by not scheduling

anything after a dress rehearsal. The best way to handle this is by texting for a ride at the beginning of notes after the

run-through ends.

3. Plan to be THERE!

After three unreasonable absences you can be replaced in your role or tech job if I feel you are not contributing

to the success of the show. Parents: Do not schedule routine doctor, dentist, hair or other appointments during tech

week or performance times. Students: Talk to your employers, parents, teachers & coaches early and make sure you

have the rehearsal times open. Communicate with me, your parents and with your other teachers/coaches if the

production has conflicts with other school or home activities. We purposefully try to work around other activities,

especially the choir and band schedules, but this is not always possible.

4. Plan to be QUIET!

Please bring schoolwork to finish, a book to read, or practice your lines, music, or dancing when I am working

with others. You may not leave the rehearsal area (auditorium, backstage, classroom, dressing rooms, and/or

sceneshop) without permission, so be prepared and bring your work with you before we start. Remember the doors to

the rest of the school lock at 4:00 PM. In addition, "hanging out" in the wings during rehearsal is forbidden because it

distracts the other actors onstage.

5. Plan to be OFF BOOK!

Learn your lines, lyrics, music and dancing as soon as possible and before the deadlines! Work on these at

home and whenever you can! The sooner you are off-book the better your performance and the easier your life will be.

6. Plan to WORK!

Rehearsals are closed to others because of distractions to actors and staff. Help us to really surprise your

friends and family members at the performance by NOT bringing them to rehearsals. Unless they are volunteering with

the production or need to speak with me, parents or friends must wait on cast or crewmembers outside the rehearsal

area. Please have those giving you rides meet you behind the school outside the sceneshop. Please wait for rides in the

sceneshop or classroom and not by the flagpoles. If you are not in the sceneshop or the classroom waiting for a ride, I

will assume that you have been picked up.

7. Plan to be NEAT!

No food or drink is allowed in the auditorium or backstage! Bottled water is allowed. Please do not leave

personal items backstage, in the drama classroom, or in the dressing rooms. These are used during the day, so take

everything with you! The Theatre Department is not responsible for any lost or stolen personal items during rehearsal

or performances. Please be neat and clean up after yourself.

Every time a student makes a out-of-pocket payment or participates in an Individual Fundraiser, a deposit will be

made into their account.

Students can use money in their account for Musselman Theatre activities and/or merchandise. i.e. trips, DVD or T-

shirt orders, personal program ads, production fees, etc.

Monies in theatre accounts will be rolled over from year to year. Upon graduation or leaving Musselman High

School, unused funds will be absorbed back into the main theatre account, unless the student/parents request that the

funds be re-allocated at Mr. Stiles and/or the Booster Officers’ discretion.

If a student account has insufficient funds, the student will be restricted from participating in after-school theatre trips

or purchasing Musselman Theatre merchandise. i.e. – if a Johnny cannot make a payment or did not raise enough

funds, then Johnny cannot go on the trip no matter his part or role in the production.

PAYMENTS:

Please make all checks out to Musselman Theatre Department. Payments can be made in the theatre department’s

drop box in the Drama Classroom RM 411. Checks are the preferred method of payment.

If a payment is unable to be cashed due to insufficient funds or a stop payment, then the student will be restricted

from participating in after-school theatre trips until a cash payment can be made. If this situation happens more than

once then all future payments must be made by cash, money-order or certified check.

ALL late payments are on a CASH ONLY basis. If a payment is not received by the date of departure of a schedule

trip, then the student cannot go on that trip regardless of their role in the production or money already paid to the

Musselman Theatre.

All payments to the Musselman Theatre for student travel are non-refundable regardless of cancellation on the part of

the student or parent. However, if a trip is cancelled by the Musselman Theatre, then only monies paid out-of-pocket

are refundable to the parent by written request and proof of payment by the parent.

Payments must be made by 3:00 PM on the day due. If payment is not made by this time, then the payment will be

considered late and must be paid in cash. However, special arrangements for payments by the parents can be made

through Mr. Stiles PRIOR to the due date if necessary.

Out-of-pocket payments from a third party given to the Musselman Theatre to sponsor a student on a trip cannot be

refunded to the parents or to the student. The money can be given back to the third party if a signed and dated letter is

written to the school before the end of the school year. (i.e. Johnny’s Uncle sponsors him $50 for his trip to the State

Thespian Conference. Johnny then drops out of the show and does not go. The money can only be refunded to

Johnny’s Uncle if that Uncle writes a letter to the school saying he wants that money back.)

