Welcome back everyone! I sincerely hope that you have all enjoyed a restful and relaxing winter break with family and friends. In years past, I am typically writing to you about the cooler than normal temperatures and today I am writing about how unseasonably warm it has been this winter! Aside from the brisk welcome back we had on Monday, we have seen the warmer weather creeping back. Let’s hope that we soon get some proper winter snow, so that we can enjoy our upcoming skit trips and the January Special Invite!

I always like to think of January as a fresh start! Everyone comes back after the holidays with a renewed drive and determination to achieve great success! As always, January will be a busy month for Kenollie Public School, with a jam packed calendar of events and activities for both students and parents.

Students in Grades 5 & 6 are encouraged to watch for and attend the information evenings for Peel

Regional Programs (http://www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/regional/Pages/default.aspx) Students in SK (entering Grade One in the Fall of 2016), & Grade Six (entering Grade Seven in the Fall of

2016) who are interested in French Immersion and Extended French respectively, are reminded that they must register children by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29th, 2016. Finally, Kindergarten registration is fast approaching and we would ask that everyone help us to spread the

word! Information about this year’s registration can be found on page five of this newsletter. We would also like to encourage families with students starting Grade One at Kenollie in the Fall of 2016, to also book a registration date as soon as possible, as it makes planning for the Fall easier.

Over the course of this first month of the New Year, staff and students will also be winding down Term One. Our Kindergarten Summary of Progress (for our JK/SK students) and our Term One report cards (Grades One to Six) will be coming home on January 29th and February 11th, respectively. At this time of year, our FDK teachers will schedule interviews for all students in SK. All other grades (JK and 1—6) will be interviewed at teacher or parent request only. Please be sure to connect with your child’s teacher to arrange an interview time if you would like to do so.

During the coming months, our staff will be engaging in a number of school success initiatives that align with our plan for the 2015-2016 school year and years to come. Here are just some of the highlights:

In December, Ms Ellison, Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Freeman & Ms Zbogar attended a workshop on Restorative

Practices. This workshop closely aligns with our focus on school climate.

This month, select students from Grades 5 & 6, along with Ms. Zbogar & Ms Ellison will be participating in a

Red Cross Workshop on Anti-Bullying, called Beyond the Hurt. These student leaders will then share with other students in the school through the organization of activities and presentations

Ms. Hamilton, Mrs. Dennis-Moore & Mrs. Giannone are piloting a new Mathematics program with a focus

on the integration of technology

Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Giannone and Mrs. Holt are taking on leadership roles to support our school numeracy

goals and will be attending 3 days of training and collaboration with staff from other schools

Mrs. Dennis-Moore and Mrs. Newton-Faulkner are looking to attend a Leader in Me workshop along with

me, in the Spring of this school year. You may recall that our school is looking to bring the Leader in Me (7 Habits, Stephen Covey) to Kenollie in the coming years.

I certainly look forward to sharing more specific details about this work and our school success plan during the upcoming School Council meeting on January 25th at 7:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

As we begin this new year, I want to thank all of you for your ongoing support. We value the important role that you play in supporting your child(ren)’s learning outside of the instructional time, and appreciate the opportunity to work in partnership to help our students excel! I would also like to thank School Council for their support of our school success plan, in helping us to purchase many additional instructional enhancements and needed resources that align with our goals. Thanks for all that you do! You really do make a difference!

Please ensure your child has a pair of ‘indoor’ shoes to be

kept at school. This will help keep our school clean,

especially when winter brings the snow, slush & mud.

For safety reasons, all students are required to wear shoes

throughout the school day. In the event of a fire alarm or

emergency evacuation, students will not have time to put

on shoes or boots. Also, students without proper outdoor

footwear (i.e., boots), will be restricted to the blacktop

when playing outside as our field tends to get very wet

and muddy.

Traffic safety in our community Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips

to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and

from school.

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school proper-

ty. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding

streets used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff

members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the

Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed

to keep students safe.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or

draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take

shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the

curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the

curb to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the

car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the

school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, pas-

sengers and other drivers with respect.

Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to

school. This will give you time to talk to your children

about their day, review new vocabulary words, math con-

cepts, etc.

Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersec-

tion or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by cross-

ing in the middle of the street.

Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet,

and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the

street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle

of the road.

Thanks again to our wonderful Kiss and Ride organizer,

Mrs. Chiofalo-Chung and her awesome team of parent

and student volunteers! We all lead busy lives but it is

important to always slow down in a school zone and put

the safety of our children first. Here are just a few

friendly reminders about keeping Kiss and Ride safe:

Please try and have students ready for a brief stop

(e.g. backpacks in hand, etc.) so the team can keep the

line-up moving . The drivers behind you will

appreciate it.

Should you need to park please indicate so to the team

and they will let you in. If you have parked in the

parking lot you will need to wait until Kiss and Ride

has cleared before you will be permitted to leave.

Remember not to park on Brackencrest as many

students use this roadway to walk to and from school.

If you are parking on Kenollie, please only park on

the North side.

