A Message from OurBishopOctober 2016

My dear friends in Christ,

I am especially pleased to share with you our 2016 Annual Report of the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Education Foundation. This year marks our 20th Anniversary! Twenty years is a milestone in any situation and the Foundation is no exception.

Since 1996, the Catholic Education Foundation has awarded nearly $18 million in need-based scholarships to 14,000 students. It has distributed $400,000 in Education Grants to parishes and has provided $200,000 in continuing education grants for administrators, teachers and parish catechists. I sincerely thank the thousands of benefactors over the last two decades for making this possible.

Bishop Joseph Imesch had the foresight to establish a permanent entity focused on providing ongoing funding for the benefit of Catholic education in June 1996. Our Lord called Bishop Imesch home on December 22, 2015. I know that he financially supported the Foundation personally every year since its inception, and was proud of the Foundation’s escalating support of our Catholic school students, parishes and ministries. There is no greater honor that the Catholic Education Foundation can bestow on the memory of Bishop Imesch than to grow its assets continually and increase the amount of scholarships and grants that are allocated each year.

In addition to our ardent benefactors, I thank our devoted volunteer Board of Directors for their gifts of time, talent and treasure on behalf of our students and our schools. Each board member has accepted the challenge of St. John Paul II: “Catholic institutions should continue their tradition of commitment to the education of the poor in spite of the financial burdens involved.” I appreciate and rely upon the board members’ tireless efforts in helping me to ensure that Catholic education remains financially viable for all students throughout the Diocese of Joliet.

I pray that God will continue to shine His blessings upon you and your family.

May God bless you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel ConlonBishop of Joliet

A Message from OurBoard ChairOctober 2016

Dear Friends of the Catholic Education Foundation:

Thank you to all of our Catholic Education Foundation benefactors for the significant investment in our mission and in the academic and Faith lives of our young people. It is my honor to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors as we begin our 20th Anniversary year.

As I reflect on the history of the Foundation and the many volunteers who have paved the way, I am even more proud to work alongside our Board of Directors. They contribute their time and talent through committee work that helps market the foundation, cultivate lasting relationships and distribute millions of dollars of critical scholarship funding to students. Equally as important, these dedicated colleagues annually support the CEF scholarship program with 100 percent financial participation.

The board is honored to continue the vital ministry of Catholic education which was started by Bishop Joseph Imesch and whose vision we strive to perpetuate. Through the inspiration of Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, we are united in our commitment to advance the opportunities for our youth so that they can benefit from a Catholic education in the Diocese of Joliet.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I express my deep gratitude and appreciation to all who have supported the vital work of the Catholic Education Foundation.

Sincerely,

Patrick C. Lynch Chairman of the Board

A Message from ourSuperintendent and Chief Executive OfficerOctober 2016

Dear CEF Supporters and Friends,

As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) beginning in June 2016, we are spending less time reflecting on past accomplishments and more so in implementing exciting new programs involving Parish Outreach, creating new Cultural Scholarships and funding Special Needs Education throughout the diocese. Of course it is most appropriate to acknowledge the support of our benefactors who have been responsible for our success and achievements over two decades and especially this past year.

The record number of CEF donors this year enabled the distribution of a record amount of grants and scholarships totaling $2,068,157. This amount includes $1,988,493 in scholarships distributed to 1,549 students who demonstrated a verified financial need. The CEF is pleased to acknowledge our benefactors. We are blessed to have the leadership of the Kazma Family Foundation providing significant high school grants, the Kaminski Foundation focusing on single parent funding, and the McShane Foundation committed to Hispanic scholarships. Other generous funds of significant impact include the John and Paulette Kaiser Scholarship and the Knights of Columbus-Bishop’s Burse Endowment authorized by Bishop Conlon. Similarly this past year, Bishop Conlon arranged for two significant scholarship funds to be established through the estates of Fr. Frank Vitas and Fr. John Barrett.

While we pray for the repose of their souls and the souls of all of our Faithful-departed benefactors, the CEF is equally fervent in acknowledging the passing of the person responsible for creating the Catholic Education Foundation… Bishop Joseph Imesch. We will be forever grateful for Bishop Imesch’s passion for Catholic education as well as his foresight in providing the vehicle for perpetual support of financially qualified students attending our Catholic schools in the Diocese of Joliet.

Looking forward to the year ahead, the CEF is excited about continuing to advance our existing funds and create new opportunities. All the while we will strive to provide a Catholic education to all students who desire it while demonstrating financial transparency to our benefactors.

Thank you for your generous support through your prayers and financial support of the Catholic Education Foundation.

Sincerely,

Rev. John Belmonte, SJ, Ph.D. Joseph L. Langenderfer, CFRESuperintendent of Schools Chief Executive Officer

Donor SpotlightKazma Family FoundationThe Catholic Education Foundation has enjoyed a close partnership with the Kazma Family Foundation since 2002. Our sincere appreciation to Gerry and Margaret Kazma and Foundation President Leigh-Anne Kazma for your significant impact on the lives of 525 ‘Kazma Graduates’ and 125 current ‘Kazma Scholars.’ The wisdom and kindness of the Kazma Family to invest in Catholic education in the Chicagoland region and throughout the world has no equal. The lives of hundreds of Catholic high school students and graduates of the Diocese of Joliet are defined by the benevolence of the Kazma Family Foundation.

