2016 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

A Letter from the President

When the Food Bank began a capital campaign to raise money for the Hunger Solution Center, many people, corporations and community organizations offered their support. The goals for the building were simple; to feed more, to educate more, to engage more, and to support more. When the HSC opened in early 2015, no one could have anticipated the magnitude in which this vision would be fulfilled. In a single year, all the goals for our building were realized.

Double capacity to improve food distribution 53 million pounds of product distributed

Increase the distribution of nutritional foods and fresh produce 11 million pounds of fresh produce & 131 Mobile Nutrition Trucks delivered

Open a production kitchen to prepare fresh, high-quality meals for kid’s feeding programs 5,000 meals prepared daily, more than half a million meals served

Triple the amount of volunteer space available for sorting food More than 8,600 volunteers donated 55,000 hours of their time

Provide a place for the community to gather for meetings and special events. Hosted 200 community meetings, including Governor Snyder and President Obama

2016 was an amazing year for the Food Bank and we are proud of the work we did throughout our service area, especially our role in the Flint Water Crisis recovery efforts. Because of supporters like you, the Food Bank was uniquely positioned to act immediately and efficiently; quickly becoming a leader in the community’s relief response.

However, our greatest accomplishment in the last year was not that we met the needs of a community in crisis, but that we continued to achieve our mission of fighting hunger within all 22 counties in our service area. In 2016, we delivered 26.7 million pounds of food. That’s 2 million pounds more than in 2015, despite the additional water distribution in Flint.

Together, with your dedicated support, we will continue to build a community solution to a community problem. When we sow the seeds together, the harvest will feed many and “change the face of hunger.”

Sincerely,

William E. Kerr

President