There is always a last minute rush at 8:55 a.m. The

school provides supervision on the yard and at Kiss

and Ride starting at 8:45 a.m. To avoid the rush

please come a few minutes earlier.

Once you have picked up your child, please turn right

only on Glenwood when exiting Kiss & Ride.

During pick-up, please enter the kiss and ride loop

directly, rather than waiting along Glenwood for your

child to exit. If you know that your child often arrives

later, please come at that time. We are working to

have bus students ready a few minutes earlier and are

trying our best to minimize wait times, while

reinforcing safety first!

Kenollie will be participating in a fundraising

effort to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation

S.O.A.R. (“Students Helping Orphans in Africa

with Relief”) Campaign to raise money for those

orphan children in Africa that have been affected by the

AIDS pandemic.

Over 28 million people, that is almost the population of

Canada, have been touched by this disease and during this

Valentine’s Day season we would like to ‘Send Our Love

to Africa” and show we CARE. Students may wish to buy

candy grams on sale February 2-4 for

fellow students which will be delivered on Friday, February

12.

Students may also wish to purchase popcorn and drinks at

our PJ/MOVIE day on Friday, February 12. The cost for

candy grams, popcorn and drinks is $1.00 each.

Thank you for helping our efforts to support this

worthy cause and to show that Kenollie cares!

Port Credit Hockey Association—Charity Game

We are very excited about an upcoming event for our stu-

dents. As is becoming an annual tradition, our school has

been invited to bring a “chorus of student voices” to sing

the Canadian National Anthem on the evening of Satur-

day, January 23 at the Port Credit Hockey Association

Coaches’ Charity Hockey Game at the Port Credit Arena.

All participating Kenollie Students will receive complimen-

tary tickets (general admission as there is no assigned seat-

ing) for the game. Students who stay for the game must be

accompanied by an adult for the duration of the game.

Adults may purchase tickets at the arena.

If your child is interested in participating please

ensure that your child attends a first recess

meeting in the Music Room on Tuesday, January 12 for further information.

Give what you can on United Way Giving Day – Feb. 9, 2016

At the Peel District School Board, our mission is to inspire

success, confidence and hope in each student – each and

every day. Yet we know that there are many needs in our

community that we can’t address on our own, like providing

food for families that may go without or supporting commu-

nities after a crisis. That’s why we are holding a board-

wide giving day in support of United Way of Peel Region, a

key partner and supporter of Peel families.

This year, the Peel board has declared February 9 as Unit-

ed Way Giving Day to raise much needed funds for United

Way of Peel Region and the network of social service agen-

cies it supports. Whether it’s providing shelter for a mother

and her children in Brampton, matching a child who is at

risk with a mentor in Caledon, or funding a breakfast pro-

gram in Mississauga for youth that would otherwise go hun-

gry, United Way of Peel Region offers hope and possibility

to thousands in our community.

A donation of:

$2 may go towards a warm winter coat for a child.

$10 supports a child with interactive, recreational out-

ings for one year, including healthy snacks and trans-

portation, to help them build their social skills and self-

esteem.

$25 matches a teen with a caring adult mentor who will

meet with him or her several times each month for fun

activities.

This is a completely voluntary campaign and any contribu-

tions are welcome. Whether you send a loonie, toonie or

cheque made out to your child’s school, your contribution

will make a difference. Pledges of $25 or more will auto-

matically receive a tax receipt from United Way of Peel

Region. To receive a receipt, you must fill out the pledge

form on the back and send it to school with your donation

by March 29, 2016.

Thank you for lending a helping hand to those who need it

most. Together, we can Inspire Possibility!

On January 22nd, 2016 your child(ren) can sleep in a little

bit longer than usual! Students, staff and parents are invit-

ed to come to school dressed in their PJs for the day! Bed

head is encouraged and slippers are a must! Looking for-

ward to seeing everyone participating! Don’t forget to

bring 50 cents for SOAR!

It is a priority at Kenollie to keep students

safe with proper supervision. Thank you for your

co-operation.

Please be aware that supervision begins daily at 8:45

a.m. There are no staff members on duty prior to

this time. We ask that students do not come to school

prior to 8:45 a.m. unless supervised by an adult.

Dismissal takes place at 3:30 p.m. Students are to

leave school grounds immediately or head to the

"Kiss and Ride" area. Students are not permitted to

stay after school unless they are directly supervised

by a parent or caregiver.

Enrolment cap and random selection process As there is a grade 1 FI enrolment cap in place, there are a limited number of spots available for students entering the program. The cap is set at 25 per cent of all Peel students enrolled in grade 1. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. A random selection process system is used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. All students who apply by the deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Each school has its own waitlist. Conference helps parents make a difference in numeracy and beyond The Peel District School Board is hosting its annual parent conference on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Rick Hansen Secondary School in Mississauga. Once again, the conference will focus on numeracy—25 out of 60 workshops help with math. Parents will still have the opportunity to attend workshops on other topics, including literacy, special education and science. This free learning event is open to Peel parents of students at all grade levels.