Donor SpotlightSt. Margaret Of Cortona Scholarship A family in the Diocese of Joliet who wishes to remain anonymous has a created a multi-year scholarship fund to assist students from a single parent household. The donor has chosen to begin this fund with one Kindergarten student who will continue to receive financial aid each school year through the 8th grade. The Catholic Education Foundation is pleased to match these charitable dollars and distribute the financial aid per the donor agreement.

As strong pro-life advocates with a passion for Catholic education, this family has suitably named their scholarship after St. Margaret of Cortona.St. Margaret was a 13th century single mother and penitent of the Third Order of St. Francis. After spending her early years unsuccessfully struggling with temptation, St. Margaret of Cortona preached against vice and devoted her adult life to the Eucharist, to Christ’s Passion, and to serving the poor.

Leaders for the FutureContinuing Education for Parish Catechists and School TeachersThe Leaders for the Future program supports college-level study in order to develop future parish ministry and Catholic school leaders in the Diocese of Joliet. The CEF values its partnership with the following colleges and universities in support of our Diocese of Joliet teachers and catechists: Benedictine, Lewis, St. Francis, Creighton, Catholic Theological Union, Felician, DuPage, St. Joseph, Notre Dame, and Our Lady of the Lakes. Similarly, the Cohort with USF and Lewis University for the Principal Preparation Program and Educational Leadership programs have been most successful in providing for future school administrators. An additional program for parish personnel is sponsored in part by the University of Dayton-Institute for Pastoral Initiatives. These programs are designed to recognize the importance of supporting future lay leaders engaged in graduate study and ministry certification respectively for ministry in the Diocese

The following schools and parishes have teachers and catechists enrolled in graduate programs which the CEF supports through no-interest loans covering approximately 30 percent of the tuition cost. After three years of continuous service with the diocese, the CEF forgives the loans:

Family Profile:A Family in NeedFamily ProfileFather enjoyed a professional position until a sudden debilitating heart attack caused brain damage. Even with the mother finding part time work, the family income depleted from $87,000 to $22,000 per year. After 13 months, the father is now receiving full disability but it is a fraction of his previous salary. The family is still trying to dig out of a financial and emotional nightmare. With prioritizing a Catholic education for their 3 school-age children, the family has cut back on all household expenses in order to Catholic schools a reality. Their Faith has been stellar.

Three Students of Five ChildrenNancy (5th grade), Joe (2nd grade), Danielle (1st grade)

Tuition Bill$12,600 per year. That’s $1,050 each month. The family is able to commit $4,000.

In Their Own Words“Early last year I had a severe heart attack which dropped my income by 75%. With the continued mounting medical debit, taxes, bills, and now medical insurance I have to buy and the normal costs of having 3 of our 5 children in a Catholic grade school, it has financially become a strain. My condition requires my wife to assist me and also not leave me alone with the children for long periods of time. As a result, she goes to work a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening but doesn’t make enough to significantly supplement the income. I am so grateful to my parish family and to the CEF benefactors who have helped us tremendously. Thank you and God Bless. Together we can do what we cannot do alone. “

Ministry Grants to Parishes The Parish Ministry Grant program is being funded in FY 16-17 by the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) which enables the CEF to distribute an additional 40 to 57 student scholarships totaling $40,000. The CEF is most grateful to all CMAA donors for their generosity. Parish Ministry awards are education grants that enrich the faith understanding and deepen the spirituality of Catholics in parishes across the diocese. These parish awards also help to proclaim Christ and the Catholic faith to all through evangelization initiatives. The following awards were granted in June 2016 for use in the coming fiscal year:

Benefits to Our Donors The Catholic Education Foundation welcomes cash contributions, bequests, and tax-wise planned gifts of all denominations. The Foundation, in return, offers numerous benefits to our donors:

Guarantee of Professional Management The Board of Directors guarantees sound professional management of all funds entrusted to our wise stewardship.

Frequent Reporting to Donors Monthly, quarterly and/or annual reporting is initiated as well as a year-end, independent audit to guarantee full disclosure of Foundation accounts and activities. Our most recent financial audit is available for viewing on the web (www.dioceseofjoliet.org/edfoundation) and is open to public review throughout the year in our offices during normal business hours. Pursuant to IRS regulations, the audit can also be mailed upon request.

Memorialize a Loved One Often donors wish to remember a loved one, family heritage or particular cause by naming a specific fund, which serves as an everlasting remembrance.

Gifts that Last Forever Various planned giving vehicles, sometime using different methods, enable a gift to work forever by using only the income while the principal remains uninhibited.

The Donor’s Favorite CharityFunds can be earmarked for a special beneficiary or be unrestricted to serve the general purposes of the Catholic Education Foundation. Similarly, many planned gift vehicles are open-ended, and the donor may add to the corpus at a later date.

Tax Advantage to Donor All contributions are accepted with the intention of providing optimal income tax deductions for the donor, and liquid assets are invested to produce maximum income for the charitable cause.

You Can Tailor Your Giftsto Fit Your Desires!