In the event of an overpayment for a trip due to fundraising, unused funds go into the student’s account to be used at a

later time. (i.e. Johnny owes $50 for his trip and pays $30 out of pocket for it. Then Johnny raises $50 selling ads.

The $30 paid out of pocket stays in Johnny’s account and cannot be refunded to the parents.)

FUNDRAISERS

The Musselman Theatre Boosters will sponsor fundraisers throughout the year for students to pay for their activity

fees and trips. Information on these fundraisers will be provided at booster meetings and on the website

www.musselmantheatre.com. It is expected for students and their parents to participate in these fundraisers in order

to participate in trips.

Patrons who receive goods or services as a result of fundraising activities cannot be refunded monies due to the lack

of participation on part of the student.

PROGRAM ADVERTISEMENT SALES: If a student sells an ad for the program, half of the money for selling an ad

will go into their account. The other half will go toward the production costs for the show. (i.e. if Johnny sells a $50

ad in the program, $25 goes into their theatre account).

SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT SALES: The use of donations from special advertisement sales (i.e. trailer ads, ads in

the theatre or on flyers or posters, personal program ads, etc.) will be specifically negotiated with the individual

company/organization/person making the donation.

INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISERS – Individual fundraisers (i.e. – Joe Corby Pizza, Chick-Fila, program ads, Cookie

Dough, etc.) raise monies for individual student accounts and are calculated on a percentage profit. i.e. if Johnny sells

$100 worth of merchandise with 40% profit, the student receives $40.

GROUP FUNDRAISERS – Group fundraisers (i.e. – shows, spirit nights, etc.) raise monies for the Musselman

Theatre program as a whole and do not contribute to student accounts.

MTD FIELD TRIPS Rules of Conduct for Students

1. No alcohol. If you are found to have alcohol, I will call your parents to come and get you. If they refuse, then you will

spend the remainder of the time with a chaperone in your presence. Upon returning to Musselman, formal disciplinary

action will be taken.

2. No smoking or vaping. If you are caught smoking or with tobacco products (including chewing tobacco and lighters)

they will be taken from you. When we return to Musselman, formal disciplinary action will be taken.

3. No illegal substances. If caught with drugs or drug paraphernalia, I will call the police and they will deal with you and

your parents. If you are suspected to have illegal substances with you, your room will be searched, contraband will be

seized and formal disciplinary action and/or criminal proceedings will be taken!

4. Do not leave the hotel or your group without Mr. Stiles’ prior knowledge and permission. NEVER go anywhere

alone!

5. Each night everybody will be in his or her own rooms. At a certain time each night, there will be a room check and

then lights out 30 minutes later. These times are subject to change if we get back late or early. Remember there are other

guests in the hotel and they want to sleep! Please be quiet and considerate after hours. Mr. Stiles will assign rooms.

6. After room check, no students are to be out of their rooms for ANY reason. Tape will be placed on the doors to

show if the door remains closed throughout the night. If the door was opened, the students will be questioned the next

morning and the ones who were out of their room will have to spend the rest of conference with a chaperone.

7. Always behave as young ladies and gentlemen. Remember, you are representing Musselman High School, Berkeley

County, and the Musselman Theatre Department through your actions, speech, and dress. "But other kids are doing it" is

not a valid reason and will never be accepted.

Chaperones

1. Before applying to become a chaperone, please read the Procedures for Volunteers and Chaperones here:

http://www.berkeleycountyschools.org/Page/8437

2. All Volunteers and Chaperones need to be approved by BCS. To do this you will need to register online

here: http://www.berkeleycountyschools.org/Page/8437 . Background checks and sexual harassment

training are required for any chaperone who drives students or stays overnight with students. This

background check costs $19.95.

3. Berkeley County School personnel are automatically approved by BCS.

4. All chaperones must have Mr. Stiles’ approval as well.

5. Chaperones, for the most part, have to follow the same rules as the students.

6. Chaperones on trips must be responsible for all students on the trip, not just their own child.

7. ALL students must travel and stay with the group. Special arrangements for drop off or pick up must be

approved by Mr. Stiles.
