MESSAGE Promoting a quality culture throughout the Organization. In October 2016 following our Accreditation Canada survey, the Centre was awarded with “Accreditation with Exemplary Standing”. This is the seventh time that the organization has received the highest accreditation ranking, a level only 28% of all organizations surveyed in 2015 achieved. Our high quality staff and outstanding services were once again validated by the national adjudication body of service excellence.

Improve Client Experience across all Programs. This past year has seen the convergence by Accreditation Canada, Health Quality Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care on the importance of patient engagement. Operationally, management and staff engage daily with residents/clients and families. The Board of Directors through the Quality Committee also engages directly with residents/clients and family councils through local onsite meetings. We will take the input and insights obtained to inform and support our strategy.

Make effective contributions to public policy development processes. As a credible opinion leader on a broad range of issues relevant to immigrants, aging and healthcare, the media are regularly interested in the organization’s view of public policy changes and the government’s response to emerging social issues.To ensure consistency of our values and beliefs on key positions on the subjects of Aging, Culture, Health and Equity, policy statements have been developed. These will be and posted on our website currently under redevelopment.

Broadening services to meet the emerging needs of aging seniors. Greatly appreciated, new government funding received has allowed us to expand services to seniors still in the community. We have substantially expanded our assisted living program in North York, grown our Behavior Support Ontario programs in Scarborough and Mississauga and introduced a technology enabled extension of our Memory Program in Scarborough whereby seniors with advanced dementia are provided with virtual access to geriatric assessment and care planning, while at home.

Yee Hong has long recognized the need for a safe haven for individuals and families struggling with end-of-life care. Government resources to address these needs are insufficient to cover the entire cost. However, the importance of this service guided our decision to develop a 10-bed residential hospice in Scarborough. We will be working closely with our Foundation and the community to support our new hospice.

In 2016, a new childcare centre opened at Yee Hong Ho Lai Oi Wan Centre in Markham. Intergenerational programs are being developed to support interaction between our senior residents and the young children. Research supports this type of activity results in improved quality of life for seniors. A second childcare centre at Yee Hong – Mississauga will be opened in the coming year.

In closing, we are very excited to launch our “Innovation Lab”. We will be sharing more shortly and reporting back to you on this new initiative in our next Annual Report.

MESSAGE As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation in 2017, we recognize that we are at a pivotal moment in history, both for Yee Hong and the country as a whole.

Canada is one of the best countries in the world, if not the best - our economy is strong, the political environment is stable, and our communities are inclusive and welcoming. Yee Hong is likewise one of the best in the world at culturally appropriate and sensitive senior care. But just like the country we call home, there is always room for improvement.

While Canada is a young country, Canadians in general are getting older. We are living longer lives and having less children. For the first time ever, there are more seniors aged 65 and older in Canada than children under 14. The group of Canadians aged 85 and older grew almost four times as fast as the overall population.

Keeping these older Canadians healthy is a huge task that we have only just begun to tackle. The situation is so urgent that the Senate has recommended a national seniors strategy to ensure appropriate, accessible and affordable care. We know that Yee Hong will play a part in making that strategy a reality.

But it is unfeasible and unreasonable to build enough long-term care homes to meet the demands of our growing senior population. And we know in any case that long-term care is not the ideal solution. It is crucial for seniors’ mental and physical well-being to stay active and engaged, to be healthy and happy.

That’s why Yee Hong continues to promote active lifestyles for seniors through our various online and community programs and services. Not just for seniors, but for their families, friends and caregivers as well. Yee Hong is not just a long-term care facility - we are involved across the full spectrum of senior health and wellbeing.

That spectrum extends from the healthy to the terminally ill, and Yee Hong is also working to make seniors’ lives better on the other end of the spectrum. We started with our palliative care initiatives in recent years, and we’ll take it to the next level in the near future with a campaign to build a residential hospice for Scarborough-area residents and Chinese seniors in the province. The same Yee Hong expertise in quality care will apply to those with special needs and requirements at the end of life.

The Yee Hong story is a microcosm of the Canada of today - indeed, it is unlikely that Yee Hong would have been as successful anywhere else in the world as it is here. But just like our country, we are not a finished product. We need to keep developing and innovating to meet the needs of our communities. Please help us achieve it.

Yee Hong has participated in the accreditation program through Accreditation Canada since 1996. In Yee Hong’s first survey, the organization was recognized for the provision of “exemplary care”. Since that time, Yee Hong has consistently used the accreditation standards to guide operations.

The latest on-site survey by Accreditation Canada took place just this past October. In November, Yee Hong received Accreditation with Exemplary Standing for 2016 – 2020 – the highest honour and recognition awarded by Accreditation Canada. This is the eighth consecutive time that Yee Hong has received full accreditation since it began operation.

In 2017, Yee Hong Centre authored a textbook chapter on our Continuum of Care; this pivotal reference source is for policy makers, academicians, researchers, and advanced-level students seeking current research on the innovative planning and development of healthcare. The book includes the following topics: corporate social responsibility, and data management, financing health and performance measurement, and references the latest scholarly research on a provider accreditation, Public-Private Partnerships and Quality Improvement.

Four Public Policy Statements

To extend our advocacy and outreach efforts to promote seniors issues, Yee Hong Centre has formalized and pulished four public policy position statements on health, equity, culture, and aging. These statements articulate our viewpoints on how our work helps to combat the challenges of Canada’s aging population.

Our perspectives may change over time, but our goal of achieving optimal health and wellness for all seniors regardless of culture or descent holds strong in our advocacy efforts and actions.

Yee Hong Centre’s Leadership Development and Continuity Program

Retaining and developing highly skilled, caring leaders to support the current and emerging demands of the organization is a key priority. Yee Hong’s program focuses on developing leadership capacity and a pool

of potential successors for key positions, aligned with Yee Hong strategic priorities. The resulting leadership assessments and development plans address upcoming positions and new opportunities

for emerging talent in the long-term care and community and social services sectors.
